Digital Storytelling

Digital Storytelling: a new spin on an old tale. Creating their own stories or telling stories using digital means challenges students to move beyond being the consumer and instead become creators by adding multi-media to their narratives. That same story also becomes accessible to a broader audience by adding videos, graphics, and audio, through web-based platforms or other applications.

We can also recognize that incorporating storytelling in learning environments helps to support the First People’s Principles of Learning and has been shown to support the preservation of cultural knowledge and tradition in some cases.

A digital story is the use of technology to tell a story (Robin, 2015). It is a process of weaving together oral story, images, sound, and music to create a short film (Lambert, 2010). Within the process, traditional aspects of storytelling are integrated with multiple layers. Digital storytelling is increasingly being used for educational purposes (Robin, 2015), leaving legacy (Hausknecht et al., 2019) and as an approach to preserving cultural knowledge (Cunsolo Willox et al., 2013; Iseke & Moore, 2011).

Digital storytelling is not limited to personal narratives and the range of topics varies from historical timelines, personal reflections on local or global events, and even exploring the community and sharing one or many perspectives. Choosing to create a digital story allows the creator to choose and expand their audience and increases accessibility and interactivity for the ‘readers’ or ‘viewers’. A story can go beyond the page as readers engage with the visual and auditory elements that a digital story provides.

Getting started

  1. The first step is recognizing what type of story your students are expected to share. You can follow Samantha Morra’s Process Model or get inspired by her post. Remember, the options for content are virtually limitless. You can expand this topic to include recounting mathematical discoveries, retellings of famous fairytales, or provide explanations of scientific theories. Here are a few slides co-created with a colleague, Sharon, that helps to outline ‘one process’ for this… Once you have an idea of your story and how you want to share it, then you might start thinking about the medium (digital or otherwise)
  2. Choose the tool(s) you want students to use to edit and share their work (or allow students to select a tool with which they are familiar). It is helpful for students to have the opportunity to play with the tool and become more adept and familiar with the program before fusing this with their story. We’ve listed some tools below to help you get started.
  3. Plan! Make sure students have a clear goal they are researching or writing about. This could include scripts, storyboards, comic strips, sequences, or even timeframes. You may also want to scaffold students by having them create a storyboard and then a paperslide video depending on their experience.
  4. Teach about copyright so that your students know where to find and how to cite/attribute appropriate images, sounds, or videos. Access Creative Commons media or record and use your own. For professional images that don’t require attribution visit Unsplash, Pixabay , Pexels. or elementary students might find pics4learning easy to use (with copy/paste attribution). Depending on the device, students can also use Garageband or Audacity to create their own music.
  5. Create the digital story and select the appropriate audience. If it’s going public, remember to get the appropriate permission forms signed that may be district dependent. Be aware of student ages and also where the website or application is based because they will follow different privacy laws.
  6. Provide feedback through peer evaluations, self-evaluations, and even a rubric that students can use throughout the creation process. Visit this link to Kathy Schrock’s Guide to Everything for some sample rubrics and additional resources.

Multimedia Creation: consider the tool for the task

Creating a multimedia presentation for your coursework at UBC is a great way to learn a new digital technology that you might then bring to your practicum class. Rather than relying on an ‘old standard’, consider this as an opportunity to take a risk and/or select a digital technology that might be of interest to your future students! Be sure, as discussed, to think about your objectives before selecting the appropriate digital technology and, remember, technology for creation in the hands of your students is a very powerful thing!

This interactive genially presentation, created by Tamara, Peer Mentor, 2023, models some effective presentation elements while showcasing multiple tools you might use to create your own presentations. Embedded links and examples included!

BEd Teacher Candidates (TCs) will have opportunities to flex their digital technology muscles by creating presentations for course assignments and by planning ways to engage their own students on practicum in using digital (and other) technologies.

For example, elementary and middle years TCs in many sections of LLED 350 Classroom Discourses  may create a multi-media presentation in response to their “Literacy Autobiography Assignment” and LLED 360 secondary TCs will likely be asked to consider multi-literacies and multimedia as part of their summer coursework. These assignments, and others, afford TCs opportunities to develop digital and technological literacy while also considering ways in which multimedia and multimodal teaching and learning tools and approaches might benefit their students.

It is my hope that TCs see this as not simply an opportunity to learn to develop their own skills as students but will see the potential for incorporating this kind of assignment into their own teaching practices to provide their own students with opportunities to CREATE (rather than simply consuming) as a way to achieve higher order thinking (Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy pictured here)

As part of our professional learning, we need to discuss the importance of building digital and media literacy.  Assignments like the one noted above, provide opportunities to do so. Students will likely see a valuable connection between the BC Digital Literacy Framework and the Core Competencies!

