CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (MSFSS) – 3rd intake for 2021-2022

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions.

This program is available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the Master’s or doctoral level or a Vanier CGS. Note that international students who hold a Vanier CGS are not eligible for this competition.

Applicants submit their application materials directly to Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies via online submission (see application submission link below) by 4:00 pm PT on Friday, 21 January 2022.  Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

All application materials should be submitted as 1 PDF document via online submission (see link below). Applicants are strongly encouraged to collect letters from their supervisors and include all PDF documents in one online submission.

CIHR has launched a third intake for the 2021-2022 MSFSS competition with the intention of awarding the remaining supplements from the two previous intakes. CIHR has sufficient funds for approximately 25 awards (nationally). Eligible applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Complete and eligible applications will be forwarded to CIHR as they are received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.  Note that NSERC and SSHRC are not participating in this special “3rd call” MSFSS competition this year (only CIHR is participating), so NSERC and SSHRC award holders are not eligible to apply for this competition.

Value: Up to CAD $6,000 for two to six months

Applicant deadline: 4:00 pm PT on Friday, 21 January 2022.  Note that that this competition is “first come, first served” – applicants are encouraged to submit their applications in advance of the application deadline, if possible, as CIHR is accepting applications on a “first come, first served” basis.

2. Review the program details and the list of opportunities

Read all the information on this page and in the application guide to make sure you understand the eligibility requirements and how the program works. Details about each opportunity can be found in the links below.

3. Update your resume and cover letter

You may apply for up to three different opportunities. Please make sure your resume is up-to-date and that you customise your cover letter for each opportunity that you’re applying for. Applying to the Scholars Program is competitive so it’s worthwhile to give yourself extra time to polish your cover letter and resume.

4. Prepare your application

You will need to provide a separate resume and cover letter for each opportunity. You will also need to provide a list of references. Your cover letter, resume, and references must be saved as one PDF document, using the following naming convention: Project number_First name_Last name.pdf (e.g., 2022-072_Jenny_Smith.pdf).

British Columbia Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research (BC NEIHR)

To develop research skills and assist with student burdens related to financial, family, community and cultural responsibilities, the BC NEIHR supports Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) graduate students and postdoctoral fellows by annual competitions for Master’s and Doctoral scholarships and biennial (every two years) for Post-Doctoral fellowships.

BC NEIHR Master’s Scholarship Program

The BC NEIHR launches an annual competition for Master’s Scholarships valued at $17,500 each. Each year, recipients are invited to a Learning and Sharing Circle (with funded Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations), where they present their work and speak about their participation in this Scholarship program.

Value: $17,500 for 1 year
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship Program

The BC NEIHR launches an annual competition for Doctoral Scholarships valued at $35,000 each. Each year, recipients are invited to a Learning and Sharing Circle (with funded Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations), where they present their work and speak about their participation in this Scholarship program.

Value: $35,000 (1 year)
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship Renewal Program

The objective of the BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship Renewal program is to continue to support the development of research skills and assist in the training of Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) doctoral students enrolled in British Columbia (BC) institutions. This scholarship program is for students who: previously received a BC NEIHR Doctoral Scholarship; continue to demonstrate achievement in graduate studies; and show partnership potential with Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations.

Value: $35,000 (renewal of 1 year)
Application Deadline: 1 February 2022

BC NEIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Value: $59,398 per year (varying duration)
