Connect is commercial Learning Management System (LMS) on the Blackboard Learn 9.1 platform.

It is widely used in Canadian and US universities, and also widely criticized both by academics (for its rigid interface that encapsulates and isolates users), and by the IT developers’ community, and general public for the company’s unethical legal practices (see Blackboard’s claims on patenting a course management system and a patent infringement lawsuit against rival education software company Desire2Learn Inc). As a result, many companies have reoriented their business models and have incorporated open source standards, for example, see the Open Invention Network  – a shared defensive patent pool, members of which sign the license agreement in support of patent non-aggression, agreeing not to sue each other.
