Happy new year/term LFS TAs!

For those of you who haven’t heard, the LFS TA Training Program is offering a NEW Advance TA Skills Certificate of Completion to award your continued education in the field of teaching!

In order to receive an Advanced TA Skills Certificate of Completion, you must:

1. Be a (graduate/undergraduate) student in LFS.

   2. Complete at least 5 professional development trainings (workshops, etc.) offered by the LFS TA Training Program or CTLT.

• Trainings from other UBC Entities are accepted only with prior approval.
• Non-UBC trainings are not accepted.

3. The five trainings must fall under the following categories:

• Teaching Fundamentals (3 trainings)
• Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (1 training)
• Teaching Theory and Pedagogy (1 training)

4. Three out of the five trainings must be completed within the LFS TA Training Program.

• One of which must have occurred after the approval of the Certificate Program (i.e., later than September 1st, 2023).
• For example, if you came to the Fall 2023 LFS TA Orientation, you would have completed the Equitable Marking (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) and Leading Discussions (Teaching Fundamentals) workshops that meet this criteria.

Applications for the Certificate will be open at the end of each term (November and April) For more information about applying, see the LFS TA Portal.

 

Speaking  of trainings… UBC CTLT is offering their Winter TA Institute next week! Here’s some examples of how these sessions can count toward your Certificate:

Teaching Fundamentals (3 trainings required)

Lecturing and Presentation Skills (Wednesday, Jan 17, 12:30-2:30 In-person)

Leading Discussions: Tutorials, Labs, & Lectures (Thursday, Jan 18, 3:00-5:00 In-person)

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (1 training required)

Social Class in our Classes: How can I Support Students as a TA (Monday, Jan 15, 10-12 – In person)

Accessibility-centred Design: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments (Tuesday, Jan 16, 10-12 online)

Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion in TAing at UBC: A Workshop (Friday, Jan 19, 10-12 online)

Teaching Theory and Pedagogy (1 training required)

Using the Experiential Learning Cycle to Create Impactful Learning (Wednesday, Jan 1910-12 – In person)

Short term vacancy for a Graduate Academic Assistant (GAA)

Between now and January 8th, I have an opportunity for an FNH or other LFS Grad Student to work with me on some administrative tasks. I am currently corresponding with potential Community Partners, to work with students registered in course FNH 473, the Applied Public Health Nutrition course. I have made contact with a number of potential partners, and will need to compile the information they share about possible Community Based Experiential Learning (CBEL) projects during the Winter 2023 term (January to April 2024.)

The successful applicant would need to have skills in working with, and corresponding with community partners, as well as skills with spreadsheets, Qualtrics  software, and timely completion of tasks. They would be corresponding with representatives from established community partners to compile all of the information from each partner, about the CBEL being offered to FNH 473 Students.

There would be a maximum of 60 hours available, paid at $33.76 per hour. Interested applicants can submit their CV and a cover letter outlining how they can meet the recruitment criteria to gerryk@mail.ubc.ca .

In order to receive the certificate, you must:

1. Be a part of the LFS Faculty

2. Attend 5 independent advanced TA skills training opportunities. Note that 3/5 workshops must be hosted by the LFS TA Training program. The 5 workshops must consist of the following content:

• 3 workshops related to content in teaching fundamentals.
• 1 workshop related to content in equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI).
• 1 workshop related to teaching pedagogy.

Course overview:

This course will introduce students to animal behavior, application of principles and research methods of animal behavior, practical problems in the care of farm, companion, wild, and research animals; and in animal training and human-wildlife conflict.

Work Performed:

Use detailed marking guides to mark class assignments, projects and final presentations. Submit the verified marks to the instructor. Be available for occasional office hours at particular times prior to assignments/projects being due and be able to correspond by email when needed. Meet with students after assignments have been returned to refer unresolved queries about grading to the instructor. Assist with posting lectures and assignments to canvas and other communications. Attend some of the lectures to assist instructor with activities during the lecture.

Minimum qualifications and skills

Education and knowledge requirements: Preference may be given to graduate students in Applied Animal Biology and/or candidates with good understanding of animal behavior and/or research methodology. Certificates in any continued education in counselling methods/skills will be considered as an asset.

Skills: Ability to correspond effectively with the instructor and to ask questions when uncertain about grading responsibilities. Very good organizational skills. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail (marking assignments, entering data into spreadsheets). Ability to communicate effectively with the students with their questions. Ability to navigate Canvas and Zoom very well to assist with tasks associated.
