A special THANK YOU to the amazing SPAN 302 students Mela Blau, Coral Stewart, and L. T. for co-organizing the fundraiser “Help Community Library Villa Guadalupe.” A group of professional, enthusiastic, talented, and truly generous students.
THANK YOU DONORS!
You helped us reach, and surpass, our fundraising goal of $3,500! An enormous THANK YOU to each individual who donated: students, colleagues, friends, family, friends of friends. GRACIAS for your generosity! Every dollar will have an impact on many families, children and youth that every day look for safe spaces for creativity, learning and play in Casa de Lectura Villa Guadalupe.
Take a look at how your contributions and the incessant enthusiasm and strength of Fundación Ratón de Biblioteca, wall reparation crew members, muralist Santiago Rodas and his talented team, have helped advance the Casa de Lectura project, Villa Guadalupe!
About the Fundraiser and Casa de Lectura, Villa Guadalupe Community Mural Project:
March, 2021:
We are partners in a service-learning project with Fundación Ratón de Biblioteca in Medellín, Colombia, a community organization that provides library services, fosters literacy and art to vulnerable children, youth and families in peripheral neighbourhoods through four community libraries.
Casa de Lectura “Villa de Guadalupe” needs repairs in the outside wall of the building. The funding will go to those repairs and to the creation of a mural by local artist Santiago Rodas, who will design the image with the participation of the children and families of Villa Guadalupe.
These community spaces that facilitate safe interaction, promote reading, art and play, are crucial for those families who live in areas where there are not enough public spaces. Safety concerns affect their everyday lives. UBC students are working with enthusiasm on several projects and learning while serving the community, and this fundraising is their initiative.
During difficult times, beautiful things are possible if we act together. We stand in solidarity with the people in Colombia, protesting in defense of life & dignity.
