Module 1 Objectives

The objective of this module is to introduce you to the general principles, common practices and new trends in silviculture. The aim is to provide a solid foundation so you can understand forest resource management and protection. After completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the basic principles for evaluating forest site quality.
  2. Identify practices that can be used to control species composition and structure of a forest stand by following the principle: “The right tree species for the right site”.
  3. Identify key practices that affect the successful establishment of forests, including selection of seed provenances, seedling production, tree planting, maintaining and harvesting.
  4. Describe the new trends of silviculture and explain the influencing factors.