Tools Choice

In addition to the genially presentation shared at the top of this post, some tools to support multimedia creation are highlighted in the blog post, Digital Storytelling, by a former peer mentor, Janis. As you begin to plan the story you want to tell, you’ll likely consider the affordances of the technologies available to you and how they will enhance your story…

Knitting Literacy by Shania (a clean, simple video slide show with text overlay introducing us to key vocabulary) provides an example of  a video that can be created with pretty well any video editing software or app (iMovie, MovieMaker, Camtasia, Animoto or others)

The Google Slide Deck below offers a few tool suggestions and considerations for choosing the ‘tool for the task and context’ to help you ‘get started’ creating multimedia stories.


A pedagogical note

When working with your own students, you might consider introducing ‘new’ digital technologies to students in an experiential and playful way. Rather than ‘teaching’ whole class ‘how to’ use a particular technology (and risk losing many of your students to boredom or going over their heads), I have always provided my students (of ALL ages from K through secondary) opportunities to play with a given app or tool for a period of time prior to there being an expectation of actually using it for a given purpose. I find this helps lessen anxiety and affords students the opportunity to learn from and teach one another.My ‘general’ process for this:

  1. Show the students a very brief example of the technology ‘in action’
  2. Provide time for the students to play with the technology in  pairs or small groups (with the instruction that they may only ask the teacher to help with tech issues – can’t open, won’t boot, etc – for the first 5 to 15 min depending on the complexity of the tech).
  3. Teacher circulates and invites students to share (or ‘satellite’) their knowledge with others.
    • Once students have had exposure to different ways of representing their learning, I strongly recommend providing them with some choice and agency. Providing the choice of medium, from digital to analogue, helps meet the needs of varied learners and supports a Universal Design for Learning approach to planning and teaching.

In my experience, students can and will teach themselves and each other even more complex applications. I followed the above process with a group of grade 1/2 students using Garage Band to learn to create PodCasts. Within about 1/2 hour, all of the students were able to create a file, add loops, add audio and images. After their initial exploration, students storyboarded and created some very informative podcasts about the salmon in our classroom were ready to share with the school!

As a long time elementary teacher, I always try to provide my students with time to ‘play out’ and experiment with any technology – from math manipulative to science equipment to art supplies to digital technologies. Philosophically, I love being able to incorporate the above approach into my co-teaching in the BEd program and hope TCs are reminded to give their own students such opportunities in order to allow them time to co-construct their knowledge and skills! With the growing number of English Language Learners (ELL) in Canadian classrooms, it is essential that teachers be equipped with the tools necessary to help them be successful! With the help of free, downloadable, online extensions you can better support the ELL in your classroom. These built-in accessibility extensions can increase learners’ independence and decrease their reliance on external help (i.e. teacher).

Chrome Extensions

The read-write extension can be used with various documents and webpages, enabling valuable features such as: speech, screen masking, word prediction, hover speech, screenshot reader, dictionary, picture dictionary, vocabulary lists, talk & type, and text translator. Here are some ‘I Can Statements’ students can use to self-assess their proficiency using the various Read Write features. A tool that clears clutter (pop-ups, advertisements, etc.) from articles online. When viewing an article full of distractions, simply click the extension and instantly all of that disappears. Can be optimized for printing.

PowerPoint Live

This is an included feature when using the web-based version of Powerpoint 365 (it will not work when using the downloaded, desktop application). When an instructor is providing whole-class instruction, this feature can be enabled to have their words translated at the bottom of the screen (in whatever language they choose); allowing translation in real-time! Teachers can also invite students to join the lesson using a device that enables learners to personalize the translation language (allowing the lesson to be translated in multiple languages simultaneously). Bringing Stories to Life

Allow students to apply their understanding of story elements (characters, setting, problem, etc.) in a way that can better meet their interests and needs. Through the integration of coding with storytelling, using platforms such as MakeCode, Scratch, and Twine, students can program their stories to come to life, using text and their voice to help tell the story!

Why blend coding with storytelling?

Research conducted in the United States has shown that: (if we could find Canadian statistics, that would be more relevant)

  • Only 27% of 8th and 12th-grade students can write at a proficient level.
  • 40% of college applicants (grade 12) could not write at a college level.
  • Female students scored higher on writing than males at most grade levels.

