Question and Answer

How to disable comments when needed

Just in case anyone’s looking, here’s how you disable comments in new weekly artifact posts, so reviews end up the right location:

Edit Post > (read it to make sure it’s yours first)

You have to be able to “see” the settings for “discussion” first before you can change them, so turn this on in your “Screen Options” tab at the top of the screen:

discuss-options

Now that you’ve turned on the options for “discussion,” scroll down and look below your post for the “discussion” box

un-check the “allow comments” field > click the “update” button your post.

your-post

Notice there’s only a “reviews” box at the bottom of this page? (This is where reviews can be recommended)

Question and Answer

Does anyone know how to edit a review?

Hi Everyone,

I don’t normally consider myself technologically deficient, but I can’t for the life of me find the edit button after I’ve posted. The issue stems from an earlier error I made when posting a review of LittleBits. Midway through the review, I accidentally hit the ‘enter’ key, thinking I would start a new paragraph, but instead I submitted my post.

As you can see, I now have two posts, which were just meant to be one. Is there a way I can go back an edit it? It’s not the end of the world if I can’t, but I just wanted to know for future reference.

Thanks in advance,

ReadWithMe

Yes, I would invest in this venture called ReadWithMe. This app is one of the easiest, most customizable assessment platform for monitoring oral reading progress on any web device.

Description: ReadWithMe is a mobile application developed by teachers that makes student reading fluency assessments easier to administer.  New reading assessments are easy to launch and can be customized according to the teachers need. Reports can be shared with other teacher and parents via e-mail. When using with the IPad, student reading can also be recorded which can offer a great opportunity to give feedback to students and moreover teacher can play them later to complete the evaluation.

The ReadWithMe app allows teachers to administer reading assessment of a single student or to monitor entire classroom.  It is a customizable platform that allows teachers to add their own passages. Furthermore this app has a huge library of passages which are grade level appropriate ranked by Lexile score and comes with comprehension questions with every passage. Grade level benchmark are levelled according to the national fluency norms which makes easier to see and support to students who need intervention.

Students love to use this app as it uses a touch technology and gives them a freedom to record their own reading. Many find the process of recording themselves to be intrinsically appealing, and some enjoy comparing “then” and “now” recordings to document their own progress.

Additional Features:

 • This app allows either online or offline use, and can be used with one or two Ipads.
 • Teacher can use this App on any web device using one or two paired devices.
 • Fast and accurate calculations of words per minute read, number of errors
 • Audio recordings of student performance in its offline mode, and video recordings in the online mode.
 • Bundled assessments for quick administration

Affordable:  The cost of this app is$4.99 which allows users free access to the online site, and together they form a powerful tool for assessing young readers.

Google Classroom – Free LMS as Part of Apps for Education

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a new tool coming to Google Apps for Education. Classroom weaves together Google Docs, Drive and Gmail to help teachers create and organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently, and communicate with their classes with ease. And it lets students organize their work, complete and turn it in, and communicate directly with their teachers and peers.

Classroom helps teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly. When teachers create assignments, they can choose to share a single document, or automatically make a copy for each student. They can quickly see who has or hasn’t completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback.

Classroom automatically creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student. Students can easily see what’s due on their Assignments page, so they can stay on top of their work.

Classroom also lets teachers make announcements and pose questions—improving communication inside and outside of class.

Classroom was designed hand-in-hand with teachers to help them save time, keep classes organized, and improve communication with students.

Here are some of the most important benefits:

Easy to set up

Teachers can add students directly or share a code with their class to join. It takes just minutes to set up.

Saves time

The simple, paperless assignment workflow allows teachers to create, review, and grade assignments quickly, all in one place.

Improves organization

Students can see all of their assignments on an assignments page, and all class materials are automatically filed into folders in Google Drive.

Enhances communication

Classroom allows teachers to send announcements and questions instantly. Since students can post to the stream, they can help out their classmates.

