Summertime fun! – PDA Beach BBQ Party on July 20th

Fun in the sun! Join us for a Beach BBQ Party on Locarno Beach
on July 20th!

We will begin BBQing at 4 pm.

What to expect:
Free food and non-alcoholic drinks provided by the PDA!
Hang out in the sun or get active!

Feel free to bring additional food and drinks as well as whatever you need for fun activities (soccer, frisbee, …). We will bring a volleyball net and a volleyball.

Don’t celebrate International Star Wars Day alone! Join us on May the 4th for a joint UBC-SFU tour of the magnificent brewery scene in East Van! We’ll be meeting at Value Village at 4PM to get ourselves outfitted, then we’ll be off to Storm Brewing at 4:45PM for our first beer! Costumes are highly encouraged (but not required). Lunch Webinar: How to Set Yourself up for Job Search Success after Your Postdoc

UBC postdocs are welcome to join the Brown Bag Lunch Webinar organised by the SFU PDA. It’s going to take place on Wednesday, April 24th, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Jennifer Polk from Beyond the Professoriate will be giving a webinar about non-faculty job search and strategies postdocs can starting implementing today to set themselves up for career success outside academia. There are two ways to participate!

1. The UBC PDA will join the SFU webinar remotely via zoom. Feel free to join us in the LSI classroom 1410 at 12:20 pm. Please sign up here if you are interested in joining us at UBC, Vancouver campus.

2. Alternatively, you can join our fellow SFU postdocs at SFU in the Research Commons Seminar Room (Room 7010). Free lunch and refreshments will be provided at SFU. Please register here if you are interested in joining at the SFU Campus.

PDA Social Event: Whistler Weekend (April 5-7)

Let’s go and spend an exciting weekend in Whistler together! Network with your fellow postdocs, discuss your research, and whether you’d like to ski/snowboard/cross country/snowshoe or enjoy a day at the spa, there will be something for everyone!

Thank you everyone, who partook in Postdoc Research Day 2018!

It was a big success this year – 125 people attended the meeting, of which 68 joined the networking reception!

There were so many interesting talks and posters, which sparked many questions from the audience and interesting discussions. Also, the keynote lecture by Dr. Matthew Dahabieh, and career panel discussions were well attended, and again, met enthusiastic questions and discussions from the floor.

It’s less than a week till this year’s Postdoc Research Day!

Thank you very much for those who submitted the abstracts. As usual, it was a tough choice for us to select the final competitors from so many excellent submissions across UBC. Here is the abstract book this year, which includes all the participating abstracts (both oral and poster presentations) as well as in-depth details for Keynote Lecture and Career Panel Discussion.

Holiday Party – December 12th, 2018

Note that the party if fully booked, however you can still register for the waiting list. 

Join us for our annual Holiday Party on December 12th at Nuba in Kitsilano!

  • Where: Nuba in Kitsilano (Lebanese, vegetarian)
  • When: Wednesday, December 12, at 6 pm
  • Cost: $10 per person (+ 5% tax / 18% gratuity) for the Sharing Menu. Everyone pay for their drinks.

Sign up here by Monday, December 3rd. We have booked a semi-private room with a limited number of seats. Places will be based on a first come first serve basis. UBC PDA subsidies on the food, so bring your family and celebrate the holiday season before you wrap up the year.

UBC-PDA social: Mt. Seymour Hike + Dinner

Join us for a hike and/or dinner Saturday September 29th.  Register for one or both components here.
Hike details:

The hike will take place weather permitting! Update will be sent close to event time.
When: meet at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 29th
We will meet up in front of the kiosk at the farthest end of the upper Mt. Seymour parking lot.
The hike will be the Mt. Seymour trail, which is ~9km return and elevation gain of 450m.  If you would prefer  less or more challenging options, there are other trails  that departs from the same parking lot.
Details: please remember to bring plenty of water, a lunch, sunscreen, a hat, and the 10 essentials for hiking.  We will arrange a car pool for anyone interested – please indicate if you need a ride or can offer a ride on the registration form.
The hike will be weather permitting – we will email all registrants the day before  the hike to confirm.

Dinner details:

When: 6:00 p.m., Saturday, September 29th
Where: Colony Kitsilano (3255 W Broadway)
First round of appetizers is on us.
Details: please RSVP even if you’re not planning to attend the hike, so that we know how big of a table to get.
We will meet for dinner rain or shine!

Research Day : December 3rd!

Research Day will be back on December 3rd, 2018!

Research Day is a free one day conference for UBC postdocs organized by UBC PDA. We invite all the UBC postdocs to present their work in oral and poster presentation sessions (your chance to win prizes!). There will be a keynote lecture as well as a career panel session inviting reps from local companies as well as freshly started faculty to share their stories in advancing their career beyond postdoc phase.
