We are still a commuter campus

So a Transit Strike would kick our ass.

Neal Yonson is a native of Ottawa. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an Hon.B.Sc. in 2006 and will be happy to tell you about how things seemed to work more smoothly there. After traveling across the country for free (protip: strategically arrange grad school visits where they reimburse travel) he came to UBC to start a Ph.D. in chemistry. He was quite happy to avoid student issues until he found out how much it cost to go to the BirdCoop. Since then, he has been involved with a variety of advocacy projects.

April Fools! Damn, that was yesterday.

Is it just me, or is this the third potential strike since the last actual strike four years ago, when they went out to support the TA’s?

Was the last strike to support the TA’s???

You sure about that?

Oh, Im thinking of the 2001 10+ week long strike… Which sucked… A lot.

Luckily, I live close enough to bike to class… but not everyone is so lucky (Gerald, I’m looking at you).

It’ll probably be averted, I cant see it going through… Though you never know. Knocking on wood as I type.

Anyone else notice the bus drivers have been far more surly than usual this past week or two? Like, FAR more surly. Usually, I get along with bus drivers rather well…

No – they went out to support the TA’s in 2003. So let’s count… 2001, 2003, and then a strike threat pretty much every year since then? I’m not taking them seriously anymore.

not taking them seriously because they go on strike, or because they threaten to?

When there’s a strike on campus, U Blvd and the bus loop(s) may be blocked, in which case the bus drivers are advised at Blanca not to head in further, because there’d be nowhere to turn around (they’re not allowed to cross picket lines). Such a disruption is our doing, not theirs.

The 2001 strike was extremely unpleasant. These days, we no longer have the parking and students no longer have cars, so we’d be pretty much screwed. I have a sofabed…

Asses, Gina. A transit strike would kick our asses. We’re not just a single person on the UBC campus, you know.
