Over the term we do a number of projects. In the first week of class students start the tissue culture project where they culture 5 types of explants and follow their development throughout the term. Depending on scheduling (and weather we do one or two vegetation surveys. One takes place in Camosun Bog where as the location of the other varies (Agroforestry Trail at UBC, Stanley Park, Lynn Canyon).
There is a project component to the course where students develop their own activities. The idea is that they select a topic they find interesting that has some connection with bryophytes. Some students develop learning activities for university or elementary/secondary level instruction accompanied with teacher’s guides. Other projects include scanning electron microscopy, ecological studies, experiments, interactive games, guides to walks in trails (Stanley Park, Pacific Spirit Park) and gardens (Nitobe).Gardens).
