Julie Wagemakers

Julie is involved in strategic planning for the Liu Institute of Global Issues; external relations and development; budgets; and staff oversight. She represents the Institute on campus committees and stewards the Institute’s institutional networks and partnerships.

She joined the Institute in 2002 and together with Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, established the Centre for Human Security and Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Research at the Institute. Prior to joining the Institute, Ms. Wagemakers was the Deputy Executive Director and Program Manager at the Great Lakes Commission, University of Michigan, where she worked on Toxic Air Emissions, Great Lakes-Baltic Sea Partnership on aquatic exotic species, and Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands.

Her interest in global issues began at the International Institute for Sustainable Development where her work spanned business and sustainable development; climate change; corporate social responsibility; and trade and investment. Prior to the Institute, she worked with three Canadian Federal Departments including Fisheries and Oceans where she began her career as the technical editor of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.

Julie has been engaged as an advisor to a number of foundations and organizations including Panos Canada; Environment Canada; Great Lakes Protection Fund; Earth Negotiations Bulletin Editorial Board; U.S. EPA, U. S. Army Corps; Michigan Sea Grant Program, among others.
