Course overview

Introduction:  ETEC 565a – is an online seminar for mastering practical skills in selection, use and evaluation of educational technologies and hands-on experience with:

  • web publication
  • design, organization and structuring the content material for an online course or an instruction module;
  • the Learning Management Systems (you can choose from Blackboard Connect, Moodle, WordPress, Edge edX, Eliademy and Quizwork);
  • digital tools for instructional communication and educational assessment;
  • integrating graphic, audio, video and multimedia objects in online instruction;
  • assigning and acknowledging authorship rights, copyright and creative commons licenses.

Syllabus: The course consists of five thematic units with descriptive content, readings, activities and discussions. The material is structured in this way to inform your course project work on creating the digital learning objects using an LMS of your choice and online publishing/presentation tools.

Unit 1: Educational technologies in different organizations  – Weeks 1 and 2

Unit 2: Learning Management Systems and Platforms – Weeks 3, 4, 5 and 6/7*

Unit 3: Designing online activities, instructional communication and assessment – Weeks 8 and 9

Unit 4: Social media and educational institutions – Weeks 10 and 11

Unit 5: Technology dependent environments and education – Weeks 12, 13 and 14

Course projects

  • Designing individual ePortfolio and and publish it online (assignment #0.1, individual work).
  • Writing a critical evaluation of a selected LMS in the context of organization (assignment #1, group work).
  • Designing introductory module of a course prototype, which contains learning objectives and visually presented course structure (assignment #2, group OR individual work).
  • Writing a critical analysis of a course design, structure and the organization of learning activities (a discussion post and peer sharing).
  • Designing an instructional communication unit (a discussion post and peer sharing).
  • Designing a learning assessment unit (a discussion post and peer sharing).
  • Designing one module of a course content integrating the instructional, communication and assessment tools (assignment #3, group OR individual work).
  • Designing a digital presentation a course activity unit and presenting it (a discussion post and peer sharing).
  • Writing reflective summary about the course activities and learning results (assignment #4, individual work).
