As the year progresses, I become increasingly aware that in Rez, there is never a dull moment. At least, you can choose to have it that way.
Over the last several weeks there have been many events, including House Weeks (where your house plans a whole bunch of events for its residents, and you get to decorate the caf with your house colours and mascots and such), and a Name That Tune competition (pretty self-explanatory).
Just this Thursday before Reading Week, Rec’n’Rez put on a competition in Totem Park called Totem’s Best Dance Crew. If you’ve never heard of the show this is obviously based on, it’s a contest to see whose dance group is the best at dancing. Duh. Generally, it’s expected that entering teams are doing a hip-hop style dance, but there’s no rule saying you can’t do something else…
My friends and I, our group that we like to call the Bearded Ladies, decided that we were going to enter, despite the fact that none of us can dance at all. We made, as one of the judges called it, “a musical-slash-grade-six-dance” to a song from Disney’s Hercules. The judges seemed to be a bit confused, but our floormates were there to cheer us on, and more important than all of that, we had fun. So much fun! We made our choreography in less than a week, and it was a blast making it and practicing it, we all got nervous before going on stage, and then we had a blast pulling it off in front of everyone. As a consolation prize for coming in last, we got free smoothies from Booster Juice to boot!
It has definitely been one of the best memories and bonding experiences I’ve had this year. I can honestly say that I would not have the amazing friends I have now if not for staying in residence and all the crazy events they put on all the time.
