Boston Globe: UMass gets $364,000 penalty in bias case

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been fined $10,000 and ordered to pay one of its English professors $154,000 in lost wages and $200,000 in damages for emotional distress as part of a decision issued by the state’s antidiscrimination agency.

According to the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, its June 1 decision in favor of LuLu Sun, associate professor of English, also includes the “unprecedented step’’ of ordering the university to promote Sun to full professor. Sun’s complaint to MCAD alleged discrimination based on her gender, race, and Chinese ancestry.

An associate professor at the University of British Columbia has accused the institution of “racial bias” because she was denied a promotion and her complaint about unfair treatment was later rejected by an internal review.

Jennifer Chan, an associate professor in the department of educational studies, said in a statement released Tuesday that she has now filed a complaint with the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal.

SUSSEX COUNTY — A former adjunct professor at Sussex County Community College may proceed with a portion of a lawsuit she filed against the college that alleges she was not rehired because of her age, an appeals court has ruled.

While upholding a lower court’s decision that rejected most of the claims made by Joan Stephenson, now 70, a two-judge panel ruled she can proceed with a portion of her lawsuit that alleges age discrimination.

He cites the billions spent on fighting AIDS “without recognizing the morally aberrant sexual behavior … causing its spread” and the “sad practice” of colleges and other employers offering domestic partner benefits in a way that “prevents them from providing additional coverage to those of us adhering to traditional sexual moral standards”; he goes on to say that gay people are causing economic problems in fields such as real estate and divorce law

Morehouse College has fired a woman and reprimanded another for discriminatory comments made via their work e-mail accounts.

The fired woman worked as an administrative assistant in the president’s office, according to reports. After receiving an e-mail forward that included wedding photos of a gay couple, she forwarded the e-mail to others and made comments that were considered discriminatory.

The University of the Cumberlands, a Baptist university in Kentucky, has told a youth group from the Broadway Baptist Church, in Fort Worth, Texas, that it has revoked an invitation for the students to stay at the university while working to help the disadvantaged in Appalachia. The Associated Baptist Press reported that the move followed criticism of the church for not being sufficiently anti-gay, as evidenced by its admission that it has a few gay members and that they have served on search committees. The university declined to talk to the wire service about its decision. In 2006, the university expelled a student for being gay.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued a historically black college on behalf of three white faculty members who said they were denied jobs or let go because of their race.

Federal officials today simultaneously announced the lawsuit and an agreement between the EEOC and Benedict College to settle the case. The institution said it would pay $55,000 to each of the instructors. The college also agreed to remind staff about its employment policies prohibiting discrimination, train administrators and faculty members, and make periodic reports to the EEOC.
