What do you think? How do you view your education — in class and out?

  1. 1. The very first lecture I attended at UBC was Dr. Wehr’s PSYC 100. He used a bar graph to show us the relationship between class attendance and course grades. Positive.

    2. Lots of instructors don’t do this demonstration but mention the importance of attendance and class participation on the syllabus, either take attendance into grades breakdown, or use iClicker questions. The point is, if an instructor doesn’t expect her/his own class to be inspiring than students’ self-learning, s/he probably won’t do any of those mentioned above.

    3. No doubt why distance education is so popular. For some courses, those distant sections are full, with open spots left in regular sections.

    4. So far, I’ve enjoyed all the classes I’ve had. “Rate My Professor” is indeed a good website to turn to if I ever need to explore what other students have to say about this instructor. And among all the comments, what I look for is their lecturing style. The more interactive, the more I’m willing to start the learning adventure with this instructor.

    5. After all, classes should be the focus of any university. I think if there ever exists a problem with classes, we can’t say we need to cancel them, but rather, we’d better enhance in-class learning experience for students. And by doing so, instructors are making their progress too. Teaching and learning, in combination this is what we call excellent education, hopefully.

    Have a good week =)

  2. I couldn’t read all of the text 🙁 Seems interesting though.

Most of my learning actually takes place inside the classroom. I don’t like doing readings–they seem detail-orientated and irrelevant. I like listening to the ideas presented by profs since they usually present the big picture–the thing that I should be walking away with. I like engaging in discussion with the prof–that is how I build on what I already know.

I’m giving a presentation on education tomorrow at LSK 464 at 12:30 pm on some aspects of education and what we’re doing right and wrong. My friend said that you might be interested in checking it out. She said that you may also be interested in this blog project I’m doing–http://bit.ly/gR42mP

Looking forward to reading your blog in the future 🙂

  3. Hi Tyler,
Wish I could make it to your event! Will it be represented online anywhere/how? Looking forward to checking out your blog project when I get a minute… must rush off to class now! Thanks for checking in!
