iPeer Team Evaluation link released on Vista

The link to the iPeer online Team Evaluation form is now available on our course home page on Vista. This is a completely confidential response system, and your feedback about your own and your teammates’ effort and contribution on the assignments will not be shared with anyone.

Your completed team evaluation is due by 9:00 am on Monday, April 8. If you either submit your team evaluation late or do not submit it at all, this will be interpreted to mean that you wish to give yourself a score of zero on your team performance this term.

In assigning scores for and writing comments about yourself and your teammates, please remember that effort and contribution are far more important to team effectiveness than technical skill and ability. In the Additional Comments field, please be as specific and constructive as you can in explaining any of your high or low rating scores and providing additional feedback about your teammates’ work on the team assignments.

I reserve the right to adjust individual grades on team assignments based on the majority of feedback from teammates.

Assignment 3 instructor grading rubric posted on Vista

As promised, I have created a grading rubric for Assignment 3: Marketing Mix Analysis – Video Project and posted it in the Assignments folder on Vista.

This rubric is not integrated into Vista, like the rubrics for Assignments 1 and 2 were, because I need more flexibility in providing you with detailed feedback on Assignment 3. However, you can still see the weightings of the various criteria I will be using to evaluate your videos.

The rubric that you will use in Assignment 4 to evaluate your classmates’ videos will be posted soon.

Marketing opportunities with deadlines in March

Lately we’ve been hearing about a number of ways to get some valuable, hands-on practice of your marketing skills. Remember to check out these two opportunities! Note: both have very close deadlines, so if you’re interested, don’t delay.

  • Brand Management Mentorship Program

Tim Silk, Assistant Professor in the Marketing division, and  3rd-year BCom student, Kelsey, visited our classes on Wednesday to tell us about the Brand Management Mentorship Program for students finishing 2nd or 3rd year. There is an Info Session on Thursday, March 14, 5-6:30 pm in HA 491, for which you can sign up in COOL. The application deadline for this program is Monday, March 25, 2 pm sharp, and application instructions can be found on COOL. Full program info is available at sauder.ubc.ca/bmmp.

  •  Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC)

Dan Gardiner, Senior Instructor in the Marketing division, asked me to remind you that Sauder is seeking two 2nd-year or 3rd-year Marketing students to represent the school at Queen’s University’s ICBC case competition in Kingston, ON, in January 2014. Apply as a team before March 15, 2013, so tryouts can begin. Application forms can be found outside Dan’s office (HA 562), or contact Dan for further details at daniel.gardiner@sauder.ubc.ca.

How to sign up to review your midterm exam

Midterm exam grades were released tonight on Vista. If you decide you would like to review your exam, please email me (at tamar.milne@sauder.ubc.ca) by the end of the week with the subject line:

Sec [your section #] [your first and last names] exam review

(for example, “Sec 202 Jack Johnson exam review”).

I am working on scheduling some exam review sessions for later this week and next week and will reply to your email with the sessions options as soon as I know the dates and times.

Note that during the exam review, we will not argue points on any questions. We can tell you what types of things we were looking for and how you could have improved your answer, but we will not negotiate to add marks at that time. If by the end of your review session you feel that you deserved more marks, you may email me within one week of your review session with a request to regrade your exam. Please take such a request seriously, though, because I will regrade your entire exam, not just the question(s) that you felt should have been graded differently – and as a result, your overall exam grade could stay the same, decrease, or increase. I will accept requests for full exam reviews for up to 7 days after your exam review session, whenever it happens.

Sample Assignment 3 videos

Last term in my Comm 296 class, two teams volunteered to pilot the new Assignment 3: Marketing Mix Analysis – Video Project for me. Their parameters were slightly different from this year’s assignment, but the videos they produced are excellent examples of what can be done to complete this project. Enjoy!

Virtual Office Hours for Assignment 2

Hope you are having a restful and productive Reading Week!

I am holding a brief virtual office hours session for Assignment 2 this Sunday, February 24, from 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Remember that Assignment 2 is due by 8:59 am on Wednesday, February 27.

You can enter my virtual office by clicking on the link on the home page of Vista. If you cannot attend this session, you can check Vista later for a recording of the session.

Keep checking for marketing studies for extra marks

I asked Kirk Kristofferson, the PhD student who visited our class last month to talk about participating in marketing studies for extra marks in COMM 296, about the number of eligible studies available on the Marketing Behavioural Lab website and what might be coming down the pipe for you. This was his reply:

There are 2 studies going on right now that have 200 slots per study. There will also be more going next week, and after reading week until the end of semester, so no need for them to stress. They just have to check often and sign up when they can.

I have posted a link to the Marketing Behavioural Lab sign-up system in the “Tools & Resources” folder on Vista. Check the site regularly to catch studies in which you can participate, because new opportunities are added all the time.

I also recommend that you don’t leave these studies until the last minute, because there’s often a rush for spots at the end of the term, when everyone is desperate for extra marks… It is all done on a first come, first served basis, and when they’re gone, they’re gone.

One final note: remember that you can earn either a bonus mark or money from a study, but not both. The studies that specify that they are for financial compensation cannot be traded for course marks. Make sure you read the study details very carefully before signing up.

Enjoy!

Double-check your iClicker tracking

I have synchronized your iClicker registrations from Vista with the iClicker data collected so far, and you can see the results in your gradebook on Vista. In general, you receive 1 mark per correct multiple choice answer + 1 mark per class for answering 100% of the iClicker questions that day, regardless of whether they were right or wrong answers.

So… if you have:

  1. registered your iClicker on Vista; and
  2. got at least one multiple choice question correct in at least one class so far

…then you should have at least a point or two showing up in Vista.

If you meet these requirements but nothing is there, please take the following steps to try to solve the problem BEFORE you email me:

  1. Double-check that your iClicker has fresh batteries.
  2. Make sure you have registered your iClicker on Vista.
  3. Make sure you know how to set your iClicker fequency to BC for our classroom.

Note: iClicker marks did not start counting toward your participation grade until after the Add/Drop deadline.
