For that durn Chemistry exam

Hello, world!

I haven’t been posting as often as I had before because of the huge piles of work.  Humongous piles.  I’m drowning, guys. I’ve been studying for the upcoming Chem 121 midterm.  I’m finding the material pretty tough, but I’m determined to pass this exam with an acceptable grade.

Anyways, I’ve been taking lots of breaks (probably more breaks than necessary). Now my procrastinating has become more productive, and even chemistry related! Here are two chemistry videos I’d like to share with you (oi, don’t give me that look). You know you like it!

Attention iOS 6 users!

So this morning my parents showed me something interesting today.  As you might know, I do my drawings on an iPad, which I’ve recently updated to the new operating system.

With this update came a cookie setting that allows companies to track your app and internet usage. In other words, they are getting information about you and your browsing history straight from your tablet (or iPod, or iPhone).  This information is used to tailor the ads that show up in applications and such, catering to what they perceive as your needs.

The sneaky bit? The setting was turned on immediately after the update, and I had no idea. I feel so violated harrumph.

You can find the option to turn it off by going to Settings > General > Advertising.  The option is posed in double negative, so you actually want to turn the option (“Limit Ad Tracking”) on.

There are more iOS 6 secrets? Look here.

This was an FYI brought to you by a grumpy college student.

KIN Lab Crawl

Today I went on a kinesiology lab crawl!

“Wait,” you ask, “what’s that?”

A lab crawl is like the nerdy version of a club crawl, which basically when you bounce from nightclub to nightclub.  Though in this case, you go from lab to lab. When you get to each lab, the lab experts at each place tell you what their research is about.

It was pretty cool to see what type of research actually goes on in the field of kinesiology.  I mean, you don’t expect there to be much, right?  Although a lot of people don’t even know what kinesiology is, let alone have preconceptions of it…

But there’s actually an awesomely wide range of things being studied by kinesiologists! We saw a robot that mimics the way a person shifts their weight, and someone throwing darts whilst blindfolded.  The researchers, most of whom are actually teaching assistants in the School of Kinesiology, explained who they were (more often than not, Masters or Ph.D students) and what they did in their research.

Honestly, the stuff they talked about was way over my head sometimes. I was one of the few first years in attendance, so I guess the event must’ve been more geared towards older students.  But even though I didn’t understand all the content, we had a chance to mingle with the TAs and I got some useful information about getting involved in research, and becoming a Ph.D student! And oh boy, is it a lot of work.

All in all, I think it was a good experience! I’d definitely recommend (what, recommendations again?) doing a lab crawl at least once in your years at UBC.

Unless you’re an arts student, but I’m sure there’s probably an equivalent for it somewhere.

But anyways. If you can, do it!

PS. Bulletin! The director of UBC’s School of Kinesiology, Dr. Sparks, is retiring.  Le gasp.

Ways to procrastinate: Do other homework!

Actually.

I should be studying neurophysiology and muscle physiology right now… but nope! Instead, I’m taking the time to do my dance observations assignment.

Which is also due tomorrow.

No big deal.

And when I want to take a real break, I go onto Skype and talk to my best friend and then I start listening to this:

I will be okay.  I can do this!

Christmas decorations are up? Ridiculous.

I went to Metrotown mall the other day (if you haven’t gone lately, go! I swear half the shops have changed…), and I finally bought a pair of rain boots. No longer am I a failure of a Vancouverite! because all Vancouver residents wear rubber boots.

Anyways, when I was there I noticed that there were Christmas decorations gracing the ceilings and the atriums. Whaaaaaat?!

C’mon, people.  November has just started.  We haven’t even had Remembrance Day yet. Why are we putting up baubles and garland already?  Can’t we just, y’know, hold it in for another week and a half?

Remembrance Day might not be a fun holiday, yes, but it’s an important one.  Not just for war veterans, but especially for us who have never experienced the effects of war.  I think we do the veterans and the men and women who served in war a disservice by not taking time to just respectfully observe their sacrifice.

What think you?
