Using Xtranormal as an Introductory Tool

I created this video in Xtranormal last summer as a fun way to introduce accounting to my grade 11 students on the first day of the semester.  It provides students with an overview of accounting and is a great way to introduce the short research project that I have them complete on Friar Luca Pacioli, the Father of Accounting.

Telling Stories in many different web 2.0 languages

Ever since I started my MET, I have had the pleasure of experimenting with a wide range of story-telling web 2.0 tools. I was happy to see that this was one of our Rip.Mix.Feed activity options, as I feel I have had the opportunity to use several of the tools available and I wanted to share my favourites here.

One of the first story-telling tools I used that integrates images, audio and text was PhotoPeach. I used it to create a digital story about me for ETEC565:

Going Places by Sheza Naqi

Another story-telling tool worth mentioning here is MyBrainShark.com

I used the site to create a presentation on Open Education Resources for ETEC522 that allowed me to upload my PowerPoint presentation and add audio and a voice-over to it.

Open Education Resources – An Environmental Analysis

Just this week I used XtraNormal for the first time to create an animated video for ETEC512. This has to be one of my favourite story-telling tools now. I especially love the fact that some of the character sets are updated often and that you can record your own voice for the characters. I actually bought an educator subscription for the site after completing my video – I know my students will love it 🙂

And last but not least my favourite find – the Prezi tool. Who knew zooming in and out could be so much fun!? 😉

Here’s the link to a “story” I made at the end of ETEC532 that was a reflection on my learning in the course: My MET Brain, version 5.3.2

Popping Web 2.0 with Popplet

I just wanted to post the work in progress.  So far this popplet is still in its infancy.  Thank you to those that have offered to sign-up.  I am uploading an image of the popplet now as it stands.  As I understand it, based on the Module 4 Index, this is something that we can add on to this week as well.  I will re-post the popplet to show everyone how it has progressed.  Below is just a jpeg of the Popplet so the video does not work.  I have embedded the video below.

Glogster EDU

Glogster is a socially-networked “graphic blog” creator with a drag-and-drop interface for sharing media including text, videos, images, sound, and other data. The resulting interactive infographic hearkens to the posterboard presentation of yore, reloaded into a Web 2.0 interface. I had a lot of fun creating this RipMixFeed Glog – half the fun was sourcing youtube videos which I felt contributed to the topic, and the other half of which was playing around the visual interface and creating the Glog.

WordPress doesn’t allow for this to embed into a blog post, so please visit my Glog here:

Web 2.0 Ideas

I have used Wall Wisher in the past in both the MET program and my teaching. It’s a great interactive and creative tool that I have used with success. I am just starting to work on a new wall with my students so you will see information added to it as the week goes on.

I am also going to post the springpad that I have created about ipads in education. We have had a few ipads introduced to some struggling students at my school and just this week with parent teacher interviews I had a parent ask me how exactly the school plans to use it so I have created the spring pad for my school and will share it here! It is not completed yet but I will keep adding this week if you are interested in checking it out.

Wall Wisher (not yet complete as students are completing it in the next couple days):

Web 2.0 using Prezi

As I set out to show how web 2.0 could be demonstrated using Prezi I discovered there were many already great presentations. I have made a few myself and find it a great tool to “tell a story” no matter … Continue reading

Digital Story and Augmented Photos

I am including a digital story about my family that I created for ETEC565. I used it with my kindergarten students to introduce the concept of family groups. I uploaded my own photos to www.befunky.com and turned them into cartoon pictures. These pictures were then uploaded to Tar Heeler Reader and text was added.

Here is my story.

I also had fun reworking flickr images with Dumpr.
Here are examples of some of the effects:

SpringPad

I’ve found Spring Pad is a very useful aggregator tool.  It easily replaces your bookmark bar and allows you to group your links into different notebooks.  You can personalize those notebooks (colours, titles, etc.) and share them or keep them private.  This tool has become a favourite amongst my family and my colleagues!

Take a look at my ever growing collection of technology resources here.

Let me know what you think about the collection and the tool!

Lino for Bookmarks and Resources

Among all of the new Web 2.0 tools that I have browsed this past week, the one that I wanted to experiment with the most was Lino.  (linoit.com).

I have created a few “canvases” with different purposes. My main canvas is for myself to organize ideas, resources, plans, and to-do lists for the courses that I teach and as well as other things in my life. I also created a Chemistry 7 site that I will continue to build. I plan on adding videos, interactivities, notes, pictures, and so on to this site. I will add this webpage to my Edmodo.com class site and all of my Science 7 students will be able to explore it as we go through the Chemistry unit.

I love this website as it is easy to use and the sticky notes are really fun. I think my middle school students will appreciate having resources clumped on a bulletin board for a change instead of in a blog format that they are used to.

Here is my main site:

Here is my Chemistry 7 site:

(both a work in progress)

Toward a Community of Learners

The following is a digital story outlining the process by which we (almost accidentally) became a professional learning group in my school and rather intentionally fostered a community of learners.
