Cream of the Crop as Shown by Google

I have faith that the readers of UBC blogs like mine are the cream of the crop of the student population here at this lovely university (slight sarcasm intended). As to how you guys got here, some were via Twitter, Facebook, my email signature, and a plethora of places filled shameless self-promotion; while others found it through search engines like Google. I’m quite happy that I come up first when I search “Phoebe Yu”, but what keywords did other people search to get to this blog? Some had mindnumbing questions, others were just curious. I will try my best to appease such curiosities. Much thanks to Google Analytics for stat tracking.

Bring on the keywords!

480 ubc runs on weekends
No, it doesn’t. You’ll have to take the 98 B-Line and then the 25/41/49/99 bus.

phoebe yu birthday
I’m flattered you’re trying to find someone’s birthday on Google, wait, on Google, seriously?!

chinese girls ubc commerce
Umm… *gulp*. There are a lot of us here… but we’re not sure if we want YOU here…

at ubc we like them yong [sic]
-Disturbed- (this is actually a line from a Sauder Frosh cheer, haha you’ll see)

mean things to do to someone to get them back

  1. Tell them to Google stupid things
  2. Get that featured on a blog

Oh wait, you just did that. Cream of the crop indeed.

You Asked, I Answer

If you had to make 7 things mandatory for each first year at UBC to do, what would they be? – Matt Corker

Excellent, excellent question Matt. Here it is in brief and I will expand this into a blog post one day.

1. Attend the Pep Rally on Imagine Day and cheer your heart out
2. Join a club, council, or association on campus (shameless promotion: International Business Club, for example)
3. Take a interest in the AMS candidates and vote in the AMS election
4. Take advantage of free swimming at the aquatic center
5. Visit the Rose Garden and trek down to Wreck Beach
6. Read the Ubyssey (optional: and comment on UBC Years and all the lovely people on the Blogsquad :D)
7. Visit all of your TAs and Profs during office hours, at least once; bonus points if you discuss non-homework related topics

Seven items are so short! The Ubyssey also published a 90 Things to do Before You Graduate UBC back in September, check it out, doing all of them might not be recommended hehe.

What’s the meaning of life? – Krys

42.

What was the lowest moment of your life, and how did you get out of there? – Lisa

Is this supposed to be one of those deep, thought-provoking, soul-searching questions that uncovers the mask I have been hiding behind, only to unveil behind it a hapless kindred spirit toiling without rewards? Of course not! The lowest moment of my life was probably when I went on a trip to Alberta and we went deep inside this cave that was at least a few hundred meters below sea level. I got out of there by taking a mining cart with the rest of the tourist group.

Where did you encounter the word “loquacious” and what does it mean? – Jason Yang

Easy question Jason, thank goodness! I encountered “loquacious” in my SAT prep days (remember those? haha). It means being excessively verbose or chatty, much like this blog.

What/who inspires you the most in life? – Travis

Of course it’s you, Travis. Other than my hardworking VP Finance, I am inspired by one particular quality: selflessness. To give up wealth or your own emotional well-being to service others is truly admirable. I’m also inspired by people who have overcome significant challenges to come out a new and better person.

How much sleep do you get every night? – Tysune

Usually between 5 and 6.5 hours. 9 hours on weekends. I feel bad now. Eastwood is going to come and tell me what up!

How much actual studying do you do during the school year on a usual day? – Tysune

Haha oh dear. I think about 90 minutes max, and then cramming before a due date.

Thank you for all your lovely questions! I picked and chose seven because that seemed to be the number we’re working with today. I encourage you bloggers out there to all take a narcissistic moment and have people ask your questions!

Pensive

Lately I’ve been caught in a whirlwind of ‘je ne sais pas’. Everything just seems to be happening, happening, happening, and I’m almost losing in touch with myself. I felt LESS busy back when I still had two jobs. *sigh* But the oddest thing is, when I settle down and blog and think about what exciting things happened in the last while, I come up with nothing at all. That is not to say that people or events are dull, but rather I’m going through the motions and the daily grinds mechanically without any thought whatsoever. To quote my dear friend Andrew, “losing the conscious thinking, becoming such a daily routine”.

Well, this blog entry is to just let you know that I’m still alive. I’m hoping that by actually writing things down, I’ll add a little more meaning to my life.

Hmm, speaking of life meanings, I went to the Me Inc AMPLIFY workshop the other day (aha! So exciting things did happen, maybe I just have a horrible memory). Great speakers. Amazing PowerPoint slides (especially the last one). Powerful messages about what to do in life. Sign up for the conference if you haven’t already! Matt Corker, who hosted my Sauder Frosh back in September, was one of the speakers. We’re both bloggers so I had to go over and introduce myself afterwards. We had a nice chat so I’m quite glad I did! Thanks for knowing my name Matt!

