Tech Integration for Secondary Science (EDCP 467 – Junior Science)

Walking away from this afternoon’s session working with Secondary Jr. Science Methods TCs and their instructor Leslie Johnstone, I realized I hadn’t taken a single photo to help capture the engagement in the classroom. Ah, well, the moment will live in my brain at least ;D. Below are some promised links and notes about our session. 

We utilized one of the Scarfe Teaching and Learning Studios (Scarfe 1007) to provide a stations based approach allowing some student movement and choice (and to be sure students know that these ‘student priority’ spaces are available for them to use!). After a brief introduction in Prezi to five themes of technology integration, students had 10 minute opportunities to dip their toes into each theme at facilitated and self-directed stations.

Remember, in a Secondary Science classroom, especially if students are new to cooperative learning, I would advise creating groupings in advance of class. The groupings might be homogeneous or heterogeneous and based on any number of factors including ability or interest  depending on the objectives of the teacher and the needs of the students. Sometimes, randomized groupings can be used and have the added benefit of introducing students to opportunities to interact with many different members of the class. There are many online options. GroupMind, a lovely little App developed by Louai Rahal an Education PHD student & instructor I met a few years ago, is free and open for you to use with no sign up required. For more on groupings, this article by Beatrice A. Ward (1987) is worth a read.

Our themes:

  1. Whole class student response – We discussed the value of incorporating approaches including digital technologies that move beyond ‘teacher asks question’, ‘students raise hands and respond one at a time’. Students had the opportunity to put their ‘teaching hats on’ and explore Padlet or Kahoot. Some might have seen this station as a wee bit off task as students became pretty engaged in playing ‘Halloween’ Kahoot… Still, with a little prompting, students were also considering issues including
    • Student privacy (Kahoot and Padlet do not require students to login or give personal info!)
    • What constitutes an effective question?
    • How might gaming and competition impact student learning and how might it be leveraged or tempered…?
  2.  Video and Simulations in the Science classroom – afford the opportunity for students to try experiments that might be otherwise impossible or, perhaps, just inaccurate if done hands-on. Sims and video can also support varied learners including ELLs in pre-playing or re-playing hands-on experiments.   3. Google Tour Creator – Sharon Hu, Learning Design Strategist, shared the possibilities of creating a 360° VR environment that offers an immersive experience learners can explore on their own. Students found out how to use existing templates (ranging from human anatomy to the solar system) and how a group of learners can customize and annotate the template and use it as a collaborative storytelling tool.
  4. Teachers and students can create their own videos, digital stories and multimedia presentations using a variety of freely available tools including (but not limited to) Viva Video and Sway. *As UBC students, faculty and staff, we have access to some robust proprietary applications including:
    • Camtasia (we’ll look at this one in another workshop!)
    • VideoScribe (the animated hand we tried out today)<
    • UBC Students, staff and faculty can download these and other applications either through ‘Canvas’ (click on Help  and select ‘Software Distribution’) or through UBContheHub.
  5. Augmented Reality – How might this emerging technology increase learning through rich media experiences and ‘hands’-on access to otherwise unaccessible objects or media? Does it go beyond toy?
    1. Theodore Gray’s Elements – interact with the periodic tables on a handheld device (this one is a paid app but very powerful and worth chatting with your school librarian about!)
    2. Science 360 – an app and website that houses a large database of science videos and content
    3. Leslie had fun sharing Curioscope Virtual-i-tee – a very cool AR T-shirt & accompanying App that allows students to peer inside the human body
    4. Merge Cube  this $15 AR spongy cube & accompanying free apps allow students to hold the the beating human heart, lungs, the earth and even the entire solar system in their hands! The ‘hologram’ that appears in your VR headset, ipad or smartphone is interactive to an extent (you can see different sides of an object by turning the cube or with a swipe or tap, adjust the view, see annotations, or even look inside of the object)
    5. StarWalk – allows you to see the night sky ‘in real time’ at any given place or time. Hold it up to view the horizon or sky above you; hold it down to the floor and see through to the southern hemisphere. This app is transformative in that without such an app, students really have a difficult time visualizing the movement of the celestial sphere (and we definitely can’t show them this during the school day!).

