Crunch time

It’s been so long since I last blogged! In my defense, it’s crunch time for all of my classes so I scarcely make time to feed myself! For example: I have a philosophy paper due Friday, an English draft due the following Monday, an anthropology portfolio due the next day, a history paper and the revised English paper due 4 days later, and an archaeology paper due that next day. Not to mention finals in a couple of weeks! I HATE MY LIFE.

Although I must say I’m doing WAY better in classes this semester than I was doing last semester. Or maybe it’s just because I have more confidence? Either way, I’m doing far better. Last week I almost cried when I found out I got an A- on my philosophy midterm (SCOOORE!), but of course then I got mad at myself a bit because after looking at the questions I got marked down on, I realized I HAD known the rest of the answers, but I had either blanked a bit or rushed myself because we only had 50 minutes. I don’t care who you are, 50 minutes is not enough time to write 7 decent short answers and an essay!

My non-academic life has also been spiffy! (Did I just use the word spiffy?) my sorority won Greek Week (booya!) a couple of weeks ago! VICTORY! I have very fond memories of the 7-legged race..lol. We also had our Formal this past weekend, where I realized a new dream of mine: TO BECOME A DJ. I have about a million dreams though, so I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to accomplish this one. Oh and I’m not particularly proud of this, but in the space of two weeks I have not only watched the entire Ouran High School Host Club anime series, but I’ve also READ all 69 published chapters of the manga. TWO WEEKS. I don’t even know what to think of myself! Forget what I said earlier about academics ruling my life; apparently my mind has been at Ouran High. The main characters are all at the top of their classes though, so I have actually been inspired a few times to stop reading and get back to work. So loophole: it’s been good for me! baha

Lately I’ve also been stressing about my future, mainly my major and what I’m doing after graduation. I have this nagging idea that I should switch into the faculty of science and pursue astronomy (which I love), but I really want to graduate after four years, and switching and getting all the classes would be a major pain in the ass. But I’m also seriously considering applying for the school of Creative Writing, since another dream of mine (see previous paragraph) is to become a novelist. This one is the scarier option, because there’s only a very small chance I’d ever be able to support myself as a writer and I don’t want to wind up working as a toothbrush restocker at a dentist’s office.

Although that wouldn’t be that bad. I imagine I’d get free toothbrushes and toothpaste and stuff.

Anyway. So I’d like to go for the Creative Writing program, but then (dream alert) I’d also like to be a lawyer, so I don’t know how that could work out? Plus if I went with CR I don’t know if I could double major..not that I’d know what to double major in since right now my mind is floating around anthropology, English, and philosophy. I wish I could like quadruple major in four years, while simultaneously learning languages (I want to learn Italian and Japanese), and still have time for random fun classes (like the wine tasting class or an art class!), all of which would get me into a top law school!! And of course having a killer fashion sense and fabulous parties the whole time. Oh yeah and I’d have time to read/watch manga/anime, study abroad, and work as a skydiving instructor during the summer. A girl can dream.

Oh and the rest of the Blog Squad got together on Friday but I wasn’t theeere! 🙁 Although I was at Formal, so it’s not like I was sitting at home reading Ouran (ha!), but still. I should propose another get together just after classes end but before finals begin. STUDY DATE! We could rent out a room in Irving and put a sign on the door with a witty, catchy slogan that entices people to visit our websites and peek in the window, amazed at how scholarly we look with piles of books, crumpled papers, towers of coffee cups, wearing our glasses (we’ll all mysteriously require corrective lenses that day), and periodically having passionate discussions about the effects of GMOs on the suffering economies of the world (complete with pie graphs and utilization of white boards)!!!

^^My imagination astounds me. I need a vacation.

I-I Know Just-Just What You Are-Are-Are

I am SO glad that Britney Spears is back.

I just really needed to throw that out there. I know this isn’t exactly breaking news, but whatever.

