Direct Entry BFA

Until 2017, BFA programs at UBC Vancouver did not begin until the second or third year; prospective BFA students were admitted to first year as general BA students. The confusing two-part process was not in line with the admissions process of other major universities or of UBC-O, and so it posed a significant recruitment barrier. As well, it reduced the efficacy of our education: as BFA programs only had two dedicated years with their students and curriculum, we could not introduce as many inter-course learning scaffolds as we needed. Working with our undergraduate administrator, Deana Holmes, I co-designed the direct entry admission process for Visual Arts BFA students. The BFA Portfolio requirement, which I co-wrote with consultation with my colleagues in the department, was vital to the strategic identification of potentially strong BFA students.
