Subclass Funariidae contains several orders including Funariales, Encalyptales, and Disceliales.  Species are typically acrocarpous with archegonia and sporophytes at stem tips. The peristome is diplolepidous and opposite (inner and outer teeth aligned) The sporophytes in Funariales often have a well‑defined annulus facilitating operculum shedding.