Programming is a new form of literacy. Coding and gaming are part of this tradition of blending more traditional literacy practices (text, reading, and narrative) with new digital literacies (hypertext, coding, interaction).

Studies show various benefits:

  • Increased confidence and motivation to write.
  • Media literacy and creative production are necessary for learners to meaningfully engage in our culture today. Encourages students to become producers, rather than simply consumers of content.
  • Women are severely underrepresented in STEM fields. Using coding/ gaming platforms in the Language Arts classroom is a great way to promote engagement and interest among girls.

Getting Started

  1. The first step is to introduce students to the connection between games and stories through mentor texts and read-aloud. Discuss and bring awareness to students, of the story narratives behind the games they already play and are familiar with. Ask them to share the backstories of the video games they play.
  2. Use story mapping and storylines to help students plan their story to be told through video games. Using a storyline, story map, or graphic organizer can break up the writing into manageable steps and help students organize their ideas visually. The more you use story maps (or storylines) as a class, the more students will effectively use them independently. Practice using these organizers after a class read-aloud, showing and discussing the different parts of a story and how they come together. There are a variety of templates online to choose from: Example 1 & Example 2
  3. Choose the tool and introduce students to the coding/ gaming platform they will be using to create their story. There are a variety of free online platforms to choose from as well as the option to use codable robotics whereby students have the robots moving from ‘setting’ to ‘setting’ as they orally narrate the story.                            Examples include:

Some tips for teachers

  1. Allow students plenty of time to practice using the tool and getting used to the platform before they use it to tell their story. If students have a basic proficiency and familiarity with the platform, they will be more effectively able.
  2. Now comes the time for students to share and celebrate their stories! Have the class try out and play some of their peers’ games and/ or have them demonstrate their game to the class.

Chat GPT: a few thoughts and resources

If you’ve been following the media in the past while related to generative AI (artificial intelligence) including ChatGPT (links to external resource), you may find the following resources of value as you consider the impact on teaching and learning. Many teachers are already incorporating or considering how to incorporate teaching about these technologies in their classrooms as a way to build students’ digital and information literacies. Below are a few resources that may help as you consider how/where this fits in your context.

AI is quickly revolutionizing the way teaching and learning is done in classrooms around the world. From providing personalized instruction to using natural language processing to measure student progress, AI is making it easier than ever before for teachers to quickly assess and respond to the needs of their students.

The potential of AI to improve teaching and learning is tremendous. AI can provide personalized instruction to students based on their individual needs and abilities. AI-based programs can also generate data that can be used to measure student performance, allowing teachers to easily monitor progress and adjust course content accordingly. AI can also provide students with feedback in real-time, allowing them to quickly identify and address potential problems.

AI can also help teachers save time and effort by automating certain tasks, such as grading and tracking attendance. This can free up teachers to focus more on engaging and interacting with their students, allowing for more effective learning.

However, there are also potential challenges associated with AI in the classroom. For example, AI-based programs may not be able to recognize and respond appropriately to nuances in student behavior, leading to inaccurate assessments. Additionally, AI-based systems can be expensive, and may not be accessible to all schools.

Overall, AI has the potential to dramatically improve teaching.

UBC Geering Up AI for Educators:

Reid Patterson (Cognitive Systems graduate and UBC Engineering Geering Up Educator) facilitated an interactive hybrid workshop on Feb. 2023 for UBC Teacher Ed teacher candidates. Below are resources from his session:

The first half of this session is a hands-on exploration of machine learning and AI using freely accessible, open resources online, that can very easily be incorporated into any middle or high school classroom.

What I learned from talking with a Robot:

Dr. Charles Ungerleider, professor emeritus, UBC Faculty of Education, recently shared his thoughts and experiences: “ChatGPT and I have been discussing morality, jokes and what it can do for my field of study, education” with the Tyee. Read the article on the Tyee website.

VSB PodCast:

Jeff Spence, District Principal, Information Technology along with Aaron Tarbuck, Secondary Teacher, both with the Vancouver School District, provide a concise overview and share their thoughts on ChatGPT in K12 contexts in the “Matter of the Month” segment on this “After the Bell” podcast episode (min. 9:25). Highlights for me included how teachers might leverage these technologies to support students in developing their questioning skills and to uncover and support the writing process. Some specific examples provided. One of the key messages here is, “Do not be afraid – learn!”

Citations and Chat GPT:

Microsoft recently launched a beta version of Bing enabled with ‘chat search’ that will, “deliver better search, more complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content.” Apparently, this will also respond to the concern that ChatGPT is ineffective at referencing sources.