If anyone wants to get me tickets for her Circus tour, feel free. 🙂

Oh and I just noticed that the date on the womanizer’s iPhone in the beginning of the Womanizer video is April 20th….4/20. And the whole video is kind of wonky because Britney keeps appearing as various vixens in his 9-5 workday, and of course there are the kinda trippy scenes at the end where all four Britneys are clawing at him. Concidence? I think not.

On another note, I can’t help thinking about the Womanizer video from an “academic” standpoint.

In the video she’s getting all angry at Mr. Womanizer because he’s doing as his name implies, womanizing, yet Britney is traipsing about in sexy outfits, not to mention those scenes where she’s naked in some sort of sauna. Regardless of her intentions, she’s using her body to sell her song, therefore empowering womanization (is that a word?). However, it could also be said that she’s using her most powerful means to her advantage: like it or not, one of a female’s biggest sources of power is her sexuality; wouldn’t it theoretically be smart to use whatever means you have to be succesful?

^^a combination of ideas from my English, anthro, and philo classes

Enough Engthrophiling though. I just made up a word.  I-I have a test to study for. 🙂

God Save My Laptop

I feel like I’ve dropped off the face of the Earth for the past few days. Why, you may ask?

RIP LAPTOP

Backstory: My roommate and I bunked our beds, she on top and I on bottom. I may have blogged about this before.

What happened Wednesday night: My roommate came in from a night out, while my friend and I sat on the floor leaning against my bed watching The Princess Bride on my laptop (Inconceivable!). Anyway so she got into bed, fell asleep, la la la, then out of nowhere she fell out of bed and landed on us (and the laptop). Computers are pretty sturdy things, mind you, but she must have landed like RIGHT on the spot where the internal hard drive is, because the computer froze and didn’t even respond to Ctrl+Alt+Delete (which brings up the task manager). So I decided to just shut it off completely and turn it back on, but EPIC FAIL, this black screen came up and said that it couldn’t detect an internal hard drive. I couldn’t recall removing an internal hard drive, so my worst fears were confirmed: my roommate had killed my laptop.

I’ve since opened it up and looked around, and nothing seems to be wrong with the actual computer. Although when I opened the slot to where the hard drive was, a random little screw fell out..hm. Upon reflection I never figured out where it went, but I was able to find another place where it fit so I didn’t really care. Oops.

ANYWAY it’s now been about three days and I still don’t have a laptop. I’m using my roommate’s right now, as she is out eating sushi and going to Best Buy to see if she can buy me a new hard drive, because I’m assuming that’s the only problem. Today I found out that my laptop is under warranty (yay, right?), BUT since I’m in Canada right now I’d have to pay to get an International Warranty before Dell could send me a new hard drive. And their offices are only open Monday to Friday, so I’d have to wait another two days, call, then wait like a week while they’d ship it to me. Does the universe not understand that I am in college, and have two papers due this week, as well as three other large research projects that I need to work on! Not to mention two of my classes have required readings and discussions online!

Bah. But I digress. My point is that I would like all of us to pray that my laptop gets fixed SOON, and if it doesn’t, that God grants me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, and the freaking patience to wait until things do change. Oh and that my friends don’t mind me using their laptops whenever I see that they’re not using it. “You’re going to the bathroom? Can I use your laptop kay thanks!”

Oh and I suppose I should include words of wisdom or whatever. If you’re an international student and worry about the future of your electronics, make sure you get all warranty-things sorted out BEFORE you switch countries of residence. -.-

Goodbye 2008!

With the dawn of the new year approaching  (quite literally..baha), I’ve found myself thinking about this past year, and if I’m happy with the way I’ve lived it. How would my life have been different if I hadn’t _______? If I had _____? If I had chosen to _____? I find it easier to organize my thoughts in lists, so here I go..