Multimedia Presentation and Storytelling

BEd Teacher Candidates (TCs) this year will have opportunities to flex their digital technology muscles by creating presentations for course assignments and by planning ways to engage their own students on practicum in using digital technologies. In particular, elementary TCs in most sections of LLED 350 Classroom Discourses  will create a multi-media presentation in response to their “Literacy Autobiography Assignment”. This assignment affords TCs the opportunity to develop digital and technological literacy while also sharing a literacy the TC has developed or is developing.

In support of this assignment, I worked with Monica Shank, a GTA in the course, to develop an in-class workshop to provide students with opportunities for hands-on exploration and facilitated discussion about the considerations involved in multimedia creation.

It is my hope that TCs see this as not simply an opportunity to learn to develop their own skills as students but will see the potential for incorporating this kind of assignment into their own teaching practices to provide their own students with opportunities to CREATE (rather than simply consuming) as a way to achieve higher order thinking (Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy pictured here)

Last week, I was also invited by Patrick Robertson and Teresa Rowley to work with the Sustainability cohort who are being encouraged to create and share their BEd Inquiry Proposals in unique ways. Students played with ‘StoryBird‘ – a very visual and artistic little browser based app for digital storytelling. Within 10 to 20 minutes, the students were able to effectively utilize the app to begin creating stories and poems. We learned that we can also find and read stories shared in the storybook community. I loved this example called “I’m a Teacher” created by Ms. Bader to share her Philosophy of Education as a teacher candidate or early career teacher.

We also looked at Haiku Deck, a digital presentation tool with built in Creative Commons images that places a limitation on the amount of text one can have on any given slide. Using this app can support students creating a visual presentation and seeing themselves as the ‘storyteller’ (rather than relying on a slide to tell the whole story).

Something I hope I was able to convey through modelling is an approach to introducing ‘new’ digital technologies to students in an experiential and playful way. Rather than ‘teaching’ whole class ‘how to’ use a particular technology (and risk losing many of your students to boredom or going over their heads), I have always provided my students (of ALL ages from K through secondary) opportunities to play with a given app or tool for a period of time prior to there being an expectation of actually using it for a given purpose. I find this helps lessen anxiety and affords students the opportunity to learn from and teach one another.My ‘general’ process for this:

  1. Show the students a very brief example of the technology ‘in action’
  2. Provide time for the students to play with the technology in  pairs or small groups (with the instruction that they may only ask the teacher to help with tech issues – can’t open, won’t boot, etc – for the first 5 to 15 min depending on the complexity of the tech).
  3. Teacher circulates and invites students to share (or ‘satellite’) their knowledge with others.
    • Once students have had exposure to different ways of representing their learning, I strongly recommend providing them with some choice and agency. Providing the choice of medium, from digital to analogue, helps meet the needs of varied learners and supports a Universal Design for Learning approach to planning and teaching.

In my experience, students can and will teach themselves and each other even more complex applications. I followed the above process with a group of grade 1/2 students using Garage Band to learn to create PodCasts. Within about 1/2 hour, all of the students were able to create a file, add loops, add audio and images. After their initial exploration, students storyboarded and created some very informative podcasts about the salmon in our classroom were ready to share with the school!

As a long time elementary teacher, I always try to provide my students with time to ‘play out’ and experiment with any technology – from math manipulative to science equipment to art supplies to digital technologies. Philosophically, I love being able to incorporate the above approach into my co-teaching in the BEd program and hope TCs are reminded to give their own students such opportunities in order to allow them time to co-construct their knowledge and skills! Stop Motion Studios (FR)

What is it

Stop Motion peut être créée de différentes manières. Aujourd’hui, il existe des applications simples pour créer des animations !

Il y a des applications qui sont accessibles en ligne et en version application.  Stop Motion Animator (pour les ChromeBooks) ou l’application gratuite et simple offerte par Parapara de Mozilla.

