Unit 3 Discussion

Digital tools for instructional communication and assessment

Fink Dee offers a pragmatic approach to the design of course activities: A self-directed guide to designing courses for significant learning (pp. 13-24). To what extent this approach fits your design preferences?

1. Design one unit of instruction for your course prototype using the tools of your primary LMS or a specialized platform. Formulate the unit’s learning objectives and design the following elements: learning activities, communication activities and assessment activities. (Suggested standalone platforms to integrate with your course site: Edmodo, Piazza, Quizlet, Quizworks-online-quiz-creator).

2. Post URL of your project in the discussion forum. Make sure your project is accessible: provide the URL, guidelines and a visitor login if necessary.

3. Describe what learning objectives underlay each activity. Describe the platform’s functionality – its affordances and limitations – for achieving the unit’s objectives via the designed activities.

Cory Doctorow – in How to Talk to Your Children About Mass Surveillance  – argues that even the youngest online users can be informed users, who understand the issues of online privacy, online control and the state surveillance practices.

4. How do you address the data security and individual privacy issues in your teaching and learning?