Affordable and secure

Like the rest of our Google Apps for Education services, Classroom contains no ads, never uses your content or student data for advertising purposes, and is free for schools.

Teachers and professors can apply for a preview of Classroom. Based on the requests Google receives, a limited number of educators will be invited to try it.

Google is also inviting other ed tech companies to inquire about integrating their tools with Google Classroom. Google is aiming to make sure it works alongside all existing tools that teachers use.

By September, Google Classroom will be available to any school using Google Apps for Education.

Pilot Critique #2: EverNote

Yes, I would invest in this venture, as Evernote seemed to have a fit within the current App market and of direct use to a vast client base.

This venture is a product and service, seeking to serve as a one-stop-shop for storage and catologue of an individual or business’ notes, important information etc. in the form of images, text, and audio and can be accessed from multiple devices.

This pitcher highlights the product’s ability to catalogue your info for easy access and searchability, unlimited storage (at a fee), compatibility with multiple operating systems and cloud-like features to be accessed from all of your devices.

The pitch did not specify how consumers would be sought after, I am just assuming through something like an APP store. This would need to be expanded upon for sure, as accessing your consumer base is crucial to running a viable business. As well, there was not specific details regarding whether a pilot has been conducted, or a consumer poll to test interest.

The pitch as completed by the CEO, who provided significant detail, exuded confidence and product knowledge, and he explained the product -scheme if you will, the two different products (ie. the free product and then the priced product), how they are different and of course the benefit of the priced product.

What attracted me to this pitch was how the CEO was able to relate to my needs, as soon as he described the product, what it did and how it fit into our lives in and amongst all of our other technologies I could see how it is useful, how it provided continuity when we are dealing with such varieties of technology.

Pilot Critique: Mentoring Me

No I would not invest in this venture, as I found the pitch to lack the information required to ensure credibility of the project, as well as the actual workings of the MentoringMe program.

MentoringMe attempts to fill the gap of on-going/continuing learning for teachers, specifically highlighting the need for ed tech training for older generation teachers who have either been slow to adopt of non-adopting of new technologies for learning. This gap would be filled through one-on-one mentoring by experienced teachers for inexperienced teachers via an online platform.

The service being provided is an online hosting site that allows individuals to create profiles, link with other teachers who require training in a specific field and from there, the learning begins (opportunity to foster reciprocal learning transactions).

This service provides training for teachers outside of their current physical district, allowing for diverse experiences (opportunity to explore personal interest or expand their knowledge base even when such learning is not available within their own school district), it provides an asynchronous platform accessible to individual needs, and it has the opportunity to harbor a vast pool of individuals with diverse and complex expertise.

In terms of marketing, there was very limited information in regards to how this product/service is to be marketed and how they intend on reaching this vast pool of experts/teachers/learners. This is problematic because the pool of individuals is required to have this venture be successful. There was also no information regarding cost, such as operational funding requirements, cost to the customer, etc.

There is a real lack of information regarding the credibility of the individuals who are pitching, what kind of knowledge, market research or need has been identified and where was it identified? There is also a lack of information regarding the pilot project, who participated (in terms of their credibility and how it is contributing to their workplace etc), what kind of time period and examples of success.

In looking at this overall pitch, there was a lot of questions that remain unanswered as to the overall validity and function of the services that are the foundation of this venture and therefore I would not support this pitch. I also think that in looking at current platforms that exist, blogs, chat rooms, social and professional networking sites, this service may already exist and be free (ie. MOOC’s).

Would anyone be opposed to me adding a tagcloud to the wordpress menu?

Hello Everyone,

I have had a lot of experience building wordpress sites like this one. Would anyone be opposed to me adding a tag cloud as an additional page. This would allow us to create an easy way for us to review the course content based on tags, since both comments and posts can be tagged. The user can choose where he/she thinks its better to post. However, everyone and the instructors are able to see it in one location. This could also help us build the venture lexicon when posting information that could be useful as resources later on. This also solves the confusion around where to post.

