Hi Teaching Assistants!

Hope the term is going well and that you are all doing well. Just wanted to let you all know that we have an upcoming workshop for LFS Teaching Assistants.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Workshop: Strategies for Emotional & Social Learning

Workshop description: In this session, participants will develop and identify emotional and cognitive skills needed for engaging in emotionally charged situations with students. We will explore a number of key strategies to build confidence and self-esteem in students when offering them feedback.

Instructional Skills Workshop – Preferential Access for LFS Teaching Assistants

As you may know, all graduate students at UBC can attend the very popular Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT).  Usually the workshop has a very long waitlist and is difficult to get into. LFS has secured spots for teaching assistants (each valued at $200) which allows you to bypass the waitlist. We have nine spots remaining.

If you are interested in taking this workshop, please email us at colind@mail.ubc.ca with the following information:

  1. Your name, graduate degree program and courses you are currently or intend to TA/teach.
  2. A brief description of how the ISW contributes to your teaching development (150 words).
  3. Your top three choices for the following dates:

January 19, 20, 26, 2019

January 27, February 2, 3, 2019

February 4, 6, 7, 2019

February 9, 16, 17, 2019

March 2, 9, 10, 2019

—————————————————————————————————————————————

As always, do get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Problem-based Learning (PBL) Workshop for TAs in LFS

Friday, September 7, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, FNH Room 300

A few spots are still available; see below to register. If you have already registered, but are no longer available to participate, please also let us know.

Problem based learning (PBL) is a technique that prompts groups of students to carefully analyse a problem to determine what they need to start solving the problem. It requires a different skillset from ‘normal’ TAing.

Come join us for a morning to find out what PBL is, what makes it unique, and how you can succeed in serving as a TA in a PBL course.

While the workshop is designed to support TAs in PBL, all TAs are welcome to participate to enhance your teaching skill in learner-centered environment.

Important Memo from the TA Union

Standard
Greetings from the TA Union office!

I am writing to let you know about three items for the start of the year:

1.     Orientation Meetings for new TAs and Markers:

We are hosting two orientations for new Teaching Assistants and Markers from all departments. Since we will not have contact information for our new members until October, would you please advertise these meetings to your TAs and Markers? Here are the details:

Wednesday, September 5, 12:15, in the GSS Loft

Thursday, September 13, 5:00, in the GSS Loft

One of the key sources of information at our orientation meetings is our Quick Guide to the Collective Agreement, which is on our web site: Quick Guide to the Collective Agreement

 2.     Allocation of Hours Form

According to Article 12.02 of our Collective Agreement with UBC, an Allocation of Hours Form must be filled out for every TA and Marker. This form (or an equivalent one of your own design) can be used for this purpose. If this link does not work for you, please email me and I will resend it as an attachment.

3.     Dues Deduction Forms

Just a friendly reminder that our office no longer needs to receive the signed dues deduction forms that newly hired TAs fill out. These forms can be kept on file in your department.

Wishing you a great Labour Day weekend and a smooth start to the fall term,

Bridget Donald
