First Israeli Arab woman appointed full professor at Tel Aviv University

Haaretz: First Israeli Arab woman appointed full professor at Tel Aviv University

A 54-year-old education expert at Tel Aviv University has become the first Israeli Arab woman in the country to be appointed a full professor.

“It’s a real breakthrough,” Fadia Nasser-Abu Alhija said of her appointment yesterday. “First of all, I am proud of myself for this personal accomplishment. But I believe I won’t be the last – more and more Arab women are entering the higher education system in a variety of fields.”

As of 2007, there were 33 Arab full professors employed in Israeli research universities – all of them men, according to a master’s thesis written by former Open University of Israel graduate student Iris Zarini.

Los Angeles Times: 11 students arrested after disrupting Israeli ambassador’s speech at UC Irvine

Soon after Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren began his speech Monday night at UC Irvine, the first student rose.

“Michael Oren, propagating murder is not an expression of free speech,” the student in a gray hoodie yelled.

The remainder of his words were drowned out by an uproar of cheering and clapping from students sitting around him before he was led away by university police. It was the first of 10 interruptions throughout the speech, and by the end of the night, 11 UC Irvine and Riverside students were arrested and cited for disturbing a public event.

Zionist Group in Israel Urges Students to Report ‘Subversive’ Professors

The Chronicle: Zionist Group in Israel Urges Students to Report ‘Subversive’ Professors

Left-right tensions are rising on Israeli campuses over the complex legacy of Zionist ideology and the place of Zionism in Israeli society, with a call for students at one university to report on “Thought Police” professors, a campaign that is being likened to “McCarthyite” tactics in the United States.

The tensions pit radical academics, who are being accused of pursuing a political agenda and silencing pro-Zionist views, against Zionist groups, accused of a “witchhunt” against professors who reject the mainstream Israeli narrative.

Norwegian University’s Board Rejects Academic Boycott of Israel

The Chronicle: Norwegian University’s Board Rejects Academic Boycott of Israel

The governing board of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology voted unanimously today to reject a proposed academic boycott of Israel. The proposal, which had drawn significant coverage in Israel, would have made the university the first Western higher-education institution to adopt an academic boycott of the Jewish state, but similar motions have repeatedly been offered at national faculty-union meetings in Britain. In a statement after today’s vote, the Norwegian board said that the university’s mission was “to stimulate the study of the causes of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and how it can be resolved. This means that the university is also dependent on being able to cooperate with Israeli academics, and hear their views on the conflict.”

American Groups Lobby Against Israel Boycott in Norway

Inside Higher Ed: American Groups Lobby Against Israel Boycott in Norway

With a decision expected this week at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology on a proposal to boycott Israeli universities and academics, American groups are stepping up opposition to the boycott. The American Association of University Professors released a statement Friday urging the university to reject the boycott idea. “AAUP’s policy against academic boycotts — detailed in our 2006 statement on the subject — is based on the still more fundamental principle that free discussion among all faculty members worldwide should be encouraged, not inhibited. Certainly those Norwegian faculty members already working on joint projects with Israeli colleagues should not have their academic freedom taken away from them. In the long run, more, not less, dialogue with Israeli faculty members is an important way to promote peace in the region,” the statement says. Also last week, the Anti-Defamation League called on the European Union to disqualify from its exchange programs any university that adopts a boycott policy. Organizers of the boycott movement at the university could not be reached, but they outlined their position online, saying that “Israeli universities and other institutions of higher education have played a key role in the policy of oppression. A substantial proportion of academics are directly involved in the country’s advanced weapon industry; social scientists play a central role in the construction of a nation of occupation; historians and archaeologists are important in the development of the Zionist ideology and renouncement of Palestinian history and identity.” A spokeswoman said that Rector Torbjørn Digernes has drafted a resolution for the board to reject the boycott call. The resolution is available (in Norwegian) here.