I could easily add the tags as they are in the categories. And people could feel free to add there topics as well ie: social media, 3d printing etc…

Let me know your thoughts,

Shaun

Reviews Clarification

Hi David V & David P.

Can you please clarify if our pitch reviews are supposed to appear on each individual pitch page like the following:

(so that the thumbs up feature can be used to return for the second part of activities?)

There’s a mixture of pitch reviews being done this way, and many being done as separate posts (understandably some new pitch posts contain reviews). Clarification would be extremely helpful, as students who have previously taken ETEC 565M are accustomed to rating right on the item, but others are not).

I can/will happily contribute to fixing these by copying the posts and recreating them as pulses, assigned to the correct author (with your permission if this is the case).

pitch-review

Also it would be helpful for those posting new artifacts for rating, to know that they should turn commenting (not pulse rating) off on the back end before publishing, so users don’t see two input boxes and post to the wrong one.

turn-commenting-off

If this is forgotten, we see two inputs like in the image below:

We should be using the bottom (pulse) input, not the comments input? I’d happily volunteer to fix posts to turn off comments if this gets forgotten.

IScuela – An Innovative Tablet Project

I thought this was a fantastic project started and crowdsourcing their funds on Kickstarter. Here is the little bio regarding the project:

“Affordable high quality education delivered in a systematic & engaging manner, for school going children on tablets.” Iscuela Website

“The first truly engaging and interactive learning platform for school children in K-12 segment. iScuela stands for, an interactive (i) school or a college (Scuela).”

How did iScuela came into being?

iScuela was born to deliver high quality education at affordable price to school going children. We started our journey 3 years ago in India where we found that many smaller towns and rural areas don’t have infrastructure or even teachers to educate the children. We thought of building a product where we felt that if we cant bring the teachers to the students, maybe we can bring education to them using technology. Ever since we have been focusing on building a level playing field for children across the globe.

iScuela North America

After all the experience we have collected, we would now like to build a product using the latest technology for K-12 students.

Education system in North America has its own challenges. We aim to address the following with iScuela:

Unequal Access to Education

Due to the ever rising cost to obtain quality education, we want to build affordable platform that provides high quality education to all.

High School Dropouts

Major reason for the high drop out rate in schools is lack of interest and poor performance at school. iScuela aims to make learning engaging and fun which will aid the child to learn better at their own pace. Hence, improvement at school level.

Low levels of understanding and more rote learning

Children are resorting to rote learning instead of understanding the concepts being taught. Just memorizing content will not stay with the children for long and this will pose significant challenges in their career as their fundamentals would not be clear. iScuela aims to provide an environment which enables the child to understand and relate to the content matter.

My personal review:

What truly is unique about this project is that it got my attention right away (YES, I WOULD INVEST IN THIS VENTURE), from the design perspective and simplicity and stunning visual graphics. No speech required, the product sells itself, by watching the video, I guaranteed you will want to see more of this. The truth is great educational products like these are usually the results of great graphic designers, product engineers, and web programmers. Let’s give it a hand to them! I will definitely purchase the platform, however they need help delivering it to a North American market. If I had money to spare, I would invest guaranteed! (That is another issue regarding being a poor student!)

Empowered Learning Pitch Analysis

NO, I would not invest in this venture.

Based on the short pitch I would not invest in this venture. Here is a short summary of what I found in the pitch, broken down into categories discussed in this week’s course content and readings:

Empowering Learning

The pitch provides a pain point that does truly exist, providing students with adequate support, decreasing teacher workloads and improving parent communication but the solution is not unique enough. For example, I am currently using the LMS Desire2Learn and most of the issues he exposes in his pitch I can address very simply within the LMS. My math courses have built in self-assessments that are automatically marked and help fine tune students skills. The results of the assessments and progress in the course can easily be viewed by parents when they are set up with an auditor account.

