Dr. C. RuitenbergBio

Claudia Ruitenberg was born and raised in The Netherlands. She first came to Canada in 1987 to attend the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific on Vancouver Island, and returned in 2000 for doctoral studies at Simon Fraser University. She divides her time between Vancouver and Salt Spring Island.

She is a Scholar in the Centre for Health Education Scholarship, a Faculty Associate of the UBC Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice and a member of the Steering Committee of Critical Studies in Sexuality.

 

Individual Research Interests

agonistic (i.e., conflict-oriented) conceptions of politics and democracy; ethics (including, but not limited to, Derrida’s ethics of hospitality); speech act theory and discursive performativity; philosophical research methods; questions of epistemological diversity in education; aesthetics and art education; gender and queer theory in education

I am interested in supervising research students in the following areas:

  • Philosophical approaches to educational questions, including (but not limited to) questions in the areas of ethics, political philosophy, and epistemology
  • Politics, democracy and citizenship in education
  • Philosophy of medical education
  • Queer theory and education; anti-homophobia education
  • Aesthetic theory and education; museum education; art interpretation and hermeneutics
