Hi Heather— Your article sheds a lot of light on the economics of mass communication during an era when information was far from free and plentiful. We tend to think of information as being always in surplus to the point of overload, but of course, it took commercial innovations like the Penny Press to create markets from public attention at a low price for what we know as news. Almost impossible nowadays to think of world without hot-off-the-press (or the Google news aggregator) news, or only as much news as you could afford. I found the analysis on the phenomenon on the “perishability of the news” was great in explaining the rise of other spin off technologies.
