Campus 2020

The Campus 2020 report was released today. Click here to see the site. Warning – it’s 114 pages long. You’ll recall this is the province’s exercise in “re-thinking” the post-secondary education system and providing a vision for the future.

It’s long. I’d read it but it’s hockey night and I’m packing up and leaving my humble abode. *sniff* If I have time I’ll update tomorrow.

Neal Yonson is a native of Ottawa. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an Hon.B.Sc. in 2006 and will be happy to tell you about how things seemed to work more smoothly there. After traveling across the country for free (protip: strategically arrange grad school visits where they reimburse travel) he came to UBC to start a Ph.D. in chemistry. He was quite happy to avoid student issues until he found out how much it cost to go to the BirdCoop. Since then, he has been involved with a variety of advocacy projects.

“By 2020, the rate of Aboriginal post-secondary participation and attainment will
equal general population rates, and we will have reduced by 50 per cent the
proportion of BC adults not achieving high school equivalency by age 30.”

I thought this was one of the most ambitious goals of the document.

I think it would be interesting to compare the AMS’s Campus 2020 submission with the final report.

I’m very pleased with it. Also, I’m very pleased with myself for reading all 114 pages. But, it sets some ambitious goals, and if the government implements them on their ambitious timetable, it will be a huge boon for PSE in BC.

I’m impressed so far, but I’ve only scanned it and read the first few sections.

Gavin