Things I Think I Maybecouldashouldawoulda Done Differently In 2008

1) I definitely wish I had worked harder in my college classes. This is UBC, so we all were pro at high school, but I wish back in September/October I had realized that I actually have to study to survive college. As it were, I realized this around finals time. 🙂
2) More specifically, oh what I would give to go back in time and not have been so epic fail in French. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.
3) My roommate and I should have called that stupid fridge company every hour on the hour (using several phones of course), DEMANDING our money back. Or hey, maybe even the FRIDGE! Thank God for Sears :’)
4) I would have talked to my grandma more before she passed away.
5) I would have done Grad Nite differently. I should probably explain American Grad Nites: at least where I live, every high school in the area goes to Disneyland on a specified night where Disneyland literally shuts down just for the graduating seniors. I think we have the park from 11pm to 7am? Sometimes this night coincides with the actual date of graduation, but not necessarily. Anyway so I shouldn’t have been such a loser, and instead paid more attention to what one of my best friends (Zoe) wanted.
6) Ooh I woulda stopped Zoe from dating this JERK that was only using her to get over the girl he was (and still is) in love with.
7) Upon reflection I wish I would have actually taken senior photos. Maybe. haha.
8 ) WHY didn’t I talk to the love of my life!!! Gah I hate myself sometimes! le sigh.

Things I Think I Did Right In 2008

1) So glad I got bangs. Best decision ever.
2) I’m so happy that I joined the sorority I did :).
3) Though sometimes I ponder what life would be like if I had chosen another school, overall I’m very happy that I chose UBC. In retrospect, I don’t think I would have fit anywhere else. 🙂
4) Relating to number 3, I’m sooo glad that I was so obsessive/addicted to applying to colleges that I was still looking for schools to apply to in like mid-February (even though I’d already gotten into..3 places?). See, if I had been a normal person and shut myself off from the college-application process after winter break, I never would have applied to UBC! Oh the greatness.
5) Okay I lied about number 1, buying a hamster with my other best friend Caitlin was the best decision ever. His name is Spunk Ransom. Google it.
6) I bless the day that I discovered Rebtel. Did I ever blog about Rebtel? Oh geez okay it’s still a draft. Fail. I’ll finish it up and post it later. Changed my life.
7) Soooo glad I saw Sex and the City and The Dark Knight on their respective opening nights! Good times.
8 ) Surprising my family by coming home for winter break a few days earlier than I told them..just might be my greatest work ever.

Keep your fingers crossed that I get better by tomorrow night! Huddled up on the couch is no way to spend New Years Eve!

PS: The word “would” looks weird to me for some reason right now. Don’t you hate when that happens?

The Joneses

My roommate and I are epic (you remember the bread brawl?), so we’ve accidentally started a production company (of sorts). Oh and we call ourselves the Joneses (which is a story for another day).
For our first filming adventure we decided to document our room-reorganizing process.

And for our first real video, we decided to make a music video for the song “Holiday” by Doktor Kosmos.

We plan on making another video TONIGHT, so be ready!

Spur Of The Moment

Last night I was sitting here in my room chillaxin when my friend Amber walked in carrying scissors.

“Jen!” she said. “Wanna cut your hair? Let’s get bangs!”

So of course I said yes, then got up, grabbed my scissors and hairbrush, and headed into the bathroom.

About 10 minutes later we both had bangs! They’re not side-bangs, but the actual straight-down in the front kind, which I’m told very few people can actually pull off. 🙂

We even got another girl from our floor in on it; she hated her split ends and ended up taking an inch or so off from the bottom. I think we have the makings of beauty salon owners.

This incident made me realize that most of my life’s adventures happen at the spur of the moment.

Take Saturday night, for example. We were supposed to have a party on our floor for Amber’s birthday (this story also has to do with Amber..hm), but it got lame and so around midnight we decided to head downtown and walk around. We were in front of the SRC on the side that faces the bus loop, and I decided to lay down on that metal-grate-looking-thing next to the stairs leading up to the SRC entrance.

Here’s a picture of the SRC I found online..it was the best they had on Google.

