Publication Success!

After a lengthy, lengthy revision process my theoretical paper has been accepted for publication at PSPR, which is the top review journal within social/personality psychology. I’m thrilled with this news! The first draft of this paper formed one of my comps requirements in December 2006. Then I adapted it for the intro to my dissertation proposal, then the intro to my dissertation. I first submitted to PSPR in May 2009, just before my dissertation defense last year, revised it in December, and again in May/June 2010. Wow! What a process! I learned so much through those various drafts about writing and thinking and collaborating. Kathleen Vohs, my co-author, was a powerful, amazing force for facilitating that learning. Here’s the citation:

Psyc 208 featured in next UBC Reports!

This morning was my photo shoot for an article being written about my Psyc 208 class. In that class we focus on applying social psychological principles for learning effectively. The article will be featured in the next UBC Reports, due out in early August. Exciting!

Success with TA Training Fund!

Once again, my application to UBC to fund Psychology TA Development has been successful – yay! I apply annually for funding, which comes from the Office of the Provost and VP Academic: http://www.vpacademic.ubc.ca/tatraining/index.htm. Over the past three years, I am grateful to have received $11 625.75 toward the training and development of our Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows in Psychology. Thanks to everyone who participates in these events for demonstrating a committment to teaching. Below is an excerpt from the application outlining the upcoming programming for 2010/2011. I look forward to your participation!

The Psychology Graduate Student Professional Development Series in Teaching and Teaching Assistance will be launched in September 2010. This new title provides an organizing framework for our two existing programs, subsuming both the Teaching Assistant Development Program aimed at an introduction level, and the Professional Development in Teaching Program aimed for more experienced TAs and TFs (details for both are forthcoming).

Connecting Minds

Early bird registration for Connecting Minds, the Undergraduate Research Conference in Psychology, is on until April 16. This engaging conference has been created by Kwantlen Polytechnic University to showcase undergraduate research in Psychology from across the country. It’s a great way to check out emerging research being conducted by undergrads — and it’s at their lovely Richmond campus, so it’s easy for many of us to get there. This year, Albert Bandura is slated as the keynote; should be an interesting address! Check out their website for more info. www.connectingminds.ca

Whether you’re presenting or a fellow spectator, I look forward to seeing you there!

On humility in science and teaching.

I came across this quote and thought its message is an important one. It’s ok to be wrong sometimes, but we need to seek the truth and change our minds when the evidence is there.

Those who never retract their opinions love themselves more than they love the truth. — Joseph Joubert