ALSO ladies and gentlemen, when it comes to involvement, THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING TIME OF THE YEAR ON CAMPUS. Almost every organization is hiring for the coming year so get out there, update your resumes, and APPLY APPLY APPLY. Rejection are no fun (I’ve had one already), but the experience is worth it.

CAMPUS EVENTS FORECAST #3

International Business Club AGM [Facebook Link]

IB Club

Description in ten words or less: wonderful guest speaker, election of executives, events overview

My two cents: You’re all probably aware of my non-creepy adoration of the International Business Club already. If you’re not coming to show your support for the wonderful folks who brought you State of Gateman Address, World Cities Night, Language Groups and Emerging Economies, or the future execs who will bring you even more goodies, at least come for the food, mingling, and o!m!g! election!

Food: Dinner will be provided.

Other info: Tuesday, March 17th 5:00-6:30, Irving K. Barber 261.

I’m calling it a night. Slept at 5AM yesterday and adrenaline’s all about gone.

Campus Events Forecast #2

First things first dear readers. I have a favour to ask that will take exactly one minute of your time. I’ve joined the UBC Votermedia Blog Awards with this blog under a new name – UBC Years (a continuation of IB Years I guess haha). You can show your love for this blog (you know it =P) by voting for me. The instructions are explained on the site, here’s a simplified version.

  1. Any UBC student can vote, sign in to CWL and enroll for the VoterMedia “course” on Vista
  2. Click Begin Assessment, then pick how $200 should be distributed among the participants (if you really looooove UBC Years, then put 200/0/0/0/0 etc. or 150/10/10/10 etc. It doesn’t have to total $200)
  3. Click submit! Repeat in a week =D

Thank you!

Thank-a-thon [Facebook link]

Description in ten words or less: call sponsors/donors, thank them, make a difference!

My two cents: for one reason or another, volunteer often gets pushed to second (or third) place after high school. After all, why bothere when there are no more graduation requirements and no university supplemental essays to fill?! I think the whole deal with volunteer hours in HS defeats the whole purpose of “volunteering”! Why is it called volunteer if you’re forced to do it? Thank-a-thon is just one of several volunteer outings that CCP is organizing this year. Show that you really care by coming out =D

Food: light refreshment

Other info: November 13th and November 24th, 5:15-8:30 PM, Covenant House at 575 Drake Street, email volunteer.ccp@gmail.com to get on the list

Campus Events Forecast #1

If you walk around Henry Angus or any building on campus for that matter, you’ll most likely be bombarded with a huge load of promotional materials. Something’s always happening. Someone’s always talking. Something’s always selling. The way I see it, most students only really want three things: a picture, a short blurb, and whether not not there will be food. So that’s what I’ll give ya! Here are two events taking place in the next little while that are especially worth mentioning.

World Cities Night [Facebook link]

Description in ten words or less: networking dinner with professionals who work internationally / with global clients

Food: Dinner provided, will be sitting with business people and other students in small group settings

My two cents: “Disappointment” is a NOT a word that’s in the vocabulary of International Business Club, the organization that’s putting on this event. By [blog] press deadline, there have been already 70 registered attendees, not even including the corporate people! I for one have always wondered what “international business” was exactly (all I knew was that the acronym IB used to stand for International Baccalaureate *shudder*), so this is the perfect opportunity to find out. It’s not an intense recruitment session, yet it’s a good eye-opener for first year Sauderites and students in other faculty interested in working/travelling to other parts of the world.

Other info: Oct 29 6-9pm, Koerner Ballroom, $10, dress code is business casual

International Business Conference [Facebook link]

Description in ten words or less: full day conference about global resources, includes speakers & networking session

Food: Breakfast included, three course lunch included, wine and cheese reception for the first 150 ticket buyers

My two cents: In the business world, we usually judge a book by its cover because more often than not, the packaging is a direct reflection of the quality underneath. Not only did IBC do an amazing job with promotional work (psst, fantastic video this way), it also has a well-organized and fully-packed conference day as well as several post/pre-events for the delegates. What better time to get a fresh perspective on resources in our integrated economy?

Other info: Nov 14 8:30am – 5pm (or later for reception), Sheraton Vancouver, $35+, dress code is business casual

You can find me dashing halfway into both events!! If I’m ushering at either of them, do show up because this is probably the only time you’ll find ME serving food to YOU.

In other news, did anyone notice HALLOWEEN SLOWLY CREEPING UP ON US?! Photos coming soon =D
