BYOD – Bring your Own Device

light-bulb-1002783_1280Do you have access to iPads or tablets, do your students come to school with mobile tech? Are you looking to explore how to incorporate this digital tech on the upcoming practicum? Are you wondering how you can increase student engagement AND student learning?

Bring your own device is an ongoing issue in education, with opinions on different approaches. You will hear educators advocate for everything from free, open use to banning (or lock boxing). Regardless of your initial perception about potential for distraction, it is important to think a bit more critically as a teacher when it comes to the potential value of allowing access to mobile devices in the classroom (just as it is important to consider the potential drawbacks and possible proactive remedies).

There are many considerations teachers will keep in mind when integrating student owned devices in the classroom. K12 Blueprint (an Intel initiative) has a BYOD Toolkit  sharing some benefits, approaches and potential issues.

(some) Considerations:

Purpose:

  • what are the lesson objectives and how might students’ devices support meeting them?
  • might students benefit from ‘just-in time’ access to technologies and the familiarity of the digi-tech they are carrying with them (for research? sharing? creation? translation? assistive apps?
  • how can the teacher incorporate critical digital literacy development? (authentic experiences in the classroom using students’ own devices affords a more authentic experience than simply learning ‘about’ digital literacies and citizenship.)

Access:

  • is there public wifi or guest wifi at the school?
  • what are the school rules around byod?
  • equity – do your students have access to devices?
    • Tip: Gather information from students – have them let you know privately about their access to technology (vs. hands up/public sharing about access)
    • Have students engage in partner and group work – with one device per group (Be considerate and conscious of equity, diversity – don’t begin with ‘if you don’t have a device, then…’
    • Provide options for how to complete the work – some students with access may still choose to use paper and pencil for some tasks

Management

– what are the school rules? what are the class expectations?

  • Be open, transparent and have a class discuss.
  • Consider collectively creating a set of guidelines/class constitution.
  • Ensure students know when it isn’t appropriate or necessary to use their devices and for what purpose.
  • As teacher, be an active participant in the classroom; facilitate instruction, circulate and avoid leading from the front.

(some of the) Benefits to students

  • organization (many students effectively use their mobile devices for the notes, calendar and project management applications – disallowing access will impact these students, and possibly their progress, in a negative way)
  • learning needs (students with particular learning needs will benefit from various assistive technologies that are available in their pockets… IF they are allowed access. Consider the need for translator apps, speech to text, text to speech, grammar check and other assistive technologies. As teachers we have a duty to accommodate our students’ learning needs… their own devices may be able to play a valuable part.
  • study assistance (students can use the camera app to take snaps of slides or notes to support homework)
  • critical digital literacy development (Read “Mapping Digital Literacy Policy and Practice” by MediaSmarts, a Canadian non-profit)

Interactive Classrooms – iClickers for active learning

iClickers are handheld and wireless elearning devices in which students can respond to questions by the click of a button to answer in class quizzes and polls. With its real time response capabilities, the results from the assessment can be tracked instantly and displayed back to the class. Lessons can be customized with this feedback as teachers get a feel for whether their students are understanding important concepts. There are many related technologies and strategies to support real time engagement and all-class response.

There is potential value for student response systems (SRS) to support active engagement in the classroom. As teachers, we need to consider the benefits and the potential drawbacks of different systems before incorporating. By keeping in mind that the efficacy of any student response system depends on the quality of the questions and how we use the system, we can make a more informed selection. There has been research that greater efficacy and increases in student learning are achieved when an SRS is coupled with socio-constructivist methods. The use of these systems along with student discussion and pair share also leads to greater student satisfaction.

See this ‘educause’ article to get you started thinking about using iclickers or other SRS as part of an active learning approach. The notion that engaging the ‘backchannel’ during lectures adds an active component to this more passive form of teaching is taking hold with the growth in BYOD (bring your own device) and the need to start harnessing the value of this trend. Check out ‘TodaysMeet’ or Slido.  Many local school districts (Coast Metro) have adopted Office 365 as the district standard. A Backchannel chat is incorporated into their learning tools (TIP: consider ‘moderating’ your chat to ensure posted content is appropriate).

Did you know that there are two class sets of iClickers (and controllers) available on loan through the Scarfe Education Library for instructors and teacher candidates? All you need is the clicker set (which includes a ‘base station’) and a computer hooked up to a projector.  iClickers can support interaction, formative and summative assessment in any classroom – regardless of age level or size – and are relatively simple for teachers and students to use.

Idea – for some ‘proactive’ classroom management, hang or display signs showing the ‘choices’ related to the letters on the clickers.

Backchannel/ Informal Assessment Tools Comparison Chart

iClickers are just one type of Student Response System (SRS). There are many alternatives to iClickers to support engagement, interactivity and assessment. A few of my favourites (all are free and compatible across platforms):

Try:  ‘Plickers’ – The very low tech, high tech version of an SRS. All you need is some downloadable class cards and one smartphone. The students hold their cards up based on their answer (A, B, C, D), the teacher scans the cards from anywhere in the classroom using a smartphone, tablet or ipad, or even the gym, and the responses are automatically entered. The class can view a graph of responses if you connect your computer to a projector and you can easily see responses.

or Try: Socrative – a free online digital technology that can be used with any handheld or personal computing device (as long as there is internet access). One of the benefits that I see of Socrative over iClickers is the ability to have students answer questions with short answers. Socrative allows the instructor to create quizzes and games that can be saved and re-used or ask questions ‘on the fly’ orally or in writing. It even has a built in ‘exit slip’ for students to complete. Socrative, like iClickers and Plickers, allows the instructor to view and save data.

