Slides from Monday & Wednesday classes will be added here either shortly before or after the class meetings on each topic.
This page is for all parts of the course up through Kant; the rest of the slides will be on a separate page because this one will get too long otherwise.

And in case you’re interested, here is how Epicurus argues that there is nothing but matter and void in the universe, and that material things are made up of atoms. I was going to discuss this in class, but we ran out of time. Note that it is not in the readings we did! Epicurus, physics, argument outline (PDF)
Because I got behind we didn’t finish discussing these in class on Wed. Jan. 17, and some of you might want to write your essays on Epicurus. The outline for the essay is due Monday Jan. 22, and I won’t see you all before then.
So I recorded a not-professional and not-exciting video screen cast with the rest of the slides (I’m really selling this video well, eh?). This is entirely optional for you to watch; it is for those who want to write on Epicurus and want to hear a bit more before they work on their outlines due Monday. I’ll talk more about the material in the video on Monday Jan. 22.
Timeline of the video below:
- (0:00-1:07) intro to the video and a bit of summary of the last couple of slides from Wed. Jan. 17’s class
- (1:07-2:12) Goal of Life: Ataraxia
- (2:13-4:53) How to Live the Best Life (natural, necessary, unnecessary, vain desires)
- (4:54-6:48) Friendship is important for the best life
- (6:49-10:00) Virtues important for the best life
- (10:01-11:50) Virtues only good because they lead to ataraxia

Moral Relativism
Because questions about moral relativism and objectivism were coming up in class, I decided to make a few slides and talk about it a bit right after discussing Kant. Here is the brief set of slides (and I didn’t have time to make them look very nice…mostly words!): Moral Relativism slides (pptx)
You can also download them as PDF on Speakerdeck.
Thank you for posting this video! I’m really enjoying the class so far.
Thanks…I’m glad you found the video useful, and I’m glad you are finding the class enjoyable! 🙂
