2022

Woodhaven Traditional Knowledge/ Land Use Gathering and Circle

Organized by the FEELed Lab, on March 12, 2022, a gathering was held for those who have interest in learning about, thinking towards, and working within practices of living responsibly with the Land that facilitates our lives here in the Okanagan watershed. This half-day outdoor event was hosted by the Barnes family and will include syilx display items, a syilx traditional plant use walking tour, hemp rope making, and reflection circle.

Creative Writing Book Launch

On April 21, 2022, we hosted a launch for two new books of poetry by creative writing professors, Nancy Holmes for her newest book of poetry, Arborophobia, and Matt Rader for his book Ghosthawk. The event also feature readings by creative writing students Natalie Rice (MFA), Sharon Franklet (MFA), Mackenzie Tennant (BA) and Mathew Wanbon (BA).

SUMMER 2015

The Woodshed Readings Series says goodbye to a grand summer of readings and music.  Thanks to our organizer, Connal McNamara, the Canada Council for the Art, The Eco Art Incubator, the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and the Association for Literature, Environment and Culture in Canada. On Friday, August 21st , Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre will be hosting poet, novelist and essayist Theresa Kishkan. Musicians, singer-songwriter Darian Saunders and operatic beat-boxer Sami Al-khalili will be on hand to perform their magic for us. Poets Mathieu Aubin and Jessica Bonney will perform their work. Join us at Woodhaven for a finale farewell to what has been a truly wonderful summer of words, metaphors and music. This is a free event and everyone is welcome!

Sarah de Leeuw:  On Friday August 7th at 7pm, UBC’s Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre is honoured to welcome author and human geographer Sarah de Leeuw. De Leeuw will be reading, presenting and taking questions. As well, author Melissa Hart will be reading from her Young Adult novel, Queen of the Godforsaken (launching from Thistledown Press in October 2015), Brianna Fergson will be sharing some poetry with us and operatic beat-boxer and music-man Sami Al-khalili will be filling the pine trees with song. Join us at Woodhaven, 969 Raymer Rd. Kelowna, for this free event: brilliant thoughts, story and music in the forest!

 BEAT SALAD! Poetry in the Woods with Wine and Cheese- July 10th 2015

Poetry, music, wine and cheese at Woodhaven Eco-Culture Centre! On July 10th at 6pm join writers W. Mark Giles, Michael V. Smith, Laisha Rosnau, Joan Crate, Matt Rader and others, along with artistic director Lucas Glenn for an evening of original works and Beat performances, live music by Rhoneil, with wine and cheese and all things delicious, at Woodhaven, 969 Raymer Rd. Kelowna, V1W 2A3. Don’t want to make the drive? Take the Beat Salad shuttle from downtown Kelowna starting at 5:30pm, running every hour until 9:30pm. “Beat Salad is the perfect mix of cultural event and natural splendor, held at one of Kelowna’s more exciting arts venues,” said Clayton McCann, host of last year’s show. Beat Salad is an annual poetry/musical night hosted by UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Critical and Creative Studies in partnership with the Regional District of the Okanagan.“Beat” or “Beat Generation” is a term first used by Jack Kerouac in a 1948 conversation with Jack Clellon Holmes. Their talk had turned to the nature of generations and, as Allen Ginsberg recounts, “recollecting the glamour of the Lost Generation [Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein, T.S. Eliot, etc.], Kerouac said, ‘This is nothing but a beat generation’.”

Fred Stenson.  June 12th, 7 PM.  Calgary novelist and non-fiction writer, reading from his latest novel, Who By Fire.

Joanne Arnott with Nicola Campbell.  June 5th, 7 PM.  Poet Arnott read with local poet and children’s writer, Nicola Campbell.

Gothic Fiction Night with Dania Tomlinson, May 28th, 2015, 7 PM.

Russell Thornton a celebrated poet, currently shortlisted for this year’s Griffin Poetry Prize, will be getting us off to a grand start on Friday, May 15th. 7pm. 969 Raymer Rd, Kelowna. This is a free event and everyone is most welcome to attend.

 

2014

Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre 2014 Summer Programs Were A Success!

From May until August 30th 2014, the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC Okanagan hosted a series of summer celebrations in nature. Thanks to program facilitator Kelly Shepherd (MFA student), nearly every week over the summer, the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre was the site of readings, talks, music, workshops, and other cultural events.  The events fell into two categories: 1) special, single events or workshops and 2) The Woodshed Reading Series, a regular literary and music event that occurred approximately every two weeks. The Woodshed Reading Series info can be found on Facebook at “The Woodshed Readings”Over 200 people attended the events, and 35 artists presented work or were in residence throughout the summer.  Thanks to the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, the Work Study program at UBC, the Eco Art Incubator and the Regional District of the Central Okanagan for sponsorship, funding and support.
