Linking – Patterns

Within every story, oral or print, hypertext or book, there is an underlying pattern and rhythm. Awareness and detection of those patterns brings clarity to the story.

Bolter stated that ideas and knowledge can “arrange themselves into a kaleidoscope of hierarchical and associative patterns – each pattern meeting the needs of one class of readers on one occasion”. (p. 91) It is up to teachers and learners to derive meaning and understanding within those patterns.By seeing the patterns, learners can avoid them, follow them or find new ones, just one more tool to constructing knowledge. Here is a mindmap of the Patterns of Hypertext.