Another alternative for in-class polling is PollEverywhere. A poll (of one or several questions) can be set up as needed or in advance and made live. Students respond via text messaging or online.

Kahoot is a ‘game-based’ student response system complete with sound effects that purports to ‘make learning awesome’. Try it and see for yourself. Remember though, it’s about the questions you ask and the interactivity you provide more than the app! Students respond using their computers.

A Paid option that Alixa (IB-PYP teacher candidate) introduced me to today that I’ll be checking out is ‘Lecture Tools’. The teacher sets up an account. Each student then needs to set up an account using his/her email (a limitation I think and privacy issues to consider if you use this). The teacher can upload PowerPoint or Evernote slides and integrate quizzes (including short answer) into their presentation. Each student can take notes on the slides and answer questions as they appear in the presentation (live on their own screen). Theirs notes and responses are saved for them for the next time they login. They can even see a graph of responses and view all short answer responses. Terrific for studying!

Create your own gif’s

A GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is a file format for both animated and static images. Gif files are well-suited for the web due to the level of ‘compression’ (how small they are and how fast they load). Gif files can be ‘static’ images or animated. Consider how you might ‘perk up’ your presentations using these interactive images… or perhaps challenge a student to create their own (think ‘makerspace!)

Tech integration in your Math classroom

Moving beyond the worksheet-like practice of facts using one of the many popular apps is of value in today’s elementary math classroom! If we are seeking to develop deeper understanding of math concepts with our students, we must look to more authentic ways to integrate technology. Below are some links that might support this in your classroom:

Graphing stories is a collaboration between Dan Meyer (an excellent speaker and someone I follow on Twitter) and BuzzMath. Real life situations are presented on video and students are challenged to graph what they see.  http://www.graphingstories.com/

Visit the MathMunch Blog (a Weekly Digest of the Mathematical Internet) for some tremendous ideas, videos and links to help you explore various math concepts with your class. One post looks at Math Art Tools (or, as I like to call it with my elementary students Math + Art = MArt)

We know that looking at mistakes can help us to develop an understanding of concepts. Teachers could use Math Mistakes as an activating strategy at the beginning of a lesson or unit. Students and teachers can work through a variety of problems to determine where the ‘solver’ went wrong.

Supports for learning to teach math available online (not ‘tech integrated’ but some decent resources and suggestions for teaching can be found on MathWire. Visit  Math lab for video segments and descriptions of effective math lessons facilitated by master teachers.

Whatever you do, try to engage students through hands on learning and exploration. Consider Inquiry in your math class. Provide an essential question and facilitate as students explore & discover the key vocabulary and the concepts.

Resource Evaluation and curation

Learning to access resources from various modalities, evaluate them based on a set of clear criteria and curate them using a personal digital library can aid students and teachers in conducting inquiry or simply preparing for class! Below, you will find a pdf file of a presentation we developed to support an inquiry based unit planning assignment for LLED351. iPad Possibilities

Technology use for technology’s sake is not what we are striving for in education today. Transforming learning by providing opportunities that would not otherwise be afforded is a goal that, with emerging technologies and increased access, may be achievable. This transformation can be as simple as allowing for as-needed differentiation, as is the case when providing a student with the option to audio record, video record or ‘screen capture’ record his/her ideas or can include such opportunities as sharing their ideas and creations with a larger audience online.

Explore some ways to connect with students and provide for interactivity – my top 5 apps for student engagement and expression (including some that are cross platform!). Download the Handout for more information.

Always explore with a critical eye and ask yourself key questions such as:
• Is it intuitive?
• Is it interactive? Does it support content creation and collaboration?
• Can you edit once you’ve started?
• Can work be easily exported?

Some ‘current’ favourite Apps for student ‘content’ creation (as selected by 3rd & 7th graders). Download the hand outs for more info on each!

ComicLife – This intuitive app allows students to create comic book style pages using their own photos, imported images and text bubbles. It has a wide variety of fonts, tools and layouts available to create very individual works of art. Also available on MAC and PC desktop and laptops.

Inspiration – I love Concept Mapping software. It allows for a great deal of self-expression and allows the student to experiment with categorizing and organizing his/her thoughts, images & concepts. This software, along with the more ‘primary-oriented’ Kidspiration is intuitive with a large clip art gallery. Available on iPad, MAC and PC and online via Webspiration.

White Board Style apps:
All have community forums and include camera, photo import, drawing and text tools. I find these highly useful for pre-, post-, and formative assessment as well as storytelling.
ShowMe : intuitive, single page; no editing once you begin recording.
WhiteBoard (by GreenGar Studios) Affords ‘peer to peer collaboration’ in real-time; build with layers
ExplainEverything Multi-page; editing features
