Washington Post: Howard U. Students and Union Workers Protest Over Aid Delays, Labor Practices
About 350 students and union workers crowded the plaza outside Howard University’s administration building Friday morning, protesting a long list of grievances — including problems with on-campus housing, delays in financial aid payments and labor practices — and at one point threatening a sit-in before they were turned away from the building’s doors.

Report from Korean University Irregular Professors Union, Chairman Kim Youngkon:
Korea University laid off 88 irregular professors in July. Professors who have doctorate are except from the law that protects regular professors’ employment rights. Irregular professors lecture 4.2 hours a week average in Korea.
Korean irregular professors have no status in Korean Higher Education Law. Korean irregular professors want the Higher Education Law to be revised.

Inside Higher Ed: ‘Harlem vs. Columbia University’
In 1968 and 1969, students at Columbia University protested against a number of the university’s policies and plans, accusing the institution of racism and imperialism — the latter for the military ties that connected the university to the Vietnam War. Most notably, they opposed Columbia’s intended construction of a gymnasium in nearby Morningside Park, a small green space utilized by the area’s largely black and Puerto Rican residents.

Avalanche-Journal: Texas Tech professors object to Gonzales hiring
More than 40 Texas Tech professors have objected in a petition to Chancellor Kent Hance’s decision to hire former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, according to the petition’s creator.
Petition creator Walter Schaller, a Tech philosophy professor since 1986, said Friday he decided to take action because “with the emphasis on ethics the university has adopted, a guy that misled Congress is not the kind of person we want to represent Texas Tech.”

Inside Higher Ed: 2 Scholarly Groups Issue Statements on Iranian Crackdown
Two scholarly associations last week issued statements about the Iranian government’s crackdown on students and professors at the nation’s universities. The Middle East Studies Association sent a letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressing “serious concern over the murders, mass arrests, brutal beatings, and widespread harassment of Iranian university students.” A statement from the Executive Council of the Modern Language Association said: “Recognizing with alarm the implications for freedom of thought and expression and in the light of its particular responsibility for the humanities in higher education, the Modern Language Association deplores the attacks on Iranian universities, which endanger students, faculty members, and staff members. We express our hope that the government of Iran will refrain from using violence or other repressive measures in these revered centers of learning and teaching.”

World University News: IRAN: Post-election violence spreads to universities
Violence spread from Tehran to the outer provinces and several universities reported clashes between students and security forces, according to UPI. Chancellor of Shiraz University, Mohammad Hadi Sadeghi, resigned from his post last Wednesday after riot police stormed a library and fired tear gas inside.
AP: Mousavi Web site: 70 professors detained in Iran
Seventy university professors were detained in Iran in a widening government crackdown on protesters, according to a Web site affiliated with Iran’s key opposition figure, Mir Hossein Mousavi, who says he was robbed of victory in a rigged presidential election.
The professors were detained on Wednesday, immediately after meeting with Mousavi, said the Kalemeh site, which is affiliated with the opposition leader. The report said it is not clear where the detainees were taken.

The Chronicle: Universities and Students Are at Heart of Continuing Protests in Iran
Protesters continued to throng the streets of Tehran on Tuesday, in the second day of rallies and demonstrations that have erupted in the wake of last Friday’s disputed presidential election. The actions have been called the country’s biggest mass demonstrations since the 1979 Islamic revolution, and, as in that movement, university students are at the heart of much of the action.
Workers World: Harvard University: The banks, layoffs & growing fightback
On June 4, during Commencement Day 2009 at Harvard University—the richest university in the world—graduating students held up signs spelling “N-O L-A-Y-O-F-F-S” inside, while workers on the outside held up the same signs.
For months leading up to commencement, a loose coalition of Harvard students and unions has been protesting layoffs at the university. Comprised of members of the No Layoffs Campaign—started by members of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3650; UNITE/HERE; Service Employees union Local 615; Student Labor Action Movement; and other student activists—this grouping has held rallies, marches and forums demanding no layoffs and no cuts in services.

The New York Times: The New School’s Kerrey Is to Step Down in 2011
Bob Kerrey, whose eight years as president of the New School have been marked by rising enrollment and faculty expansion but also by criticism and recent student protests, announced on Thursday that he would step down when his contract expires on July 1, 2011. Mr. Kerrey, 65, revealed his decision Wednesday evening to the university’s board of trustees at their final meeting of the academic year. The board unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming its support for Mr. Kerrey and committing itself to a smooth transition.

Inside Higher Ed: Bob Kerrey Will Leave New School Presidency — in 2011
Bob Kerrey announced Thursday that he will leave the presidency of the New School in June 2011, when his contract expires. He said in a statement that his intent has long been to leave at that time, but he also acknowledged the controversies at the New School, whose student and faculty groups have become increasingly critical of his management. “To understate the case this has been a challenging semester for the university and my family,” he said. “There have been moments when I reached the limit of my willingness to continue serving as your president. There have been moments when my tendency to fight and to directly engage in confrontation, argument and disputes have been counterproductive.” A Web site maintained by students who have clashed with Kerrey offered its own analysis of Kerrey’s plans and record, ending its commentary by saying “onward in struggle.”
