EduVision

For the past few years my school division has been looking for a streaming video solution – to support our online learning program, to host & serve videos created within our division of school events and “best practices” videos, and to provide a way to control access to videos. (Blackboard, our LMS, is a poor way to house videos)  We’ve considered alternatives such as posting videos on YouTube or iTunes, but to best meet our needs we see real advantages in having our own video server solution.  Currently I’m down to two primary candidates – ShareStream and EduVision.  For my Founder Parade Posting, I’ll provide information about EduVision, a product of JDL Horizons and its President, CEO and founder, Thomas L. Lapping.

EduVision is one of several products and services provided by JDL Horizons.  In addition to EduVision, a video content management systems, JDL Horizons also offers products for webcasting, a video-over-IP solution, and curriculum packages for project-based learning.  JDL Horizons, founded in 2007 by current president and CEO Thomas J Lapping, arose through the merger of two operating divisions of JDL Technologies, also founded by Thomas Lapping, in 1989.  Before beginning his venture, Mr. Lapping held positions as Director of Marketing, Education, for Corvus systems and as National Education Sales Manager for Control Data’s Plato Education Services.  Thus he brings a long history of marketing, sales, and management experience to the company.  Other key personnel include Clayton Bosquez, VP Product Development, Director of Operations Matthew Schaaf, General Manage Stu Swartz, and Director of Software Development Gopal Sadagopal.  Messrs. Bosquez and Schaaf also bring many years of experience in the K-20 educational technology markets.

Does this particular venture whet my own entrepreneurial appetite? Not really.  I f I were ever to lead my own venture, my personal strengths and background would most likely lead me more into providing a service rather than a technical product.
