Welcome Allard Law Students! Here is a quick introduction to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO). UBC Policy 131 Sexual Assault and Other Sexual Misconduct is the university’s newest policy, enacted in May 2017. The IIO was created shortly afterwards, as part of UBC’s commitment to responding to allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct on campus.
The IIO serves both UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses. The IIO is dedicated to receiving and responding to complaints from students, faculty and staff related to sexual assault, sexual misconduct, discrimination and harassment under Policy 131 and Policy 3 Discrimination. The IIO is committed to a trauma-informed investigation process that is fair, impartial, and respects the rights of all parties.
Our office works closely with other resources on campus such as the Sexual Violence Prevention Office, Sexual Assault Support Centre, the Ombuds office, Campus Security, the Equity and Inclusion office, and others to ensure that any concern brought forward is addressed appropriately. The IIO has several Allard law students contributing to the expertise within the office on various legal considerations throughout the investigative process.
If you have questions about the IIO, our mandate, and process, or would like to arrange a group tour, presentation, and Q&A session, please contact Tarn Khare, IIO Office Manager at 604-827-2060, and we would be more than happy to respond. If you see us conducting outreach or boothing at student facing events out on campus, come say hi! For more information, here is the link to our website: https://investigationsoffice.ubc.ca/