Next time you’re by the bus loop/SRC, go to where the red circle is, and to the right of the stairs there is this large metal filter-thing that goes up at maybe a 60 degree angle. Got it? Okay let me continue.

I decided that I wanted to lay down on top of it, so I stepped on it and turned around, intending to lower myself slowly backwards. Somehow I managed to slip and land flat on my back (ha!), and then we ended up taking pictures there. I’d post some, but my friend has them and I don’t feel like tracking her down.

Anyway somehow we came up with the idea of sliding down the giant metal grate, so a couple of us went up and slid down, weee!, etc etc. Around the third time we did it Amber decided to take my spot (I was always on the left side, closest to the wall), and once we got to the ground she jumped up and was like “OMG I THINK I RIPPED MY PANTS!” Sure enough, upon inspection we found a hole on the seat of her pants, and she had to walk around the rest of the night with her shirt pulled way down. Funniest thing ever! We’re still laughing about it. Gotta love these spur of the moment ideas!

Come to think of it, I decided to write this blog spur of the moment. Epic.

Moral of the story: sometimes the best things in life happen unexpectedly. So if you’re walking by a bus about to depart, don’t be afraid to hop on and see where it takes you! If a friend walks into your room with hair bleach and green hair dye, just go for it! We’re in college people, let’s make some good stories to tell our grandkids someday.

Midnight Bread Brawl

My roommate and I just had the most epic of battles. It involved bread, and it ended with..Pepsi shots.

We were just chillin in our room when Jayda turned to me and informed me that the bread she had bought expired the 12th, which was (back then) in exactly 11 minutes. She said “We have 11 minutes to eat this bread..” and I replied “…Or we could throw it at somebody..” “Who?” she asked. “Anyone,” I answered.

9 minutes later we were both sitting at our desks when I brought up the bread again. “We have 2 minutes left,” I said. We looked at each other, and looked at the loaf of bread inbetween us.

I don’t know who threw the first slice, but the rest is history.

About 15 minutes later we found ourselves taking cover underneath our desks, scrambling for whatever remnants of the bread we could find. Most of the loaf had turned into crumbs, but there were many smaller pieces.  It was I that made the first Bread Ball (by mashing together a few of the smaller pieces and rolling it up), but Jayda who mastered the art of saving ammo to hit me all at once with.

Finally though, we each felt that the battle was winding down, yet we were both much too involved to end it.

And then…Jayda found a whole piece of bread. It was perfect, practically untouched. Either this piece of bread had never been thrown, or it was just the strongest one. She picked it up. Then she handed it to me.

What did I do? I did the right thing.

I split the bread in half. One half I kept for myself, and the other went to Jayda.

She then stood up and tacked her piece of bread to her wall.

And I followed suit.

We didn’t speak of what had just happened for a few minutes thereafter, but when we did we laughed for about 5 minutes straight.

Then, overcome by genius, I decided that we should celebrate our shared victory. I got two plastic shot glasses and filled them both with Pepsi. We toasted, looked to our slices of the bread on our walls, then drank.

We are now sitting amongst our bread crumbs, peacefully working on essays. 🙂

Green Mark On Forehead

Oh and this morning I woke up to find a random green mark on my forehead. It still hasn’t come off, so I’ve been wearing a beanie (or a “toque” as people call it up here) all day. If anyone has any information on who did this to me, please tell. Your identity will be kept a secret.

“THERE HE IS!” (Unrelated to this post, don’t worry)

AWKWARD. I came here with a specific writing topic in mind, and as soon as the Write Post page came up I lost it. Dorkus maximus.

Anyway so now that I lost my original train of thought, I feel like talking about books.

I don’t know if you know this, but I read ALOT. University life has not stopped my addiction (I’m trying to quit!), so since I’ve been here I’ve read a couple of books that are totally not on my reading lists. Mind you they’re totally mindless and talk about fashion, boys, secrets, “magical” powers, etc etc, but they’re addictive I swear! I’m not gonna lie though, a big chunk of my addiction for one of these series is because the Twilight series is over (don’t even get me started on what I think of Breaking Dawn..).

