Born in a small village in Jalandher, Punjab, Sadhu Singh started teaching after completing his MA in Punjabi. He taught in various colleges and universities in Punjab before the rise of religious extremism in Punjab forced him to take political asylum in Canada. In Canada, he continued his passion for reading and writing and translated many books. While initially he was sad to leave behind his village, which he felt offered the epitome of religious and cultural harmony, his secure teaching job and his friends to migrate to Canada, he now feels happy in his old age: the bright future that his children, particularly his daughters, and grandchildren enjoy here in Canada could not have been possible in India. In the interview, he talks about his village, his educational journey, his experience of extremism in Punjab, the sadness of migration, his translation of the novel Malooka, and Punjabi in Canada.