Citing ChatGPT itself as a resource in a reference list is also a popular topic of discussion among academics and, I think, is an emerging discussion among K12 educators as well. According to the Guardian, Feb. 27, 2023, the International Baccalaureate® (IB program) recently permitted use of ChatGPT as a source for IB essays. Several post-sec institutions have published guidance documents and it is notable that APA style guide is under revision to reflect this emerging technology/trend. For now, UGuelph has provided citation examples and summarized some of the changes. UBC has posted a guide to academic integrity and ChatGPT.

Classroom Discussions

What are classroom discussions?

Remember: Discussions can occur outdoors!

Classroom discussion can be defined as an oral activity where teachers and students develop together a specific curriculum content or competency through each other ideas. “The purposes of a discussion are to build collective knowledge and capability in relation to specific instructional goals and to allow students to practice listening, speaking, and interpreting, agreeing and disagreeing” (Teaching Works, 2022, May 2). In this sense, students use the ideas, words, explanations, and interaction with their teacher and peers as a resource for their own learning.

Classroom discussions are not merely to help students answer a question but to establish a conversation. This conversation may begin with a provocation, have a beginning, a sequence of processes, and an end or closure. What happens during the process is essential to developing the content and competencies of the curriculum and achieving teaching goals. Differing opinions, moderating interaction, taking turns, etc, are essential to developing student competencies and helping students to deeply explore content. Therefore, classroom discussions are a teaching and learning process that believes that students will accomplish curriculum goals together, through the process of sharing ideas (Teaching Works, 2022, May 2). Well-designed and orchestrated class discussions can help build classroom community.classroom community (links to post in this blog).

Classroom discussions can occur in both synchronous and asynchronous contexts. When planning an asynchronous discussion, teachers should consider the ability of students to self-regulate and manage the discussion. When discussing critical issues, the teacher may need to monitor and help guide the discussion. The Bell Foundation provides some suggestions for how to improve classroom talk that can improve students’ ability to participate in synch and asynch discussions.

Why are classroom discussions important?

Classroom discussions are important because they develop both academic and non-academic skills in students. Communicating is essential to living in the current society and developing a healthy democracy. Being able to share, justify, defend, listen, and understand diverse perspectives and ideas is one of the most important competencies that human beings use in our current world. Hence, students need to learn these skills to be successful in their adult life.

Moreover, classroom discussions support student development during their school years. Through classroom discussions, students can learn to make sense of complex ideas and organize their thoughts. Students can also develop the confidence to present their views and use evidence to justify them. Finally, classroom discussions can support teachers to reveal students’ conceptions and misunderstandings about a topic, helping them to identify contents and concepts that need to be better explained in a lesson.

However, developing rich classroom discussions is a complex task that may generate several problems if teachers do not conduct the process well. Teachers should know how to value different views and pay attention to each child’s needs. Therefore, the challenge (and secret) is to be conscious of all micro details involved in classroom discussions, as we will show next.

What are elements of a rich classroom discussion?

The Teaching Works Team (2022, May 2) from the teacher education program of the University of Michigan defends that teaching practices should be unpacked in chunks or elements to support novice teachers to develop these skills. In this sense, they divide the task of developing classroom discussion into several parts and elements, detailing what teachers should pay attention to in each part. In the next sections, we will details these steps and elements as well as complement them with additional resources and orientations.

Preparing for a discussion

1. Selecting a task:

Teachers should choose tasks, texts, and materials that allow multiple views, discussions, and solutions for a topic/question, encouraging students to explore different possibilities and arguments. Teachers may need to adapt a task to support multiple views and disrupt inequalities.

2. Anticipating student thinking:

Teachers should think about possible questions, mistakes, or understanding that students may have about the topic. This means both activating previous knowledge but also anticipating problems that may deviate students’ attention from the curriculum goals in that classroom discussion.

3. Setting up the task:

Teachers should select the purpose of the activity and prepare the orientations to support students’ work. In this sense, teachers also should plan the moments for students to work independently, in small groups, or with the whole class as well as the resources needed to develop the discussion.