First things first: The Private series by Kate Brian. ADDICTIVE SERIES AT ITS BEST. You literally pick up a book and hours later you are A) wondering where the time went and B) angry that the next book doesn’t come out for months. I finished reading the latest book in the series (chronologically at least), Revelation, a few days ago, and the cliffhanger was OUTRAGEOUS. I keep trying not to think about it actually. The next book (titled Paradise Lost. Epic much? Yeah) doesn’t come out until February (February!!)!!! I won’t tell you exactly how Revelation ended, so I’ll write an ending comparable in intensity.

I watched in horror as she pulled a long, gleaming knife out of her coat. Instantly all the air seemed to leave the room. I couldn’t believe my eyes. How could I have ever trusted this girl?

“Karen, put the knife down!” Trey shouted as Beau held him back. “You don’t really want to kill Chloe!”

“Yes I do!” she screamed. She slowly walked around the room, shortening the distance between us.

“My life was perfect before I met you,” she said, meeting my gaze, “and then you came here and made me this. You’re the reason we’re here. You’re the reason you’re about to die.”

Karen stopped walking a few feet in front of me. She raised her knife just as a gust of wind blew through the room, and then my world went black.

It was kinda like that, only more intense and with better writing. You get my point though, HOW could Kate Brian leave us hanging like that for four months!! grrr. She does have a new book out though, titled Last Christmas, set before the first book in the Private series. I’ll get it the next time I make a trip to Chapters. Why am I specifically going to Chapters, you may ask?

Because Revelations will (eventually) be there! No it’s not the same book I was just talking about. This title is plural, duh. Revelations in the third book in the Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz. While not quite as addictive as the Private books, this series nonetheless has had me waiting anxiously for MONTHS. And when I say months, I mean forever. The last book was published May 2007. MAY 2007. WHAT THE HECK. Not as bad as the wait for the final book of Libba Bray’s series though; there was literally like a 3+ year gap between the second and final book of the trilogy.

Anyway so the Blue Bloods series is about vampires, only they’re fully involved in society and are basically the richest and most beautiful people in New York City. Quite a bit of page-space is spent talking about what the characters are wearing and how much Mimi spends at Barneys, but those are totally some of my favorite parts. Come on, when am I going to be able to head to Barneys after school and rack up a 5-figure charge on daddy’s credit card?

Revelations was actually supposed to come out on October 28th (Melissa de la Cruz’s blog SWEARS that the Canadian Hyperion rep SWEARS that they were supposed to be out that day), but here I am a few days later, totally NOT having read it! I went to Chapters on the 28th, nothing. Waited a couple of days, called in, nope they don’t have it. Called in Friday afternoon, THE LADY SAID THEY HAD IT. I went, all excited, only to find out that the fool had been misinformed (LIAR, I SAY!). I haven’t given up yet though. I’m going to call tomorrow morning, and if they don’t have it then, then I guess I’ll give in to the dark side.

I’ll order it online.

Not that I haven’t done that before, but some of the magic is lost when it shows up in a box, as opposed to talking into the Young Adult/Teen section of the bookstore and finding the newest book facing out amidst the other books of the series.

I’ve taken over one of the private study rooms in the Commons Block, and I feel kinda bad not doing any work AT ALL in here, so that’s it for now. On to French exercises..gr. 😉

Quit Playing Games With My Heart

Recently I’ve been nostalgic for the 90s, so I’ve pretty much been playing 90s music 24/7 around here. I’m talking old school Jessica Simpson, Goo Goo Dolls, TLC, Savage Garden, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, various Disney songs, the whole shebang. It’s pretty epic actually. Like I bet most of you guys have forgotten about the timeless musical stylings of S Club 7, but I haven’t!

I haven’t done anything crazy like trying to collect pogs again or play Skip-It, but I may start saying “SIKE!” after everything I say. SIKE! 😉