Finance For Life Pitch Analysis

NO, I would not invest in this venture.

Based on the short pitch I would not invest in this venture. Here is a short summary of what I found in the pitch, broken down into categories discussed in this week’s course content and readings:

Finance for life

As you can see a number of key areas were not addressed in the pitch. Furthermore, it is unclear if the perceived pain point is shared among others or if it is a pain point perceived solely by the product developer. The pitch would be stronger if he addressed ideas such as increased student motivation and performance rather than filling apparent gaps in the curriculum.

I was also confused by his description of the product as a learning management system that covers business, finance and economics. The term learning management system invokes something along the lines of Blackboard, a tool used to deliver and support courses. It is unclear if the product is a packaged course or something else.

Question and Answer

Okay to post a pitch that’s gotten mixed reviews?

Hi David V. and David P.,

I’m wondering if its okay to post in the “pitch pool” this week, a televised pitch, something that has gotten a mixed VC pitch review? I tried to find a clip of a video that I could shorten to chop off the pitch review portion but can’t find it in a format that I’m able to shorten/crop. On the other hand, it received quite mixed VC reviews which were not entirely based on educational merit, and thought it might prompt interesting analysis?

Please let me know if the video is appropriate given that I can’t chop the reviews at the end. The video is located here:

Thanks David and David for including RSS feed links in the sidebar as well as “Radio 522” for keeping track of recent comments!

This is an asset to stay on top of site activity. I’m wondering if it might be useful to have a brief mention on the Radio 522 page (or elsewhere) informing students how RSS feeds can be used/saved/subscribed to? I had a previous class (565A) which required the use of a feed reader, and I noticed that most classmates had never used one, or didn’t know that they could find/install a feed manager.  Might be useful to list some  browser add-ons/extensions or even apps for this?

Took me a while to realize that I could access and subscribe to the class comments feed by clicking on the feed icon in the sidebar:

I was then able to either bookmark the comments feed using my favorite feed reader for Firefox:

Now I can get new comment notifications so I don’t miss anything, which is awesome!

Silicon Valley – HBO

HBO

In keeping with the spirit of the course there’s a new show on HBO called Silicon Valley. A bit rude (as only HBO can be) but very funny. The show is all about a tech start-up who seem to pivot a lot.  The scene in this week’s episode where various companies pitch their product is pretty funny.

Anyway here’s the episode guide and PiedPiper the guys website. Who knows you might find something there for your pitch 🙂

MindShare Learning works with educators, school districts, universities and businesses (K-20) across Canada and as such the team there has a good handle on what is happening across Canada in regard to technology, innovation and education. The list basically repeats what the other lists talk about but it does include some specific Canadian content which makes it a quick, useful read.

The third are the monthly Top Ten reports. These reports include infographics, podcasts with thought leaders, educators and entrepreneurs, industry and ministry news. Again, the value is much of this curated list has a Canadian focus which is refreshing in the EdTech space.

Website Design Suggestions

I had a couple thoughts/questions/suggestions on the website design

There seems to be lots of layers in this website. Is it possible when links are posted that “open in new window” is selected. I know I can right mouse and choose that option but as a visual person I’m better when I have multiple tabs open – across my two screens 🙂 that having to move back to my original screen.

Also, is it possible to get additional features added to comments. Right now I can only leave text-based comments. I’d love to be able to edit the text, use colour, shape and style to keep the reader engaged 🙂 and add links, images, videos.
Thanks

1. I am wondering whether or not we are suppose to post the Opportunity Horizon as a post or as a comment.

NMC Horizon Report 2014 K-12 Edition Review

The New Media Consortium Report (Preview) is a short overview of projections inside the Educational Technology space. I will comment on it based on three basic questions What?, So What?, Now What?.