Columbia U. Provost Agrees to Meet With Critics of Palestinian Scholar’s Tenuring

The Chronicle: Columbia U. Provost Agrees to Meet With Critics of Palestinian Scholar’s Tenuring

Columbia University’s new provost, Claude M. Steele, has agreed to meet with several Columbia professors critical of the institution’s recent decision to grant tenure to Joseph A. Massad, a Palestinian scholar who has been accused of anti-Israel bias, according to a letter posted online by the Manhattan Institute. In a letter sent to Mr. Steele in July, before he had started his job, 14 professors argued that the university had violated its own procedural rules in granting Mr. Massad tenure after a second review they view as unjustified. In a response sent to the professors this month, Provost Steele said it was important for Columbia’s faculty members to have faith in the integrity of the tenure process.

Israel Bars Some Foreign Academics Who Teach in the West Bank

The Chronicle: Israel Bars Some Foreign Academics Who Teach in the West Bank

Israel has clamped down on the movement of foreign academics teaching at Palestinian universities in the West Bank, barring some from entering the region altogether or stamping “Palestinian Authority only” in the passports of others, preventing them from entering Israel.

An English-language instructor from Ireland who taught for several years at the Arab American University, in Jenin, was refused entry on August 23 when she returned to the West Bank to take up a new

Israeli Academic Criticized for ‘Los Angeles Times’ Op-Ed

Inside Higher Ed: Israeli Academic Criticized for ‘Los Angeles Times’ Op-Ed

An Israeli academic who is prominent in his country’s peace movement is under intense criticism for publishing an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times calling for a boycott of Israel. Neve Gordon, who teaches politics at Ben-Gurion University, writes that Israel has become an apartheid state and that outside pressure is the only way his country will ever allow the creation of a Palestinian state. While many Israelis, particularly in academe, share Gordon’s belief that Israel should not stand in the way of a Palestinian state, there is, not surprisingly, a wide consensus in Israel that boycotts are not appropriate. And in Israel academe, which has been a boycott target for some British and other academics, that opposition to a boycott movement is strong. Haaretz reported that after the article appeared, Israel’s consul-general in Los Angeles wrote to the president of Ben-Gurion, Rivka Carmi, to say he was hearing from donors to the university who were vowing to stop giving. Carmi denounced the essay, as did Israel’s education minister, who called it “repugnant and deplorable,” the newspaper reported. Amid the uproar, Gordon qualified his call for a boycott in a statement to YNet News, saying that he wanted a boycott to be “graded” and “sensitive,” starting with products made by Israeli settlements on the West Bank.

Arab professor says booted from eatery over bartender’s ‘racist’ T-shirt

Haaretz: Arab professor says booted from eatery over bartender’s ‘racist’ T-shirt

An Arab psychology professor at the University of Haifa said Sunday he was booted out of a restaurant over the weekend after complaining that the bartender was wearing a shirt advocating killing Palestinian children.

Restaurant owner Khaled Hajaj, who is also Arab, said he did not kick out Professor Ramzi Suleiman, though he did tell him he didn’t care if Suleiman took his money to a different restaurant.

“It hurts my feelings and the feelings of Arab customers,” said Suleiman. “I’m not willing to accept such shirts. It’s like the reaction of Jews who see people wearing shirts with a cross.”

The bartender at the Haifa restaurant was wearing a shirt with a drawing of a rifle sight and the words, in Hebrew, “Institution for special-ed children.”

The Chronicle News Blog: Blistering Audit Blames Israeli Universities for Hiding Multibillion-Dollar Deficits

Jerusalem — Israel’s universities have been accused of hiding huge budget deficits and of fiscal mismanagement in a scathing report by the country’s state comptroller, who oversees public institutions.

The official, Micha Lindenstrauss, said the country’s publicly financed universities ran up a deficit of 17.9 billion shekels (nearly $4.5-billion) last year but reported a deficit of only 1.59 billion shekels (about $400-million).

On Israel, Shifted Ground

Inside Higher Ed: On Israel, Shifted Ground
March 6, 2009

The ground seems to have shifted, activists on all sides say. What they make of it varies.

A shift toward more visible pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel sentiment has been profound on some campuses, prompted, in part, by the winter war in Gaza. Where some describe a corresponding disintegration of civil discourse or a scapegoating of Israel for a complex set of problems, others celebrate a newfound space in which to be critical of Israel — to mount a challenge to what they see as a dominant discourse, so to speak.