Stop Motion Studio est une application qui facilite le processus de création d’animations en stop motion avec de l’argile, des découpes, du LEGO, etc. C’est un excellent moyen d’explorer les histoires et le multimédia. Il y a deux versions qui sont offertes : une gratuite et une payante.  Voilà ce que vous pouvez faire avec Stop Motion Studio :

Why is it relevant

Bien que tout éditeur vidéo peut faire ce que Stop Motion Studio fait, cette application restreint les fonctionnalités à ce qui est pertinent dans la création d’animations en stop motion. En outre, il ajuste le nombre d’images pour chaque image afin qu’elle corresponde mieux au stop motion, alors que cela pourrait être un peu plus complexe à configurer dans les éditeurs vidéo. Enfin, les vidéos sont enregistrées en haute définition par défaut, ce qui simplifie le processus.

Cette ressource est idéale dans une classe de langue seconde telle que l’immersion française, le français de base, etc. Elle permet aux élèves de s’engager de façon créative dans l’apprentissage du langage.


How to get started

C’est très facile de travailler avec Stop Motion Studio, il vous suffit de télécharger l’application et d’explorer toutes les fonctions. Il y a des démarches qui peuvent faciliter la création d’une animation :

  • Utilisez quelque chose pour stabiliser (un pied, un trépied, etc) l’appareil photo et corriger l’angle.
  • Utilisez la fonction minuterie pour ne pas avoir à appuyer sur les boutons de l’appareil photo.  Cela, évitera de pousser la caméra hors de place.
  • Jouez un peu avec les différentes fonctions et les réglages.  Par exemple la mise au point automatique et l’exposition automatique pour voir des créations dramatiques différentes entre les images.
  • Obtenez un bon éclairage, les vidéos aiment la lumière et le bon contraste.
  • Storyboard, ou du moins prévoyez à l’avance à quoi chaque scène va ressembler. Cela vous permettra d’économiser du temps d’édition et de rendre l’histoire plus cohérente.

Sway

Microsoft’s response to creating a more interactive presentation tool that allows users to become creators as they embed pictures, videos, and more into a customizable slidedeck. This allows Teachers to create relevant materials for introducing content and also provides students with a “digital storytelling” platform.

Many students (and Teachers!) may have access to a free Microsoft Account in their school district which means it gives them FREE access to Sway. It is also a program that can be manipulated across platforms and operating systems; make live changes from an internet browser, the desktop app, mobile app, or from a tablet. You can also make changes offline which allows individuals to continue working regardless of their internet connection.

Sway also provides a welcoming interface as it allows customization without complication. Add photos, videos, and links while emphasizing text. It also is a great lesson of storyboarding because it lets you view your “deck” and rearrange photos, create new “stacks,” and quickly make changes to the appearance through free theme choices.

    Read our Sway Instructions then print & share it with your students!

  1. You or your students will need a Microsoft Account. From there, you can sign-in and select Sway to get started.
    1. You will also need to choose how students are accessing Sway. The tablet/mobile app will have a simpler layout then the online/desktop versions of Sway.
  2. Create a new project.
    • Option A: Follow the automatic tutorial OR follow THESE PROMPTS
    • Option B: Explore on your own
  3. Get to know the storyline.
    1. Type, Insert, Edit, and Format
  4. Create a title.
  5. Add relevant images and text.
    • use the + icon on a card
  6. Add additional content.
    • On the menu bar, click Insert, select your preferred content source from the menu, and then enter any search keyword or phrase into the Search sources box.
  7. Preview your Sway.
  8. Change the Style.
    • Click Design on the menu bar and then select, Styles
    • You can select Remix for random styles OR Customize
  9. Share your Sway.
    • Click Share
    • Students could share it to a class notebook, your email, embed it, or share it to social media.

You can also add accessibility features to your Sway

  • Click More Options ( . . . ) on the top menu bar, and then click or tap Accessibility view

Storybird

Storytellers can bring life to words as they weave together details that create beautiful imagery in your mind and now there’s a digital tool that can bring those images to life. Storybird is a cloud-based tool that allows students and teachers to select from a variety of high-quality images and artworks to tell a story. Be inspired to create new worlds and stories based on beautiful professional artistry provided through Storybird or find images that resonate with a story that’s been waiting for an illustrator.