What

It is split into 3 topics that provide examples that progress in time or complexity:
 1. Key Trends accelerating Ed Tech adoption (0-2 years, 3-5 years, and 5+ years)
 2. Significant Challenges Impeding Ed Tech Adoption (Solvable challenges, difficult challenges, wicked challenges)
 3. Important Developments in Technology for K-12 Education( 0-2 years, 3-5 years, and 5+ years.)
So What

I have decided to comment on its value based on two audiences of interest,  “The Entrepreneur” and “The Educator”

The Entrepreneur- This report allows you to get a snapshot of what the market might look like for the next 0-5 years. If you want to start a venture or you are already in a venture, this is a very good place to start to address problems that your service or product could solve and the climate you might find yourself in while you solve them.

The Educator- This report gives you insight into your classroom/school and what the classroom and the demands of those classroom will look like. After reading this, you can have informed ongoing conversations with curriculum developers, teachers, principals, and educational technologists on how to best accommodate the changing space of learning and ensuring that all players are supported in Ed Tech adoption.
Now What
I think that this report would be worthwhile resource to have and refer to because of its brevity and ease of reading. I would definitely consider subscribing to this publication would suggest this reading to others interested in Ed Tech. I understand that this is currently a preview, but if it is going to be longer, I would suggest that there is an additional info graphic that displays the information as it is currently. Short and too the point.

Emerging Mobile Technologies drive learning and overall growth

Mobile-tech-landing-eng

Wireless and emerging mobile technologies are one of the most dynamic and fast-growing industries on the planet, and as a result they help us communicate, entertain, do business and banking, educate ourselves, and a whole host of other things on the move. Mobile technologies are rapidly making ways into Canadians’ lives and simplifying our mode of communications, thereby enhancing productivity in the overall economy. The widespread usage of mobile technologies in Canadian society, resulted in 26 million Canadians – out of a total of 35 million – own a mobile phone today. The stats on smartphone penetration and data growth, and the rapid spread of mobile broadband networks, are gradually bringing the promise of the Internet of Things. Mobile is omnipresent and rapidly influence nearly every sector in technology: cloud, big data, enterprise software, digital media, advertising, commerce, and payments. Mobile is a complex ecosystem, consisting of unique value chains, technologies, economics, and business models, that needs certain standardization for better and faster applicability in almost all sectors of human learning, entertainment, social and business activity. That is a huge potential for providing various mobile business services and related opportunities, resulting in use for all kinds of formal/informal learning needs, driving unprecedented growth and ICT development in all sectors including digital media, eHealth, wireless technology and financial services, with strong emphasis on developing and empowering pure mobile sectors such as; cloud computing, mobile apps economy, Near Field Communication technology (NFC), Augmented Reality (AR), wearables, etc.

That unprecedented potential of mobile technologies for learning should be furthermore explored and ventured in our learning technologies quest.

Augmented Reality

Although many people have voted already I wanted to include Augmented Reality. This category encompasses Google Glass and also wearable technology. The idea of layering digital information over your visual environment has huge potential in education. Whether used to provide support or enhancement by layering links, video and resources on top of (inside?) posters, papers and books; creating interactive learning spaces inside and outside of the classroom or supporting a variety of student learning needs including those with autism, I think AR has the potential to help expand the walls of the school and definitely make our text heavy environments more accessible to today’s learner

AR differs from Virtual Reality (computer generated simulation that allows the used to interact with the 3-D artificial environment in seemingly real or physical ways) and QR Codes (which provide access to online resources but doesn’t layer over the users environment).

An interesting and exciting twist on AR is augmenting your video reality. TouchCast is an exciting technology that lets the user add  interactive video apps (v’apps) into their videos thus expanding and personalizing the learning experience for the learner.

To learn more hopefully you can see this UBC site a group of colleagues and I created – https://blogs.ubc.ca/augmentedreality/

Hola from Bogotá, Colombia!