2. Orchestrating the discussion:

Teachers should pay attention to a couple of elements and tasks that will create thinking routines to explore and deepen their understanding of a topic. The following elements may happen in a different order but, according to Harvard’s Project Zero, they should be part of any Thinking Routine (links to Harvard’s Project Zero) chosen by teachers:

    • Eliciting the discussion: teachers should state the multiple ideas that their students are bringing, helping them to see several points and arguments during the discussion.
    • Orienting students’ attention: teachers should ask to students pay attention to specific ideas and contributions of their peers, encouraging them to learn with each other.
    • Encouraging student participation: teachers should encourage all students to expose their ideas and control who ideas have been highlighted or ignored. It helps that classroom discussion not only become richer since diverse ideas will be developed but also supports decreasing inequity among students.
    • Probing new questions: teachers should put new questions that support students to explore and deepen the topic, move to the next learning step process, or summarize what they have discussed.
    • Making contributions: teachers should make contributions or introduce ideas/ concepts that were not brought by students but are essential to achieve the purposes of the discussion. If possible, teachers should connect these new ideas/concepts with what has already been discussed validating students’ contributions and establishing connections with previous knowledge.

3. Concluding the class discussion:

    • Supporting summary: teachers should support students to summarize and remember what has been discussed, helping to establish the most relevant points worked during the class and issues that they will develop in the next classes.
    • Acknowledge student contribution: teachers should highlight, with examples, how students’ ideas were essential to developing both content and competencies during the class.

4. Evaluating (after the discussion)

The final step is to reflect on what has happened in the classroom discussion to evaluate what works (or not) and how to improve future discussions.

Elements to consider as you plan, conduct and reflect

1. Maintaining a focus on the instructional objectives: teachers should always direct each student’s intervention to build some knowledge or example that will help to achieve content and competencies goals.

2. Monitoring students’ work: teachers should pay attention to what students are discussing in their groups and which ideas/ people are been highlighted. In this sense, teachers will be able to use students’ work to develop the content and prevent inequalities or bias in the discussion.

3. Seeing and disrupting patterns that reproduce inequalities: teachers should make interventions to stop patterns that may generate inequalities. These interventions do not need to be explicit. For example, teachers can use the work of a student who may not always be recognized as one of the more advanced or capable students in the class to exemplify a topic, helping to improve student status among his/her peers.

4. Recording the representation of content: teachers might record (on the board to the whole class or just to themself) what students are saying during the whole process because it can support the teaching and learning process. Students might also take notes as the discussion ensues. The notes can be used for formative assessment to help teachers understand students’ struggles and misconceptions, or to help with review to demonstrate student thinking or rationality and understanding of an issue. Teachers might find strategies to make student learning visible (Project Zero). Recording could take the form of a digital whiteboard (link to post in this blog) for all to see or for future reference, sorting & classifying ideas, etc.

Strategies to increase classroom engagement

There are many ways to design and lead a discussion to support more active classroom engagement. Teachers should also consider context including the age, background, needs and preferences of their students.

  • In her blog, teacher Jennifer Gonzales also provides some suggestions. You might also listen to the Cult of Pedagogy #28 Class Discussion Strategies podcast (see embed below).

Classroom discussions about challenging or complex topics need extra teachers’ attention because unexpected reactions may appear and some rules should be established to guarantee respect. The University of Michigan has prepared a specific orientation on how to conduct classroom discussions about challenging or high-stakes topics (UMich). Moreover, Edutopia discusses how classroom norms can support teachers during challenging discussions.

Desmos Graphing Calculator

Most secondary math classes require the use of a Ti-84 graphing calculator.  However, nowadays there are other online options to produce elegant graphing and math simulations. One of the free,  yet still powerful, options is Desmos.

 

  • Desmos is a free online tool that can make the affordances of a graphing calculator more accessible. It is essential to give options to students whose families may not have the resources to pay for other more expensive tools.
  • Desmos is not only a graphing calculator but also a matrix calculator and a geometry tool. Thus, teachers can use it to develop other mathematic content and competencies, such as patterns in a table, proportion, and relationships, linear equations, inequality, etc.
  • Desmos allows you to insert images to be used in theirmath tools, which support teachers when integrating hands-on activities and complex math concepts. For example, the Burnaby School District has a wonderful example of integrating First Peoples Principles of Mathematical Teaching through weaving and Desmos tools.
  • Desmos also offers a section with suggestions for activities and lessons teachers can adapt for their class/teaching needs.

Getting Started with Desmos

  1. Go to the Desmos homepage
  2. You can choose to use Desmos as a teacher or a student
  3. As a teacher, you can browse the activities available or sign up to be able to assign activities to your students through a code.
  4. Desmos has a couple of videos demonstrating how to use their several tools in different math content and competencies. If you want to learn how to use Desmos on a specific topic you can go to these links:
