A Message to Share.

"Text"Ahoy! Ahoy!  The term text in my opinion is limitless.  A place where the reader, the writer and the speaker can meet.  A circle of definitions that in fact all lead to the same idea.  I decided to use wordle to convey my thoughts of “What is Text?”.

I believe all text conveys a message.  A message in which we share in numerous ways.  Ones used for decades others relatively new.  Just as in the discussion in the Cambridge forum, we can see new language and ideas appearing, but the age old idea that text is still a message holds true.  The purpose of text is unshakable, the means in which we chose to share seems to change constantly as we evolve, change and grow.

The World of Technology

As I mentioned in my text post, I am interested in etymology and have incorporated the Greek origin of the word technology into my Wordle (much to the delight of my daughter who is majoring in Classical Studies).  My Wordle contains keywords that I compiled from a number of different sources and reflects the diverse nature of the word. As an experiment, I asked several of my colleagues to define the word “technology”. Not surprisingly, each definition was a bit different with the Computer Studies teacher providing the most technical definition.

What Text Means to Me

I am very interested in etymology and have incorporated the origin of the word text from its French and Latin roots. I chose to represent text as a Wordle using keywords obtained from a number of different sources. My description includes different ways to group text, record text and express text.

Writing looks different but it still has meaning

When thinking about the word Text and the definitions we have reviewed a few things kept resonating with me. The idea that a text is something that is created and has substance (texture) meant that texts in the past and today might look different but they still hold the same importance.  Then I stumbled on the video below.  It displays various texts forms and the narrative shares parts of different stories (from that publisher, Hachette) to illustrate that we still receive meaning from the stories regardless if it is on a scroll, a book, or a screen.  Wow!

Technology – A thing of the past

Technology Is Not Technology

taken from dictionary.com

I included 2 pictures here because I think it is important to note that while technology relates to how we use materials and science as a society, if they have always been a part of your life many believe it is not technology because there is no change in the way things are achieved. To me technology is anything that somehow makes a task or situation easier to navigate or complete. This may be done through saving time or energy. However, it doesn’t mean that there can’t be negative effects, it just means that it changes the way that a task may have been accomplished in the past.

Text – A personal understanding

I have created the above image to represent my new understanding of text. I translated the simple word ‘text’ into many different languages including Morse code and braille. I believe text to be the use of symbols to provide communication. These symbols then can use any of our senses to gain understanding of the message trying to be conveyed.

Technology and Me

Photo by Chris Johnson, 2001-11-02, retrieved September 11, 2012 from http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Atari_game_console.jpg

While the Atari game console is not a definition of technology…it does define my first experience and fascination with technology.  I am amazed to see that they are in stores now and are making a resurgence, kind of like record players are also showing up in stores again.

Technology is a term that can have a wide range of meanings.  It can deal with the creation and use of tools to accomplish a task or solve a problem.  It can influence how we behave and interact with others and our environment.  Wikipedia offers a more exhaustive definition for technology.  There it begins the list of technology with the first use of tools by humans, then fire, clothing and so on.

Today we are so enamored with technology that we take it for granted…just wait until your car breaks down, the power goes out, or your water pump stops working.  When these events happen we begin to understand how much we rely on technology.

Anne Beaumaster – Today’s Learner

child with notebook sit blue sky

Hello! My name is Anne Beaumaster and I live in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland. Although I am originally from New Brunswick, my family as lived in Newfoundland for 18 years and consider it our home. I currently teach kindergarten to 29 “little learners”. I am also a mother of 2 boys and a wife to a wonderful husband for 23 years. I am new to the MET program and am looking forward to working with everyone.

I chose this image because it shows how technology has changed the learner of today. Children have been exposed to so many types of technology that they learn differently. A teacher’s role has changed from one where we stand in front of the classroom and provide students with information. Younger children are exposed to such technology as: texting, laptops, tablets, social networking, gaming, etc. We cannot possibly ignite a spark in a student in the 21st century the traditional way. They already have an abundance of information at their fingertips. As educators, we need to provide them with a variety of learning technologies, give direction and ask the important questions in the hope that they ignite their own spark.

Kym Francis – Shark Texts

text shark

raw shark texts

Hello, hello! I am a middle school Language Arts teacher from Edmonton, Alberta who works best under the gun of deadlines and consider myself to be an expert procrastinator. (These superpowers combined with my inability to navigate this blog have led me to be posting a very late introduction.) I am currently in my ninth year of teaching and the halfway point of my MET journey, and I am looking forward to this course!

Outside of teaching and course work, I enjoy travelling, photography, and camping/hiking. I have been fortunate to travel frequently, taking advantage of our summers. After being surrounded by the endless noise of teenagers, I enjoy the peace and quiet in traveling. In a quest for those quiet places, I have recently enjoyed a memorable trip through the Yukon, Alaska, and the Northwest Territories. Awesome.

in the classroom, I have been fortunate to work as a part of the Emerge one-to-one project, which focused on studying the results of placing one to one technology in the hands of students. The three year project began six years ago now, and we placed laptops in the hands of grade seven students for all core classes. Since then, we have expanded our Emerge project, despite the death of the laptops! As the technology aged and became unreliable, we were forced to change our program. I have come to appreciate the demand that technology places on us to be flexible and open minded. Just when we have figured out one way of doing something, everything changes.

Our program has now expanded through all students in grade 7-9 and we encourage students to use personally owned devices instead. I have learned to be very flexible in working with various technologies and student abilities. At the beginning of our laptop project, we really strived to make every single project and learning activity technology-based. Now, I am much more confident my ability to allow responsibility to shift to the student – and encourage the use of technology as one tool to demonstrate understanding of material. Although students appreciate the ability to access technology, often they can feel frustration at being ‘forced’ to used technology to demonstrate understanding. As great as our ever-changing technology is, and as many doors as it may open, we need to not forget the creative power of pencil and paper.

In thinking about this need to define text and technology, and considering the need to be flexible and promote creative thinking in our students, I included this picture of a student creating an assignment to summarize new knowledge of sharks and oceans. After making the connection to my shark photograph, I began thinking about the Raw Shark Texts (by Steven Hall), in which a text-based shark feeds off of typed words. In my mind, the very best examples of literature and texts are the ones that break your brain a bit.

Looking forward to working with you!

Technological Demons

In my previous post, I discussed George Orwell’s “Why I Write” and how Orwell thought that the desire to write was like a demon that we “can neither resist nor understand”. I wonder how much this can relate to technology, too. It seems to me that technology comes from some demon that we cannot resist. We are driven to create technology, and we can understand it to some extent, but as Postman notes, we, especially at the beginning stages, cannot predict what it will do. The technology itself seems to become an unpredictable demon, necessitating more change and the creation of more technology.