Hello Everyone,
My name is Ashley and I am originally from Vancouver, but I have been living/working in Bogotá for the last three years. This is my final  final MET course along with 490 and I am sure it will be a great experience to end with! I teach IB English Literature and work as Technology Integration Coach. Next year I hope to build upon my MET learning and will be working full-time as a High School Technology Integrator in Brussels. MET has really helped me find a career path that works well for me.

A few years back I worked at a software development company and while I enjoyed the technological side of things, I missed teaching.  It is great to be able to combine my interest in technology with my love of teaching and curriculum development. Hopefully this course will allow to explore that in a different light!

I am really looking forward to working with you all in this course and sharing our ideas!

Cheers,
Ashley

My background is in instructional design for corporate training. I’ve designed courses for business skills and compliance training for companies in the financial industry. I’m interested in moving to instructional design for online post-secondary distance learning in my career so I decided to pursue the MET program. This is my second semester in the program. I’m also enrolled in 530.

I’m looking forward to working with you all!

Katherine’s Introduction

Hello! My name is Katherine Burden. Originally from Nova Scotia, I have spent the last 7 years in Whistler BC. This past fall, I moved 25 minutes north to Pemberton, where I purchased my first home. I have been teaching for 5 years and I currently teach math and science at Whistler Secondary School. I teach all grades between 8-12. Along with this course, I am currently taking ETEC 530, and these will be my 2nd and 3rd MET courses. I am interested in this course because I worked for a software development company before I became a teacher and I enjoy learning about new technology. One of the appeals of the program and specifically this course, was that I would be exposed to new ideas and resources for technology in schools, which will help both my own professional development, but my students as well. I like to ride bikes (both mountain and road) and am very involved with rugby at the school I work at but all of that plays second fiddle to my family which includes four children!

Looking forward to learning.

Introduction – All about me

Hi Everyone:

My name is Peter, and I’ve been in the MET program for a few years now.  I’m sort of taking my time, and feel that its better to go slowly, than to rush things.  Just like good slow cooked brisket, it always tastes better.  Also, French toast done really slowly tastes much better 🙂  I suppose you now have had a taste of what I like, food.  Yes, I am foodie, a techie, and a linguist.  I love languages and cultures, and want to perhaps pursue a doctorate in the future focusing on some aspect of culture.  It’s interesting, because I am fascinated with technology, and am love apple technology.  But there is a part of me that is very earthy and romantic, and prefer to do things in the old fashioned manner.  I love antiques, old fashioned things, but really merging the new with the old.  That’s what I intend to do, merge the new technology with the old world romance of European languages and civilizations to create a new learning adventure.

So here is a checklist of what I like and what I am about:

Good food – no fast food, no chain food, no garbage snack food

Technology – Apple technology – simple, powerful, effective

Culture/Language – French, Spanish, Italian (yes I speak all fluently), and hail Britannia, we do have an English culture

Music – I love music!

Thanks!

My name is Shane and I am the technology Learning Leader at the Science Alternative program in the Calgary public board.  I am also teaching grade 8 math and science this year.   This is my 7th MET course and I am looking forward to how this course seems different than all of the others.

While I grew up on Vancouver Island, we have lived in Calgary for 8 years and have 2 young boys.  While we like Calgary, one day it would be great to move back to the coast.  We enjoy visiting every summer to explore the ocean, sail and build sand castles.

I am excited to be working with everyone and sharing thoughts and ideas around technology innovations.

In the Science School, we attend 2 out trips per month, I have chosen to include a picture of one of our sites.

Hello from China!

Hi Everyone,

I’m Aaron, and I’m currently living and teaching in a small, gritty factory town called Shiyan in the suburbs of Shenzhen, China (across the border from HK).  Although I work at a BC school district, I’ve been stationed here since September teaching grade 5 English/ESL in the bilingual department of an enormous Chinese school of over 6,000 students.  Before this, I taught math, science, art, English, SS and planning at a tiny BC offshore high school in Shanghai for 2 years.

