Subclass Dicranidae

Generally defined by a haplolepidous peristome with a single circle of peristome teeth and lacking an exostome.  They are acrocarpous – erect stems, tufts, and terminal sporophytes

Gametophyte and sporophyte traits beyond peristome morphology can vary widely, but the peristome formula and developmental pattern are key identifiers.
