UBC TA Institute – July 20-24, 2020

The CTLT Teaching Assistant (TA) Institute is four days of free online professional development workshops open to graduate students and undergraduate TAs. The TA Institute from July 20-24, 2020, includes a collection of workshops designed to support TAs as their roles change with the move to online summer and fall courses. Sessions include; supporting inclusive online classrooms, TA’ing large online classes, preparing for technical difficulties, time management, and leading both asynchronous and synchronous discussion groups. Call for Nominations: Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF)

Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF)

The aim of the CSHRF is to provide a venue for the networking, research exposure and recognition of Canada’s most promising research trainees in the health sciences. Universities have been invited on nominate their top PhD students in health sciences for participation in the forum.

Due to COVID-19, the Canadian Student Health Research Forum will be presented virtually this year from August 24 to 28, 2020.  As such, there will be no travel award funding offered this year.  However, UBC departments are invited to nominate their top PhD students to participate virtually in the conference (present their research via poster presentation). Selected conference participants will be invited to provide a short video presenting their poster; a winner of the poster submissions will be selected and announced during the conference.

This opportunity, just announced today by CSHRF, has a tight deadline.

UBC Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

INTERNAL deadline – October 1st, 2020

The UBC Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies and are available for most fields of research. The number of awards offered presently varies between three and five per year.

Value: an annual stipend of $50,000 for a maximum of two years plus a travel and research allowance of $4,000 over two years.

UBC Okanagan (UBC-O)

  • UBC-O will require potential Killam applicants to submit a Notice of Intent (NOI) to the Office of Research Services (ORS)by September 1, 2020 at 12:00 pm (noon). Applicants are required to complete the NOI Competition Submission Form and upload a Vanier-Banting CCV. ORS will use the NOI to determine applicant eligibility and to inform Deans, Associate Deans of Research, and support personnel of eligible applicants.
  • Full applications, including all attachments, are due from applicants to ORS by October 15, 2020 at 12:00 pm (noon).  ORS will then convene a Standing Review Committee to review the applications received and select the finalists.
  • Completed nomination forms for UBC-O finalists are due from units to ORS by November 12, 2020 at 12:00 pm (noon).

UBC Vancouver (UBC-V)

  • Each UBC Vancouver department or unit sets its own internal deadline for receipt of applications (typically early to mid-October).
  • Each department or unit at the Vancouver campus may forward one nominee to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by November 13, 2020 at 4:00 pm. Rather than using UBC Workspace, a Qualtrics survey link will be provided in the Fall (posted to the Killam Postdoc webpage) for units to upload their nomination.

Call for Nominations: Schmidt Science Fellowships

The Schmidt Science Fellows program aims to provide the next generation of scientific leaders and innovators with an exceptional opportunity.  Fellows receive a stipend of $100,000 and are supported to pursue a one year postdoctoral placement at a world-leading laboratory anywhere in the world in a disciplinary pivot from their PhD.

UBC is one of 100 universities worldwide that have each been invited to nominate students to the international competition.  In 2019, 20 Schmidt Science Fellows were selected to be recipients globally.

Each UBC graduate program is invited to submit 1 nomination to the university-wide competition. Given the highly competitive nature of this opportunity, graduate programs should nominate only an exceptional individual who will stand out amongst top candidates from around the world.

Value: $100,000 for one year
Application deadline: Set by graduate program.  Applicants must submit their application to their UBC graduate program.