I’m enjoying my time in China, and plan on staying for at least a couple more years.  Cost of living is cheap, and opportunities for travel are plentiful with the many Chinese public holidays in addition to our own.

I’m doing my 5th and 6th MET courses this semester.  I’m very interested in exploring learning technologies from a marketplace/ventures perspective.   Although teaching is my passion, I believe I have an entrepreneurial mind as well, and see many opportunities for ventures in emerging technology, here in china, especially in the area of ELL.

Looking forward to workingwith you all!

Aaron

Ahlan from Abu Dhabi :)

Hi my fellow 522ians,

My name is Mehdia Lodhi or Ms. L to my students. I teach in an American school of Abu Dhabi. This is my first year teaching in the UAE.  I am from Toronto, ON. This is my 3rd MET course. I decided to take this MET course so that I can get a better understanding of emerging markets for learning technologies in both public and commercial domains.

On a personal note, 3 men are extremely near and dear to me. My hubby & my 2 awesome boys.

Looking forward to learning together.

Hello from LA

Lethbridge, Alberta that is…

I am so excited to be here! This is my third course, although I took my first through AU, and I am thrilled to be trying something new. I was a Jr./Sr. High School science teacher up until the birth of my second son three years ago. When it came time to go back to work, I needed something different and closer to home (I was commuting over an hour each way). I applied for an Instructional Design job at Lethbridge College, got it and have not looked back once. It has been an amazing opportunity to be creative, learn more and be more available to my children. I don’t get summers off anymore, but we manage. I am a single parent now so don’t have a ton of time for leisure, but really enjoy running, skiing and hiking when I do. I also camp quite a bit with my children. Below is a picture of my boys’ first ever ski day this Winter (I am in the green headband, my sister in the purple pom pom).

hello

Hi everyone!

I am a new teacher currently in my second year of teaching. I work in the Surrey School District in British Columbia, Canada as a Learner Support Team (LST) Teacher. I am currently in my 9th and 10th MET courses. The reason why I chose this course is because I am interested in the area of business. In fact, before I became a teacher I was in the Financial Management program at BCIT, where I took a variety of business courses. I look forward to working with all of you!

Hello from Saskatchewan

Hello all! I am writing from my couch while my husband makes supper, my one year old destroys a magazine, and my cat crawls on me to get me to stop typing. I am a grade four teacher and I just returned from my maternity leave to find myself covering a grade one position. I am not a grade one teacher at all but they seem to enjoy my silly songs and my guitar playing so we might just survive the next 30 days. I have already learned a lot about how students learn to print and spell! Kudos to you grade one teachers out there, it is incredible that students enter grade one not knowing how to print all the letters and leave grade one writing full sentences, wow!

I am the informal tech coordinator at our school, our actual tech coordinator seems to only troubleshoot hardware issues so I try to support teachers using technology to teach. I am often encouraging teachers to just try something, it doesn’t really matter if it works out but it probably will because enough kids are tech-y enough to make it work. My position seems to have been somewhat usurped while I was on Maternity leave but I’m not minding as I am trying my best to make grade one go well.

This picture is of the regional park near my husband’s home. It isn’t very exciting but it is peaceful and that is what I am looking for now that my life has gotten busy again.

Hello from Japan

My name is Nick and I am currently teaching ESL  in Okayama, Japan.  This is my second semester in the MET program.

I am very excited for this unique course because I have spent a lot of time thinking about emerging market trends in the ESL world.  I think that most Educators regard themselves as public servants rather than competitive professionals who have enormous potential in the private sector.  I am glad I had a few opportunities to teach in the private sector and hope to have more.

Near the end of this course, I will be leaving Japan after living here for 2 years.  It has been a fantastic experience but I am ready to go back to Ontario for a little bit before considering another international teaching opportunity.  This course will be a great way for me to focus my energies before moving onto the next step.

I look forward to learning something from everybody.
