Be A Graduate Student Resident

FCCS Invites Applications from UBC Okanagan Graduate Students for the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre Residency

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies offers a graduate student or postdoctoral student residency at the Woodhaven Eco-Culture Centre.  For 8 months, the awardee lives in a heritage home located on 8 acres of nature conservatory land in the lower Mission area of Kelowna, within the boundaries of a Regional District of the Central Okanagan Park.  This residency is applied for and is competitive.  The Student pays a highly subsidized monthly rent: utilities and internet are included (see below for rates). Please note there are no pets allowed.

The Woodhaven house has two other connected suites with separate entrances; a studio apartment for short term accommodation of students, faculty and visiting artists/scholars as well a second-floor suite which supports FCCS’ FEELed Lab.  As well, there are various events and visitors on property throughout the year.

Individuals interested in becoming a resident should write a letter of application and send it with a copy of their current CV to lacia.vogel@ubc.ca by May 1, 2024.

The application should consist of a letter of interest (max 3 pages, double spaced) and a copy of the applicant’s current CV. The letter should outline why the student would like to be in residence and what plans the student might have to contribute to the place. We have a blog for photos, art and writing; students could commit to hosting a public event during their residency, create eco-art for the property or propose any other creative and interesting contribution.

The applications are assessed and ranked based on the quality and originality of the proposed contributions to the unique ecological and cultural nature of the site, as well as evidence of the applicant’s past scholarly, artistic, professional and/or relevant activities (such as conservation or environmental work). The applicants must be UBC Okanagan graduate students or postdoctoral fellows with a minimum of 10 months left in their program or term at UBC Okanagan. Preference is given to applicants in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies who have not previously enjoyed residence at Woodhaven, but students from other Faculties and previous awardees will still be considered.

Adjudication Process:  Application letters are reviewed and ranked by the FCCS Graduate Committee, which will make a recommendation and provide a ranked list of acceptable applicants to the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in FCCS, who will announce the award in the summer. If an applicant declines the residency, it will be offered to the next applicant on the recommendation list.