Images as story prompts can help inspire ideas and creative expression in learners. This can be accomplished using printed or projected images in the classroom. With Storybird, sudents can select different types of images provided by professional artists that vary by style and theme. They can read thousands of student-created stories or professional stories while also contributing to this literary community. Younger students can create picture books while older students can publish their novels while also engaging in peer editing from other readers. Students could also create stories to share between buddy classes in the school where early readers can read their stories to older buddies while older buddies assist with creating the stories online. Multilingual students will feel empowered by creating bilingual stories to share or co-creating with peers while learning about a topic. Another option provided by Storybird is to publish the book in print for students to take home to their families for an additional cost.

If students are using Storybird to create digital stories, this is a great step to practice storyboarding, scriptwriting, and pairing appropriate imagery for their creations. Storybird is also a great entry-level for creating digital content because it doesn’t require student emails and its platform is without technical challenges thereby leaving more time for the imaginative creation of content.

  1. Create an Educator Account (at one time this was free access, in Sept 2023 the fee structure seems to have changed and the free account access is now quite limited) 
  2. Create a class and end date for that class.
  3. Add students without needing student emails (remember student privacy).
    • Optional: You can link google classroom accounts and parent emails
  4. Assign a project or create a fundraiser using Storybird (optional)
  5. Let students login and create their first book! (download the student invitations with login info)
    • Let them be inspired by artwork OR have them visit the how-to guides for a more scaffolded approach.

Note** Teachers and individual users can be rewarded with “crowns” based on how often they submit stories. These can be redeemed for specific guides and other digital downloads from Storybird. NB: Always carefully consider individual needs and differences, class climate etc before undertaking any kind of reward system in the classroom!

Let this cloud-based video creation service seamlessly pair templates and music to your own choice of photos or videos for an elegant presentation. You can use it as an educator to create video slideshows or allow your students a different approach to presenting.

We want to give choice to students so they have ownership over how they share their knowledge, so this is one option they could choose. Relieve the anxiety of having to create from scratch by using Animoto’s themes, music, and automatic layouts. Animoto also provides music with each theme or you can select other songs that are provided without worrying about licensing. You can also access a stock image library provided by Getty Images to use for free. Use Animoto to scaffold your learners from posterboards or powerpoint, and prepare them for going even deeper with multi-media presenting. If you want to read more about how Animoto can be used in a classroom, read their Education Blog for lesson ideas like building book trailers, presenting research, or sharing historical timelines or recounts.

You could also use Animoto yourself to shake-up your classroom/school newsletters, year-end slideshows, teaching vocabulary, introducing new content or concepts, and even to introduce yourself. Read their FAQ page for additional videos and supports that will help you get started in your own classroom.

  2. Create an Animoto Account.
    • You can apply for a FREE teacher account which includes up to 50 student accounts which are active for one year.
    • The code for this account sometimes goes into your spam folder so check there if you can’t find it.
  3. Choose to make a Memory or Marketing Video for your class.
    • Memory: Simply upload your photos, choose the layout, and add music.
    • Marketing: More controls to let you add voiceover, text, and even videos.
  4. Pick your theme. Preview and then create!
  5. Let it walk you through their easy tutorial. Search for images, music, and organize them into the pre-made themes.
  6. Present & Watch
  7. Assess – self, peer, and the teacher
    • Moira West (2015) created an AnimotoRubric to give you an idea of how to assess student videos.


If using this for students you’ll need to follow a different approach to create student accounts which Animoto details on this page.

  1. Make a Gmail Account – you’ll want one not related to your personal gmail account.
  2. Create alias emails for your students. **just a variation on your master email address**
    • In Animoto, click on sign up.
    • Use your class gmail account + a student alias [division1+fakestudent@gmail.com]
    • Use an alias for their name.
    • Assign a password OR have a class lesson about strong passwords and appropriate username choices.
