Pumpkin Carving!

I love Halloween. Okay, I love all holidays. Except maybe St. Patrick’s Day, I don’t really care about that one.

BUT, MY FRIENDS, if you, like me, love holidays, Rez is the place for you!  There are ALWAYS events going on, especially around holidays.  Today in the house lounge was, yes, you guessed it, PUMPKIN CARVING!

I have been stoked for this all week, and today I got to satisfy my need for Halloween (partially – I’ll be up to more stuff this weekend and on the day itself, so watch for updates). Here is the pumpkin me and my floormate made!

This is why I love Vancouver

The knoll outside the SUB in autumn.

Walking home from buying groceries at the village today, I wandered into this gorgeous scene – the knoll outside the SUB, painted in all the colours of autumn: red, gold, green.  Campus in the sunshine is just about as good as pick-me-ups get.  The air is fresh, and everything is brighter and clearer and all around more cheerful.  It’s so much easier to appreciate the architecture and style everything here is constructed with.  It isn’t fall in Winnipeg, but it’s amazing and beautiful in its own right.

And hey, who says Vancouver is too soggy for crunchy leaves?

I think I have an unhealthy relationship with cookies.

Having a bad day and need to be cheered up?  Having a good day and want to reward yourself for all your hard work? Having an okay that could be even better? Are you cold? Are you stressed? Are you homesick? Are you just enjoying life?

If you answered yes or no to any of the above questions, you could probably use a cookie. Cookies are, in my opinion, one of the greatest parts of life.  They can make a rainy day seem a little bit brighter, and a sunny day even more sunny. Just imagine yourself walking down Main Mall with a Marbelous from Blue Chip in your hand, the chocolate melting in your mouth… Ahh.

It seems to me that I can find just about any excuse to eat a cookie.  I feel like I should be gaining weight, and yet when I was home at Thanksgiving I had lost five pounds since when I left for UBC.  I guess I’m doing something right. I mean, I think I deserved that Marbelous I ate today, I’ve made a lot of progress on the harp, so I deserved it, right? I haven’t had one in like two weeks, that sort of lessens the bad-ness of it, right?  I have yoga tonight, and I live in Totem so that walk every day is pretty a much a commute in itself, so that makes it okay, right?

Ahahaha, I have a problem.

XO – Samantha.

Laundry 101

It feels satisfying to sit in my dorm room on a Sunday afternoon knowing that the dishes are clean, and the laundry is done – properly. I’m sure there are plenty of people who were old pros at the art long before they came to residence, but that said I know I’m not the only who was doing laundry for the first time when I got here. Just for everyone’s future reference, I’ve decided to create a list of laundry tips. Some are passed down from my mother, others I learned the hard way.

Barber Courtyard: The perfect place to enjoy an autumn afternoon.

Fall in Winnipeg is one my absolute favourite things in the world – and one of the things I miss the most about home. The sun shines a little differently, painting everything gold, and the air feels different. The sky goes on forever in an endless see of blue, a few white wispy clouds way up above you; fall in Winnipeg is openness, joy, falling in love; it is indescribable. It’s something you just have to breathe in to understand.

Today is a day that reminds me so much of Winnipeg fall. It’s sunny, dry, cool but not too cool, and reminds me so much of home it puts a smile on my face. So when my prof let my German class out early on a Friday afternoon, I couldn’t resist buying a cup of hot chocolate from Ike’s Cafe and just sit outside and enjoy the weather. This sort of sun is what we get nearly every day in Winnipeg, whereas here in Vancouver it’s more of a rare treat.

The place I wound up in was the courtyard outside Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. It’s the perfect place just to sit, chat with friends, people-watch, or just day dream, while the sun warms your back and the water in the fountain splashes pleasantly. It’s a gorgeous place at UBC, one you may not notice otherwise; it isn’t on any brochure that I’ve see, nor pointed out on any map – and yet it has one of the nicest atmospheres I’ve felt so far. I’m sorry I didn’t get a picture, I left my camera in my room, but that just means you have to go check it out for yourself!

XO – Samantha.

Protip: Never put your keys in your back pocket.

Just a handy little tip for life: Never put your keys on a lanyard in your back pocket with the lanyard hanging out. Sure, it’s an easy to reach place and all, but it’s also a very easy place to forget about, say, when you’re going to the bathroom and sitting down… Let’s just say that I had a very good reason to go to the bookstore today and buy a pretty new purple lanyard. And what the heck, let’s buy a UBC mug, too.

Sometimes these things turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Day of the Longboat

A bustling crowd of people, loud music, excitement you can feel in the air, the ocean, and mountains and high rises on the horizon: this is Day of the Longboat.  It is a must-attend event at UBC, and for good reason.  It’s the most fun I’ve had in a while, and it really brought me and my team-and-floor-mates closer together.  It also brings up my number one way to meet and make friends: get involved.  Continue reading

Reception and Re: Winter Harp

Today was the reception for Major Entrance Scholars (ie. people who won Major Entrance Scholarships), and uh, yeah, I won one… Anyway, there were a lot of amazing people!  I got to meet the chancellor and president of UBC and the director of the school of music (all of whom are really really nice people).  I also met other students, and I think I can really connect with them. I also got the first hug I’ve had since I got here, which is AWESOME because I am a very huggy person.  There was also really good food, so, you know, that’s a plus too… :P

Also in regards to the Winter Harp, it turns out that the harpist they wanted in the first place could make the shows, so I won’t be needed.  Still, I’m really happy – the fact that they contacted me at all is awesome, and I think with the extra rehearsals and stuff I’d get really stressed out.

That’s all for today :)  -Samantha

Winter Harp

I’ve told this story about a million times now, but I’ll try not to be boring while telling it again.

Last week, I got an email from my FAVOURITE group of harp performers, the Winter Harp (seriously, check them out – www.winterharp.com).  The person who sent me the email, the creator of Winter Harp, is friends with my harp teacher (who gave her my name) and said that they are looking for a second harpist for a few shows later this year, and along with a few other people, would like to know if I was interested in playing with them.  Well of course, these people being my favourite people EVER, I immediately said yes and was jumping around in my dorm room practically crying because I was so happy.

On Sunday, I took transit all the way to New Westminster (I am very proud of myself for that), and played for them. I think I did pretty well, but I think I may not get it because there are other people trying for it who have more experience than me, and I’m actually perfectly okay with that.  Getting to do the Winter Harp gigs would be an amazing experience, but it would also be really stressful, and either way I’m just really honoured to be able to meet some of my favourite performers.

Also on the way back I went to Metrotown, and if you’re craving some shopping you should go check it out :P

Later – Samantha
