A critical correction to some wrong information in the earlier post on transit options to UBC for Northern Voice.
Thanks to Kathryn for this vital news – “The 44 does not run on weekends!”
To get to UBC on Saturday, your best bet is the 99 along Broadway. If you’re coming from downtown, you can catch the 98 south to Broadway and Granville and get the 99 west from from there. Go to www.translink.bc.ca to check out the route maps.
Again: Don’t plan on the 44 on Saturday!
Apologies to all. I am ritualistically flogging myself as soon as I finish this post.
Brian, thanks for the update, you saved some of us at the hotel from a long lonely wait on Saturday morning.
Note to organizers: while the Hampton Inn is a nice enough place, does it make any sense that the conference hotel is neither near the conference NOR any convenient way to get to the conference? I know a lot of the folks going are from in town already, but for those few of us from away this little detail does matter a bit. I could have stayed lots of places and got the govt rate, but chose here because of the potential shuttle straight to the conference which has since dematerialized as an option. Anyways, enough moaning, the fun hasn’t even started yet, and I am indeed looking forward to a rocking good time (as long as I can find my way there 😉
That’s a fair criticism. The remote nature of UBC’s main campus is an issue… and the relative lack of hotels close-by. The dilemma becomes recommending a place downtown where people can enjoy their off-conference time or a place closer where the streets roll up at 8:00 and with minimal options for dining.
We are sorry the shuttle didn’t happen. I can give you long chain of events that led to that decision when we meet — feel free to give me an earful then. When you do a conference for fifty bucks, you limit yourself in terms of locations (no fancy downtown hotels), food (no full catering) and yes, transport.
I do hope the event works out — there are good things about having the event at UBC, but many challenges. We nearly canceled when it became clear the downtown campus was not available, and perhaps when the weekend is over we’ll wish we had.

A note for visitors to this site… the above plug is not spam, but a note from my wacky and lovely sister-in-law (or whatever it’s called as I’m not married). And though I claim this is an ad-free blog, I’m happy to let this spot for her groovy service stand.
