The instructor of FNH 477 001 is looking for 4 TA’s (approximately 72 hours/each).  The job description is below:

WORK PERFORMED

As a PBL group tutor, facilitate students' learning in PBL groups by: encouraging and promoting student participation, asking probing questions, providing students with feedback, facilitating students' provision of peer feedback, and monitoring PBL group work (including Connect posts).  Tutors will also attend weekly tutor meetings in which cases will be discussed and tutors will provide feedback regarding groups' progression through cases to the course instructor;
As a Marker, mark students' assignment papers as well as  objective and subjective portions of the midterm and final exam.  All marking would be completed using rubrics prepared by the instructor.  TA's will be trained and supported in the use of the marking rubrics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Education and Knowledge Requirements: Preference will be given to graduate students in Human Nutrition who have completed Problem-Based Learning tutor training.  Ideal candidates will have a good understanding of nutrition in general, and nutrition and disease prevention in particular.

Experience: Preference will be given to applicants who have prior experience facilitating PBL groups.

Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including skills in providing and receiving constructive feedback.

  • Using a marking guide, marking the subjective part of the midterm and final exam, evaluating the abstract and oral presentation of research projects, and submitting a breakdown of the verified marks via spreadsheet to the instructor.  Both the midterm and the final include multiple choice, short answer, and integration questions.
  • Invigilating the midterm and final exam.
  • Establishing office hours after the midterm.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Education:  Knowledge requirements – preference will be given to students who have obtained an undergraduate degree in nutrition, and have a thorough understanding of nutrient metabolism and metabolic regulations, a strong knowledge in biochemistry and physiology, and a good knowledge in the application of molecular biology in nutrition.

Experience:  Preference will be given to students who have the ability to correspond effectively with the instructor, to ask questions when uncertain about their marking responsibilities, and to reliably check their work for accuracy (marking exams, entering data into spreadsheets).

Skills:  Preference will be given to students who have effective written and oral communications skills and who are able to guide students’ research projects, and are able to use Excel.

  • Assist the instructor in the preparation and performance of the laboratory and field sessions.
  • Invigilate two exams (midterm and final) and two class quizzes.
  • Available to help students with course material for two review sessions prior to each exam.

Qualifications/Skills:

Education and Knowledge Requirements: Preference will be given to students who have obtained an undergraduate degree in Applied Biology, Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, or Genetics and have a thorough understanding of plant physiology, genetics, and molecular biology.

Experience: Preference will be given to students who have the ability to correspond effectively with the Instructor, to ask questions when uncertain about their marking responsibilities, and to reliably check their work for accuracy (marking exams, entering data into spreadsheet). Reliability of the TA is essential.

Skills: Preference will be given to students who are comfortable responding to students’ questions during review sessions and exams.

Good written communication skills and the ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.  Computer experience (word processing and spreadsheets and R statistical program) required.

The current job description is as follows:

WORK PERFORMED

  • Use moderately detailed marking guides to mark class assignments, midterm and final examinations (~ 2 hr/student). Submit the verified marks to the instructor using an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Be available for occasional office hours before the midterm and final exams (~6 hours)
  • Meet with students after midterm exam to review exams, and refer unresolved queries about grading to the instructor (~2 hours).
  • Assist with invigilation of a midterm and a final exam (5 hours).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Education and knowledge requirements:  Preference will be given to graduate students in Human Nutrition who have obtained an undergraduate degree in nutrition or dietetics and have a thorough understanding of energy metabolism and nutrient requirements.  A background in exercise physiology would be an asset.

Urgent important information about the 2015 Winter Session LFS TA Application

Standard

We have had a critical failure with the new online TA application;  we are having some data integrity issues.  We have closed the application, deleting all the applicant information that has been submitted since the application opened in mid-April. We anticipate re-opening the application on Monday May 18 following five days of testing to ensure this doesn’t happen again.  The application will be open until Friday May 29.

Time is running out to apply for TA positions for both Terms 1 and 2 in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS).

We have a new interactive website:  https://ubclfs-gradapp.landfood.ubc.ca/ where you can read job descriptions and select up to 5 courses you would like to TA per term. There are approximately 200 TA positions available. Preference is given to LFS graduate students, but others are welcome to apply.

Don’t forget to choose for both Terms 1 and 2.
