Buddhism and East Asian Cultures:

An Intensive Program of Lectures Series, Conference/Forum, and Fieldwork

August 3-13, 2015, Shanghai, China

The Buddhist Academy of China (BAC), the Buddhist Academy of Shanghai located within Shanghai’s Yufo chansi (BAS), the Research Center for Buddhist Texts and Arts (RCBTA) at Peking University, and the Buddhist Studies Forum at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada cordially invite applications for a 12-day program of lecture series, conference/forum, and fieldwork on Buddhism and East Asian Cultures (August 3-13, 2015) at the Buddhist Academy of Shanghai, China.

 I. VENUE

III. FOUR-PART LECTURE SERIES: The program organizers have invited three international scholars to conduct, all bilingually (English and Chinese), a three-part lecture series related to Buddhism and East Asian Culture, with each part composed of five consecutive 150-minute lectures with a general theme (over five days). These three bilingual speakers and their lecture themes are:

  • Professor Robert Campany(Asian Studies Program at Vanderbilt University, USA): Religious Interactions in Early Medieval China;
  • Professor Jinhua Chen (Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia, Canada): Tied by Blood and dharma: Lineage Factors in the Monastic-Secular Interactions in Medieval China;
  • Professor Stefano Zacchetti (Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford University, United Kingdom): Translations, Commentaries and Bibliographical Records: Shaping and Imagining the Canon in Early Chinese Buddhism

This three-part lecture series will be accompanied by seven lectures delivered by seven individual scholars on Buddhism and East Asian Religions.

 IV. FOUR ADDITIONAL PROJECTS: In addition to this four-part intensive lecture series, this program also sponsors the following four projects:

  • An international conference on East Asian temples and shrines, titled “More Bonds than Boundaries: The Diverse Roles and Functions of East Asian Temples and Shrines,” to be held at the Buddhist Academy of Shanghai, August 3-4, 2015 ( conference information announced at: http://blogs.ubc.ca/dewei/call-for-papers-an-international-conference-on-more-bonds-than-boundaries-the-diverse-roles-and-functions-of-east-asian-temples-and-shrines/).
  • An International Young Scholars Forum on Buddhism and East Asian Religions (August 7-8, 2015 at the Buddhist Academy of Shanghai). Excellent articles may be recommended to academic journals for publication. They include the Fojiao wenxian yanjiu (Studies on Buddhist Texts), Foxue yanjiu (Buddhist Studies), Fojiao shi yanjiu (Historical Studies of Buddhism), Studies in Chinese Religion, edited by Prof. Fang Guangchang, Prof. Shengkai, Prof. Sun Yingggang, and Prof. Jinhua Chen, respectively.
  • Taste of the Dharma: a series of five 1-2 hour sessions providing monastic experiences, including seated meditation, tea-ceremony and other temple rituals.
  • Occasional visits to renowned local historical sites (especially Buddhist and Daoist temples) and museums in the Jiangnan region. Students with relevant research interests may also apply to participate in an additional one-week program (July 27-August 2, 2015) combining an international conference (on the Wutai cult; July 31-August 1) and a 3-day (July 28-30) temple-tour around the Wutai area.  V. APPLICATIONS: Participants are required to take part in all of the activities supported by this program, including the four-part lecture series, the regular conference and the Young Scholar Forum (paper presentations are optional, but attendance is required), field trips, monastic experience session, etc. Graduate students specializing in any Buddhist tradition(s) or East Asian religions, and postdoctoral fellows working on relevant fields, are encouraged to apply. Each application should include (i) an application form (to be provided upon request via the above email), (ii) an updated curriculum vitae, and (iii) a reference letter (to be emailed by the referee directly to the above email address).

 VI. PROGRAM EXPENSES: Successful candidates will be exempted from all tuition fees. Program organizers will also provide free boarding (hotel accommodation and meals) in China during the program period, although participants are expected to cover

  • their own airfare; and
  •  a small amount of costs associated with the field trips.

VII. ENROLMENT LIMIT: 80 participants.

中國佛學院、上海佛學院 (玉佛禪寺內),北京大學佛教典籍與藝術研究中心、加拿大英屬哥倫比亞大學佛學論壇於2015年8月3-13日,假上海佛學院 (玉佛禪寺內)聯合舉辦「佛教與東亞宗教國際研修班」,誠邀海內外青年學子參與!

 I. 地點

2015年8月3-13日

  1. 2015年8月3日: 報到;
  2. 2015年8月3-10日:研修班主要密集型課程;
  3. 2015年8月11-12日:集中參訪;
  4. 2015年8月13日: 賦歸。

III. 四個演講系列:

研修班課程邀請以下三位國際學者(以姓氏羅馬字順序為序),中英文雙語提供三個演講系列(每個系列有一主題,每個主題涵蓋5個各150分鐘的講演,分別在五天進行):

  • Professor Robert Campany 康儒博(Asian Studies Program at Vanderbilt University, USA 美國范德堡大學亞洲學研究系教授): Religious Interactions in Early Medieval China 佛教與諸宗教在早期中古中國的互動;

  • Stefano Zacchetti 左冠明 (Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford University 英國牛津大學東方學研究系教授): Translations, Commentaries and Bibliographical Records: Shaping and Imagining the Canon in Early Chinese Buddhism 翻譯,疏解與經錄:早期佛藏的形塑與想像;

除此三個雙語演講系列外,還將由七位資深學者接力演講,蟬連而成另一關於佛教與東亞文化的演講系列。

除四個密集型的演講系列外,我們還組織以下四項活動:

每位學員應參加本項目所支持的所有活動(包括演講系列、研討會和論壇[可選擇發表或不發表論文,但需列席] 、參訪、以及禪悅體驗等)。歡迎佛教與東亞宗教或相關專業的研究生以及博士後報名參與 。入學申請務必於2015 年4月20日前提交至buddhistseminarandfieldwork@gmail.com。申請需包括(1) 申請表 (可經由上述郵箱索取)、(2) 申請者的個人簡歷、以及(3) 一封推薦信(需由推薦人直接电邮至以上電子郵箱)。

 VI. 課程費用

  • 學費以及研修期間的食宿──免費;
  • 往返學員所在地與研修地點的機票或車票費用以及參訪所需的部分費用──學員自理。

  1. I am a professor at SUNY law school in NY and specialize in Buddhism and Law. Your conference sounds very interesting but it is unclear to me whether it is for students or open to all types of academics. Please let me know. Thank you, Rebecca French

    • Thanks for your interest.This intensive program is mainly designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. However, the regular conference (More Bonds than Boundaries) is open to all scholars. Established scholars (assistant professor and up) may participate in other activities (including the lecture series) supported by this program, although they may need to cover a part of the accommodation costs.
