ROCHESTER — Bill Ayers came to Michigan to talk about the future of education reform in the United States, but the anti-war activist, who participated in a campaign of bombing public buildings during the 1960s and ’70s, could not escape his past.

A line of 20 protesters with signs filled the back wall of a lecture hall at Oakland University on Tuesday as Ayers gave a brief talk on democracy and education.

Some booed when Ayers entered the room, while about 170 OU students, faculty and alumni applauded the college professor who discussed what he termed “savage inequities” in education that affect minorities, women and gays.

Where some describe a corresponding disintegration of civil discourse or a scapegoating of Israel for a complex set of problems, others celebrate a newfound space in which to be critical of Israel — to mount a challenge to what they see as a dominant discourse, so to speak.

A large group of students from Roybal High School and Miguel Contreras Learning Complex in downtown Los Angeles have walked out of class to protest teacher cuts, authorities said today.

At 10:35 a.m., about 200 students walked about a mile toward the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters at 3rd Street and Beaudry Avenue, LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera said.

The FBI is investigating yet another attack on a university researcher involved in animal experimentation.

A car was burned on Saturday outside the home of the researcher, an associate professor of behavioral neuroscience at the University of California at Los Angeles, an FBI spokesman said. No one was physically injured in the attack, the spokesman said.

A group called the Animal Liberation Front posted a message on its Web site from an entity calling itself the Animal Liberation Brigade claiming responsibility for the arson attack. The statement said the professor “addicts monkeys to methamphetamines and other street drugs” and promised future attacks that cause “a lot more damage than to your property” if the experimentation continues.

Israel activism groups in Canada launched a viral campaign this week called “Students for Peace on Campus” to battle Israel Apartheid Week (IAW).

In just the second day of the week-long series of anti-Israel events, Canada’s Center for Israel Activism and the Hasbara Fellowship and Hillel of Greater Toronto combined their efforts to set up a Web site and distribute YouTube videos aiming to “spread awareness and combat this unacceptable atmosphere on college campuses.”

Hundreds of people rallied outside a New York University building early Friday morning, at times clashing with police officers, to back a student group barricaded inside, The New York Times reported. The student group is demanding a variety of changes in policy, including the release of more information about the university budget and endowment, the return of a union for graduate students, limits on tuition increases, scholarships for Palestinian students and amnesty for those involved in the protest. NYU and the protesting students both accused the other side of making negotiations impossible. Those protesting are providing updates online at Take Back NYU while a parody Web site — Fake Back NYU — has deconstructed the various demands.
