Greetings from Niagara ….this is it

Hi everyone! I was so excited to see familiar names on the introductory blog. I am Catherine Sverko. This is my tenth and final MET course, although I wish we could take every elective, as I have learned so much in each course.

I am currently in my twenty sixth year of teaching. I have specialized in grades five through eight, as well as, special education. I am con currently working on my advanced behaviour analysis certificate which deals specifically with children and adults on the autism spectrum.

I am the mother of two fantastic girls, Katlynn who will graduate from Ryerson University in the spring with a degree in Creative Industries and New Media. LeeAnn is in her third year at Queen’s University in Psychology and Health Studies with an interest in marketing.  My husband Ed left yesterday for a four month stint teaching and researching at the Harbin Institute of Technology in Northern China. That leaves me home with our two labradoodles.

I have an honours degree in Kinesiology as well as my Bachelor of Education Degree. I apologize for no pictures but at the moment I am forced to use my phone/iPad to post this as our internet at home is fritzing out constantly.

I look forward to working with all of you and I am crossing my fingers that my Internet is fixed soon or I may end up living at a starbucks this term.

  1. Hi Catherine,
At least the Labradoodles don’t add to the dishes and laundry. You should be able to get heaps of work done in peace and quiet at home (hopefully, not Starbucks!). Congratulations on making it to your 10th course!!! (#jealous) I am polling the class to find our folks’ favorite elective(s) to date, as I am somewhat of a free-agent for two classes. Any stand outs? 🙂
    Cheers,
    Dana

    1. Hi Dana,
I have enjoyed most of my MET courses, but if we are talking about pure learning I would have to say my most challenging, but also rewarding course was 565A Learning Technologies. It was by far the most intensive course I have taken, the work load is heavy, so I would not recommend you take it while taking another course but so much knowledge is gained and skills for you to use in your classroom every day it is definitely worth it.
In addition to the readings, discussions and group work you also create your own unit on an LMS or hybrid. I did mine in google classroom and really glad I did. I will definitely be using these skills all the time.

  2. Hello Catherine once again! Looks like you will be quite productive this term! Congrats on your final course!

  3. Great to see you in this course, Catherine! And congrats on it being your final one – yay! Did you end up doing the project course (ETEC590)? I was going to take it this semester but decided to bump it to the summer semester so that I can better focus on it. I look forward to engaging discussions with you again this semester :).

    1. HI Allison,
I have to still send you the video I did last term, that you have a couple cameos in. I will try to do that this weekend.
In answer to your question, I did not take 590. It is not required in Ontario so I decided to try and learn more about science and technology rather than do the project course. I had been waiting for this course since I finished my electives.
I really look forward to working and learning with you again.

  4. Wonderful Catherine. It was nice to learn about you and your family. I look forward to hearing more about your work and your endeavours in special education, Samia
