Women’s Caucus

Congratulations Class of 2022! We are so excited to welcome you to the Peter A. Allard School of Law community!

Our names are Anika and Donna, and we are this year’s Co-Presidents of the Allard Law Women’s Caucus.

What is the Allard Law Women’s Caucus?

The Allard Law Women’s Caucus is a student-run group that is committed to empowering female law students and advancing women’s rights within the legal community. Our mission is three-fold. Firstly, the Women’s Caucus strives to create a sense of community and build a supportive network of feminists within the Peter A. Allard School of Law and beyond. Secondly, we raise awareness of the barriers facing women in the legal profession and address these barriers through empowerment-focused events and workshops. Finally, we engage in activism and support organizations beyond the legal world who are working to promote women’s rights more generally.

What does the Women’s Caucus do?

Throughout the year, we host social and wellness events, fundraisers, and in March, we have our celebratory event: The Women in Law Dinner. The Women in Law Dinner is hosted by the Women’s Caucus and attended by feminist lawyers and law students (with attendance priority for WC members). The evening is dedicated to celebrating women in the legal profession.

Many of these initiatives provide a great opportunity for law students to connect with the community at Allard law and to network with legal professionals.

What does involvement with the Women’s Caucus look like?

Involvement with the Women’s Caucus can be as small or as big of a commitment as you would like it to be, from attending meetings and events to helping with the organization of these activities. Members have the opportunity to apply for leadership roles and head a number of our community initiatives and fundraisers (with the support of the upper year exec of course!).

Regardless of your desired level of time commitment, we encourage everyone to come out to our first meeting to hear more about the various opportunities!

How can I get involved with the Women’s Caucus?

The Women’s Caucus welcomes and encourages membership from all genders and all Allard Law students are welcome to join!

You can sign up at the Women’s Caucus table on Clubs Day in the first couple weeks of class. Our first meeting and welcome brunch will take place in September, and we can’t wait to see you there! We hope that you enjoy the final months of summer and please feel free to contact us at ubclaw.wc@gmail.com if you have any questions (and make sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep updated on all that is happening with the Women’s Caucus).

Sincerely,

Anika Klassen and Donna Chapman-Jones
