Progress Report Memo

MEMORANDUM

To: Dr. Erika Paterson, Professor of English 301

From: Max Foran, Student of English 301

Date: July 8, 2020

Subject: Progress Report

The first step in the Formal Report project has begun and a working outline has been created. The following is a summary of the specifics of the report and a plan to guide the research. Please read through it and offer any feedback that you may have.

Audience:

This report will be generated for three people in particular: the CEO of CIBC, the Chair of the Board, and the Director of CIBC Wood Gundy, a division within CIBC.

These individuals are responsible for the decisions regarding business operations, and whether or not the conclusions of the report are supported will largely depend on their expertise and opinions. Furthermore, any plan of action would have to be approved by each of them. The names and roles of each are:

Honourable John P. Manley, P.C., O.C., Chair of the Board, CIBC

Victor G. Dodig, President and Chief Executive Officer, CIBC

Ed Dodig, Head of Private Wealth Management, CIBC Wood Gundy

Purpose:

The purpose of this report is to discuss the problem of the high costs associated with running and maintaining office spaces. By collecting data about the opinions of those who are in the workforce, both generally and at CIBC Wood Gundy, we can begin to investigate whether or not office spaces are a necessity for productivity.

Significance:

The significance of the study lies in the fact that CIBC Wood Gundy (and other corporations) could lower their bottom line by transitioning their workforce(s) to remote collaboration. Any opportunity to reduce costs should be viewed as a welcome sign to corporations, and therefore provides enough incentive for the report to be commissioned.

Research Plan:

  • Distribute surveys to members of my community as well as to employees at CIBC Wood Gundy
  • Interview employees at CIBC Wood Gundy to gain a sense of their opinions about the feasibility of working remotely
  • Assess the pros and cons of transitioning a workforce to remote collaboration
  • Gain insight into the costs that would be saved by collaborating remotely
  • Assess the relevance of the State of the American Workplace Report (secondary data)

Writing Schedule:

  • Distribute survey and complete interviews (July 15)
  • Analyze data from surveys and interviews, and State of the American Workplace Report (July 24)
  • Draw conclusions and present recommendations to audience (July 30)
